Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

What a night!! We had to get into our hammocks as soon as it got dark. Above the sounds of the ever present insect noise, the first things to hear was the frogs. This carried on for a couple of hours and then partway through the night there was strange sound like a hoarse lion. Rubens said that this was a jaguar - this made my night as they are very rare. Then around midnight the howler monkeys started up, they were amazing and were very close at times. In the early hours something came into our camp and started rummaging [View Full Entry]

So we arrive in Rio after the 6 hour bus journey which wasn't bad at all...infact we drove through some wonderful scenery. At the bus station we went to get a taxi however one company refused to take us as we didn't have an address of where we needed to go, just a general area (Botafogo). Luckily another company understood English so we could explain we're heading to an area to find a hostel...didn't realise that would be problem. The driver was desperately trying to pursuede us against going there as it was more for locals and not many hostels around [View Full Entry]

Here is our first stop for the day. Clean, quick and cheap. That's our kind of place.
Monday The plans for the day were to return to Minas for some sun and another massage. Jackie wanted to have her "maos e pes" done too. That's fingernails and toenails, or a manicure to you. Plus, it was time for a trip to the Laundromat. So, we walked a couple of blocks to a nearby laudromat and washed all of our dirty clothes in 90 minutes. It cost $17BRL or about $9US. Call me cheap. But with the savings I can pay for a full massage every day for the remainder of our trip. Later in the morning we took [View Full Entry]

I don't know why I got off the bus. I knew it was turning onto the street on which I am currently living, Rua das Laranjeiras (sounds like larangitis). My Portuguese is still pathetic, but with a little effort I could have mumbled through the words to confirm the bus' general direction. But I didn't ask for help, and instead stepped off and into a swarm of drenched Cariocas rushing home from their work day. Now, I too am drenched, trudging, squishing and sliding through the flood that was once a street, soaked to the bone, my umbrella a useless shield [View Full Entry]

Amazon Days 2 - 3 South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus
Manaus Day 2 After a good but hot nights sleep we headed off for a trek through the jungle, the heat was incredible, you just had to step outside and you were covered with a sheen of sweat, as a result there as no point taking a shower - also the showers were full of mosquitoes so it was more trouble than it was worth! The size of Amazonia is mind boggling I was only restricted to one small part and we travelled on Tributaries which were wider than any rivers in England and yet for here they were tiny.

Well i had some crappy news this week which some of you will know about. However this blog is sounding like a sob story so i feel now is the time to inject some brazilian humour into it. If the next few entries dont make people laugh then i give up. Well Brazil started my trip in Manaus, a base for exploring the amazon. Spent 3 nights in the amazon, one night sleeping out in my hammock was amazing however this only came after the brazilian tour guide tried to pull a fast one by saying that the guide was "seriously [View Full Entry]

We've been so busy in the last 3 weeks that we've not had any time to blog! Sorry! We finally located our missing tour leader, who we reckon had been off on a 2 day jolly with yet another girlfriend from a previous tour that he led! We got an overnight bus to Iguazzu Falls and the girlfriend joined us for the journey!! The falls are stunning and one of the highlights of the trip. We viewed them from both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides and got thoroughly soaked going along the walkways and from the speedboat going under the falls. [View Full Entry]

After 45 days of early starts on our tour, it was nice to have some longer lies and not have a strict timetable full of activities. On Sunday we went to the famous hippie market in Ipanema where Jen was in heaven and GG was bored! Heavy rain put a stop to Jen's fun and Gordon heaved a huge sigh of relief! The next day we went on a tour of a Rio favela! There are many favelas in Rio but Rochina is the only one reckoned to be safe enough to walk around. The British government travel advice says to [View Full Entry]
