South America » Peru » Arequipa April 25th 2006

Hey first off thanks for all the comments to the blog. I finally figured out that I need to go in and yay or nay them before they go on the web, so if your wondering why your comments were not there until now you know who to blame. Maybe in the future I might even reply! We have had a busy few days since leaving Nasca. The kids were quite excited when they found we had the front four seats above the driver for a birds eye view of all the street action, near misses etc. I wondered about head on collision out comes. We have really enjoyed Arequipa starting with our hotel which is great, the weather, people, food here and the fun stuff to do. Our first day off the night bus was ... read more

The ride to Bariloche is not for the faint hearted, although I was followed there but the 2 hyper Spanish women. 3am start from El Calafate slightly south to Rio Gallegos 5 hours away, then a half an hour wait for the next bus north to Comodoro 11 hours away, although my journey was delayed at one of the county borders due to someone on my bus being called into the police...Due to this only a quick hour wait then north west to Bariloche, 15 hours away. What a fun ride... The good news was I become an Auntie half was to Comodoro! Yay!! Bariloche is a small town in the Argentinian Lake District, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Local specialities of Wild Boar, Venison and Trout but most importantly chocolate! Spent the afternoon wandering around town ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail April 25th 2006

We were going to do the 4-day Inca trail. Day 1: A train takes us to start of the trail. This day is mostly quiet, just walking uphill on the old inca trail which is made up of broken steps now. The altitude was having an effect and our going was already slow. On the way we saw some old ruins, had a nice soup based lunch prepared by the cook. On the way it had started raining a bit, but we were prepared of that. At a high point, we stopped and the guide told us about the trail and ruins etc. It was nice surreal place, covered in clouds on the path of famous Incas. Day 2: Today is the toughest day of hike. We will be climbing 1500ft, then down 1500ft and then ... read more

South America April 25th 2006

... read more

We arrive in Arequipa at night time, the city looks huge, and we manage to ignore the taxi drivers stories about how bad our chosen hostel is. We have been recommended this choice and taxi drivers sometimes get commission from hostels so will try to persuade you to go to their hostel. Glad we stuck it out, this hostel looks like a grand mansion compared to what we have been staying in. We get offered coca tea as soon as we get there and sit up on the roof with a view over the city with Anne an english girl who was on the bus with us. We all go out for tea at well presented but cheap Turkish kebab place. I like Arequipa already! the city is full of life and much cleaner than the ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail April 25th 2006

The Inca Trail is a 43km 4 day hike throught the Andes starting at Km82 and finishing at Machu Picchu the most famous and beautiful Inca ruins in the world. There was 15 in our group, almost all over 25, and we would spend the 4 days negotiating the trail with expert knowledge supplied by our amazing and charming guide Omar, who may be the best Peruvian ever. I knew before signing up it was going to be hard with the second day featuring a 1200m ascent called Dead Womens pass and the third day involving 3600 steps (very loosely applied term, its a very steep rocky trail) down the mountain nick named Gringo Killer due to the amount of serious injuries suffered by tourist. All this at an altitiude which peaked at 4300m and temperatures ... read more

Today I got: a headache a letter from Uncle Jimmy three new students a steak sandwich a round brush Last week I bought a hairdryer for $98 pesos. Today a round brush. My hair is styled. I look like the Lizzz I once knew. She looks hott! Today I drew the line of what I would do for a job. Every Tuesday and Friday I have a class at 8 am way up north. I leave at 6am so I can walk to the subway. Then I take a forty minuted subway ride to the last stop on the D line. I then walk a block and board the 161 and sit back and relax. In an hour I will be at my destination. For the 3rd time my students did not show up. No-no-no. They ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso April 25th 2006

The autumn is about to arrive in Valparaíso, even though it doesn’t seem to mean such a great change in the lives of the people of Valparaíso. Some of the people that are contracted might have a week or two of winter holidays to look forward to in July, but the majority keep on working or whatever it is that they are doing as usual. In the organisation where I’m working we are about to start with a new concept. It’s very exiting and very new, but so far it’s just an idea and we have still to find out how we’ll go on the implementation stage. The concept is called planning ahead. It was at this weeks staff meeting that the co-ordinator presented the revolutionary idea of making a plan of the activities of the ... read more
