Hi all, Well we are back in NZ now so I thought one last blog to finish our tales would be appropriate! After 5 days in Florianopolis (Brazil) we parted company with Gary who was headed to Rio de Janeiro and Mike and I back to Buenos Aires so we could arrange out flights back to Auckland. Floripa was awesome although for the last three days the weather packed it in however we had rented a car and so were still able to travel around the island and do some sightseeing. It was a place full of pristine beaches and stunning water - summer would definately be a goer here as the population swells to about 800,000 - mostly Americans though - pity really :@) Anyhow Mike and I after 26 hours on three different buses ... read more

Well it has been a little while since we have been in touch, however before I fill you in on what we have been up to and some of you may be aware of this already but Mikes Nana unfortunately suffered a stroke a couple of weeks back and so we have decided to head home to see Nana and spend time with her and the family rather than continue to Europe. For those of you who know Nana she is doing well and was able to return safely to NZ on Tuesday from Canada where her and Grandad Mike were holidaying. Ok so to continue on I think the last you heard of us we were in Arequipa, South Peru. Well after (yet another) 14 hour bus we arrived back in Lima and were out ... read more

May 1st 2006

Well after leaving from Puno and Lake Titicaca we arrived in the city of Arequipa - the second biggest in Peru and we were all pleasantly surprised at how nice the city was! So after arriving we we decided to do a two day tour to the Colca Canyon the second deepest Canyon in the world (disputed to be the deepest by some Polish students) and second only to a Canyon just down the road from it and deeper than the Grande Canyon. Anyhow after setting out at about 7.30am in the morning we stopped along the way to see some Vicuna a type of deer thing but related to the alpaca and llama. We also saw more massive mountains and volcanos and crossed to 4910m !! After a bit of Coca Tea we were on ... read more

Well what a day - Machu Picchu was awesome! We had a wicked day - I wil let the photos speak for themselves! We decided not to do the Inca Trail - one it was bloody cold at night in Cuzco and our sleeping bags wouldnt have been up to it but the other reason was that the trail had suffered several major mudslides. Fortuantely we ran into some kiwis who had told us this and so we decided to flag it as you werent able to walk into the ruins - you had to walk into Agua Calientes (the town nearest Mchu Picchu) and catch the bus up just like everyone else - defeating the purpose really after hammering yourself for 4 days! The tours groups were not telling people this until they had paid ... read more

Well after a few days in Lima due to Semana Santa (easter) and all the transport and accomodation being fully booked we were finally able to get out and headed south to Ica and out to the oasis town of Huancachina. We spent just two nights here - Mike and I did the wineries in Ica while Gary visited the bars in Ica! Wineries were classic and our guide was great - able to practice our spanish and on more than one occasion he got to practice his english! We left Ica at 6pm on Monday and for 16 gruelling hours made our way to Cuzco. The bus was comfy enough however we were thrown around all night from side to side and alot of people suffered pretty bad from the change in altutude - little ... read more

So since the last blog our adventures have taken us to San Juan Del Sur via a bus, taxi, ferry, bus, overnight stay, bus, border crossing and taxi to Nicaragua where as I think I have previously mentioned we intended to brush up quick smart on our spanish - so after a week and four lessons with our teacher we left Nicaragua a little better off or so we though only to be told dont worry the spanish is different in South America anyway!! Shite!!! Hehe it was an experience to say the least - out tutor was lovely and we had some good laughs! However after a week we were definately scratching to leave as for Mike the surf was rather ave and as you will read in on one of the photos options we ... read more

Well after leaving Purto Viejo on the Cariibean coast on Tuesday we made our way by bus, taxi, bus, ferry, bus, taxi to the Pacific Coast and a place called Malpais. 12 hour journey coast to coast althought if the roads were better would be a hell of a lot quicker - most are even worse than our driveway at home after a cyclone has been through! Potholes the size of small craters - some enought to lose half a bus in! All adds to teh adventure I guess - but try telling our butts that after 12 hours! Since we have been here the weather has been the stunning the beaches more like what we were expecting - beautiful, long and white with consistent and better than average surf - good out back for Mike ... read more
