South America » Brazil » Amazonas November 26th 2006

Things change, and so does my flight ticket. As many times as it can. This time it is for a volunteer work I got here in Amazonas, on the river dolphin, Boto vermelho. It is pink. I applied for work as an intern here a while ago but first of all I didn't know either spanish or portuguese, so that was it. But now, as I am here, I asked again if I could come as a voluteer. It didn't seem likely as they didn't need anyone for only one month, but if I could stay until the end of january it would be ok. I couldn't and thought that was it and started planning a great trip along the east coast of Brazil. I was getting over the frustration of missing out on the volunteer ... read more

South America » Brazil » Ceará » Fortaleza November 26th 2006

20th november- 26th November Fortaleza, admittedly was probably once a very beautiful city. but huge skyscrapers and hotels now hover over the wide sandy beaches....so much so that after 4pm, you can´t help but be swimming in shadow as the sun moves behind the buildings...occasionally escaping through the dense buildings. That said...it has a killer nightlife! i came in search of what has been deemed 'the biggest monday night party in the world!!!' arriving at 11pm on monday, i checked in, got dressed and headed out. Pirata bar (pirate bar) with a ship attached! The vibe was electric, the crowd HUGE, the band couldnt go wrong!!! it was indeed a great night out. i picked random lucky girls to teach me how to dance forro- the dance famous in northeast of brazil! Despite my initial baggings, ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana November 26th 2006

Copacabana, Bolivia On leaving Cusco it was apparant that the squitz were not going to abandon us and for the 14 hour bus ride to Copacabana in Bolivia, immodium was again our friend and we now own a proportion of the company which makes the tablets! The bus journey was difficult to say the least. Not only was it one of the most likely journeys to get your bag stolen on, but driving high through the Andes we encountered an extreme thunder and lightening storm. We were sat at the very front of the bus and had a birds eye view of a large thunderbolt land not 10 feet away from the bus, this was the only thing that made the bus driver slow down. The bus was very cold, so our next purchase was to ... read more

Canoa Qebrada 26th November- 27th November A quiet fishing village perched between white dunes and sienna ocean cliffs...postcard perfect! I came her expecting secluded and quiet town, but found another tourist trap. filled with pousadas, restaurants, and tourist shops. However, there was a reason for that...it was indeed beautiful. i took a run along the beach and was puffed out by the time i covered the whole territory of the multicoloured cliffs! at night, i descended down to the beach for your woo-hoo regular beach party at a reggae bar belting out bob marley tunes, whilst everyone drank and partied around the fire. met some brazilians who were generous with their alcohol...and quite open...telling me to go for their female cousin..just too strange!!!! hahaha ...plus im not a fan of braces. it seems to be the ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Andean » Mérida November 26th 2006

So I decided to spend a little more than my budget allowed and I went on a tour of Los Llanos (the plains of Venezuela, only 40m above sea level, extremely flat - some were reminded of Africa, or the Australian Outback - and absolutely teaming with wildilfe!). Here is a brief, or not so brief, recount of the crazy time we had... Day 1: Left the posada at 9am, were told we had to drive for ´a little while´to get to the camp. You know, that´s the interesting thing about this country, EVERYONE lies about the time!! It was about 9 1/2 hours driving to get to the campamiento where we were staying. I wont lie though, the drive was fabulous. The diversity in this county is astonishing. Starting in Mérida we were in the ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca November 26th 2006

We had to be in Cusco (Peru) to start the Inca Trail on Monday the 28th November. So we decided to catch a bus from La Paz, stay over in Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca and then head on to Peru via Puno. We were pretty tired when we got to Copacabana so we did not make it to the Isle de Sol, where acording to Inca legend the sun was born. Lake Titicaca is pretty impressive, being in Boliva it is of course the world's highest lake and is roughly the size of Northen Ireland. We stayed one night before catching a bus up to the border and then on to Cusco. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco November 26th 2006

We arrived in Cusco on the Saturday. We had a day and a bit to pass before we set of on the Inca trail on the Monday. Cusco is the tourist capital of Peru. Muzza estimated a ration of 1:1 with the Peruvians although 80% of all stats are made up (eh Muzza). After travelling for a while in Bolivia, Cusco, is a stark contrast with many English speaking Peruvians happy to persuade you to part with money. Much time was spent walking to and from the Plaza de Armas which is the central square in Cusco and the hub of activity. While in Cusco we hired motorbikes for a couple of days. We drove through the Sacred Valley and visited some markets. Without doubt motorbikes are the best way to see somewhere when you need ... read more
