Hey hey monkeys, Again just a a short note to let you now whats doing....... The past week has been pretty full on......spent 4 days doing the Inka trail.....probably the toughest thing physically I´ve ever done in my life..... day 2 particularly was tough....only about 9kms but reached about 4100m and it was pretty much all up steps at a 45 degree angle for kms on end......really tough...but all worth it in the end when we reached Machu Picchu on the morning of day 4.... After that travelled by plane and boat to Peurto Maldanado and the junle lodge where we spent 3 days..... went from cold cold nights in the Andes to 35 degree days and about 99% humidty....was great though...loved my time in the jungle Which brings me to now ...i´m currently sitting in ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni November 27th 2006

Note that the pics for this blog entry go on for 3 pages! Uyuni and the tour of the Salar Deciding on our next Bolivian detsination wasn´t an easy task. We had originally booked bus tickets to Potosi to visit the silver mines but given Donna´s continuing toilet issues we decided that the confined conditions of mining tunnels would not be the best place to be if you suddenly needed the toilet, especially considering there may be so much methane down there already. So for these reasons we changed our bus ticket to go straight to Uyuni instead and had to travel semi-cama (heaven forbid) for twelve hours. The bus journey wasn´t too bad considering this was Bolivia although the seats didn´t recline too far back and as the bus apporached Uyuni the ride got increasingly ... read more

South America » Peru November 27th 2006

It’s been a while since we’ve blogged, and we’ve covered a lot of ground and gotten quite a bit behind. After toying with the idea of blowing off the whole blog thing, we decided that we’d do what we could when we could, and hopefully if we’re not too busy holding babies when we get back to Washington we’ll have time to finish up this thingamajig sometime before the end of the year. But for now, we’ll turn back time a month, and go back to where we left off way up in Ecuador. It seems so long ago now. (Picture wavy lines going across your screen like from Scooby Doo to signal our trip back in time.) Heading into Peru, Paul and I were really looking forward to a couple of peaceful days lying on ... read more

South America » Peru » Amazonas » Kuélap November 27th 2006

The trip to Kuelap was an adventure. We decided to go after hearing from a few travelers and our guide book about how amazing it was. We heard that it was recently rediscovered and is the future Macchu Picchu of northern Peru, just not as touristy and busy. So even though it wasnt in our original travel plans we decided to go for it anyway. The only problem was how we were going to get there. We were in Cajamarca when we decided to go, and there were two options to get there: rough it by jeep for 20+ hours on unpaved rocky roads that could possibly be flooded because it was rainy season in the mountains, or head back to Chiclayo by a confortable bus on a paved road and then take another comfy bus ... read more

The Nazca Lines South America » Peru » Nazca » Nazca Lines By TheTouringTexanNovember 27th 2006Andrew Stone Husmann The Nazca lines are extremely large, old formations carved into the deserts of Nazca, which have been well preserved over hundreds and thousands of years thanks to the lack of precipitation. Only recently have anthropologists come up with a likely theory as to their purpose. They think the giant formations were used for ritual processions, led by the shamans. Some of the designs are of animals, in which the community is asking for some attribute associated wit... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza November 27th 2006

Mendoza was kind of an afterthought and I'm still kicking myself for my stupidity in not providing for more time there. We had to take a bus from Santiago to Buenos Aires and since we didn't much like the idea of spending 23 hours on a bus and since the bus route to BA would take us through Mendoza, I thought: "what the hell, let's spend a day/night there." We could have easily spent a week. Its a beautiful little city and there's plenty to do. We shall return...... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu November 27th 2006

So the Inca trail was brilliant. We left early on the Monday morning for our 4 day hike to Machu Picchu, our guide Henry provided was excellent throughout providing a tonne of facts and interesting snippets about Peruvians, the Incas and all sorts of other South American bits and bobs. Throughout the walk you witness wonderful views and we were very luck with the weather. Our porters who carry all the food for the 4 days and the tents would look after us putting up the tents and waking us each morning with tea and coffee. Getting up at circa 5am each morning is really no problem when you go to bed when it is dark about 8pm. On the second day Henry said that we were going quite quickly and that it may be a ... read more

South America » Colombia » Barranquilla November 27th 2006

1. English first 2. Español abajo Hola from Barranquilla Welcome to my first update from Colombia. For those of you who haven’t heard from me and are probably thinking “weren’t you in Asia??”, I have been living in Barranquilla, Colombia, for the last month and a half. I hadn’t seen my girlfriend Rochy since she finished her job in Leeds last June, so coming here to be with her was my first priority after getting back from my travels around Asia with Indie. Besides, I am not starting work til March, so why not chill out in the tropics for a couple months? My experience here so far has brought me to meet a wide range of Rochy’s family and friends, ranging from the much-anticipated ‘Meet the Parents’ scenario to going out drinking and dancing ... read more
