South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Mar del Plata April 28th 2006

We left Mendoza on our favourite transport, the trusty bus!! We thought it would be a good idea to go to Rosario a riverside town on our way to Mar Del Plata. however when we go there we only managed to stay there for only 3 or 4 hours!!! It is a beautiful spot, but at the time there were absolutely no hostels/hotels available (unless we were willing to spend $100USD a night). It turned out to be an expensive place as we had to catch a taxi from the bus terminal to our "hostel" then after wandering about for a while trying to find more places to stay, we gave up and headed for the docks to catch a ferry across to Isla Invernada (an island just out of the city)......do you think we could ... read more

South America » Bolivia April 28th 2006

The Border We got off the bus in Argentina just before the border and walked the few hundred metres to get to Bolivia, scoffing down all our fruit and vegies on the way. We went into immigration, a tiny building with no furniture and a dusty floor, signed some forms, had our passports stamped, and then proceeded into Bolivia with exactly zero bag checks. Tupiza We slipped into the last 3 seats on the bus, a bus with seats that were either stuck straight up at a back breaking angle or reclined whether you wanted them to or not. A quick glance up at the piece of metal stuck across the air vents revealed that the air conditioning would not be working any time soon and after spending a considerable amount of time trying to open ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 28th 2006

Santiago We landed in Santiago on 22 April and despite the 6 hour time difference we felt energetic enough to explore the city. It was really smoggy and dry and an interesting mix of 1st and 3rd world. After Santiago we´ve headed South despite it being "off season" and the weather being wintery we´ve made the decision to try and get to the beautiful Torres Del Paine park in Chile. Pucon On route we have climbed an active volcano in Pucon which was great, it took the whole day to climb with crampons and ice picks. It was really awesome to stand at the top and look down into the smoking crater. We slid down on the snow, (on our bums) as the weather closed in. That evening we spent 3 hrs relaxing in the natural ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Pisco April 28th 2006

Thats what the guidebook calls it..... Las Islas Ballistas. Just off the coast of Peru.... near Pisco It was a buzz of wildlife activity. We took a boat across to look at wonders of nature. We saw thousands of pelicans - swooping in to fish, a few penguins- sat on the rocks and loads of seals- being very noisy and smelly! It was many ´firsts´for Lotte, who was unbelievably excited about the whole thing.. especially at the thought of swimming in the pacific ocean! Even tho the water was very cold, after once seeing Lotte run into the North Sea, I knew she would not let this stop her!! And of course, it was great fun!! Even for Lo and I (our big first was seeing a pelican!) it was very exciting, so many birds and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú April 28th 2006

The following are excerpts from my journal over the last four days or so: 24 April - Monday 11am. Our passports were not exit-stamped upon leaving Brasil. This is a formality that is apparently often skipped, but another English-speaking tourist on the bus last night told us we'll probably run into problems trying to get back into Brasil later without the exit stamp. So we went back to the border this morning to take care of it. Not a problem, despite a wasted morning. But it's okay! We're both healthy and should have no problem making up for lost time at the Falls. 5pm. The falls were beautiful. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Poor Niagara." I don't think I drank enough water. Not feeling so good. 8pm. My body aches in ways I've never felt before. ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pantanal April 28th 2006

Bonito Bonito wins the award for most clever tourism slogan - "Bonito é bonito" ("bonito" means "pretty" in Portuguese). Slightly more clever is the slogan "Bonito é lindo," which always means "Bonito is pretty." Anyways, Bonito is a very very beautiful place so I guess they have the right to say so. Somewhere in the middle of the state of Matto Grosso do Sul, Bonito is a town where tourism is thriving because of a series of fresh water rivers with exotic fish and water so clear that you can actually snorkel. We arrived in Bonito Sunday morning, after an exhausting night bus trip with three stopovers. Our first day we went to a park close to the city where there was a natural pool with fish, as well as some volleyball and soccer courts. Relaxing ... read more

South America » Peru » Lambayeque » Chiclayo April 28th 2006

I bet you didn´t expect to hear from me again so soon! In the last blog I didn´t talk about the tourist sites we´ve visited around Chiclayo. There are quite a few vestiges of old (pre-inca) civilisations in the region, some of them were only discovered half a century ago (the famous Sipan Lord). We spent a day visiting the Tucume Pyramids, which are the remains of a city part of the Lambayeque/Sican (and afterwards Chimu) reign. A few days before Easter, we went to Motupe to see a famous cross on the top of a hill. People come from all over the country to climb up to the cross and ask for a miracle, but the scenery is also nice. When we arrived at the start of the climb, I felt my stomach was in ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 28th 2006

Well I arrived in Santiago de Chile on April 10th and have been very busy for the last 3 weeks or so. If you pardon the pun, it seems to be a little more chilly here. Seems there is an air current on this side of the Andes from the south and is a lot drier than in Argentina. Santiago was amazing. Only around half the size of Buenos Aires (still 7 million people or so)and with a less european feel to it. They don´t seem to have any water restrictions here at all as the green areas in the city are definitely greener than in BA and there is also an actual system of garbage disposal here that seemed to be missing in BA.!! From here I have spent some time seeing the sights from ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus April 28th 2006

Just a real quick one, sorry no photos as many computers do not have cd drives. After a brief stopover in Fortaleza and pretty short flight that deviated through Belem we have made it Manaus. Manaus is located halfway up the Amazon, pretty much smack bang between the mouth of the river at Belem (coastline) and Tabatinga, the border city, Brazillian side to Peru.. Today we did a day trip to check out the point where the Amazonas and the Rio Negro meet, which is pretty cool phenomenon as the water from each river is a different colour - yellow & black. We also headed out on little motorised canoes just off the main river to inspect the vegetation and have a chance of seeing some wildlife. We saw macaques, an aligator, maccaws, parrots and a ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 28th 2006

Wow, wow and double wow! I have just undertaken a 6 hour journey by bus across the Andes to Santiago, Chile and boy did I never think I would see scenery that stupendous! The air was crystal clear and the sky was blue as we wound our way up to the tunnel to Chile at a whopping 4,300m. I had taken some diamox for the altitude which had the somewhat disconcerting effect of producing a strange tingling sensation in my fingers and feet. I have to admit the altitude effected me less than I thought considering I am asthmatic but waiting in line for the (extremely tedious) border crossing into Chile, I did find myself feeling light-headed. Despite this, the trip was incredible and we got crystal clear views of Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the ... read more
