Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Jackie loves this sign. It always means she is about to transform herself. Taranto is world class surgeon. One day Maria and I are going to open a business to set this up for you too.
Monday-Tuesday We started today early. Jackie was to be at Doctor’s office at 7:00am for her “tune up.” We got up at 5:45am and discovered that it was already daylight. This gave us time to get dressed and for me to get some breakfast before catching taxi for the ride. It costs about $10 reais or about $6.00 for the ride across town to the office. The surgery went well and Jackie is pleased with the results so far. We will take it easy for a couple of more days. Jackie is sleeping well without the need for pain killers. We [View Full Entry]

This weekend, we had a dance class at school. It was very fun. We learned different ways of dancing in Bahia, lots of feet movements. I also went to the beach on Friday. I haven't brought my camera there, so next time, I'll take pictures of the beach closest to my place-Porto da Barra (double r's are pronounced like "h"), +-30 minutes walk. I went to Leo's basketball game. His team played against another, and I think the tournaments are between different teams in Bahia. He's #8 in the bright yellow uniform. His team played against a poorer situated team (underdog [View Full Entry]

Diomar took our picture in front of the banner for the concert.
By now you get the picture. We came to Brazil for three purposes. The first is to attend Maria’s birthday. It is a big event in Brazil and we have been promising for several years that we would return for her special day. The second reason was to check in with Jackie’s doctor for a tune up. And the third reason was to experience again what I consider the most difficult of all of my job assignments. Have you every climbed Mount Everest? I haven’t either. I often wonder if those that do ever wish to return. Those that have succeeded [View Full Entry]

Tom, Maria and Jackie relax as we wait for others to join us.
Saturday This is a repeat blog with new photos. When we went to Maria's birthday party on Saturday, September 12, I discovered that I had left the battery for my camera back in the hotel in its charger. So, I then decided to use my iPhone camera only to discover that its battery was very low and, of course, I did not bring the charger. So, I depended on the use of another camera that a family member brought to the party. It took a while to get a copy of the digital photos. I have them now and will share [View Full Entry]

Its that time of year again - holiday time and my next adventure involves travelling round Brazil with a couple of side trips to Paraguay and Argentina thrown in. The main areas I will be visiting are the Amazon rainforest near Manaus, then Iguassu Falls, Rio then chilling out on the tropical Island of Ihla Grande. Not sure how often I will be able to update the blog, if not possible during the trip itself will have to complete retrospectively when I get back. My first destination is Manaus in the heart of the Amazon, to get there I flew with [View Full Entry]

My journey didn't start off too well when a young French lady sat next to me on the plane. I got the distinct impression she had been sleeping rough for a considerable period. My concerns were confirmed when she removed her shoes and jumper to unleash a quite repulsive barrage of odour - much to Valentina's amusement. After 12 hours next to the young lady I was pretty pleased when we arrived in Rio. Our next obstacle was to get to our hostel - the taxi we'd arranged didn't appear to be there so we had to enter into negotiations with [View Full Entry]

This bar was next door to the hotel where I lived the first two months in Brazil. It is now called Sushi Beer but the same place. Spend many hours here.
Thursday, September 10 We slept late today. Jackie and I went to the breakfast bar at the hotel and were very pleased with the choices. If I eat breakfast there every day I will gain a ton of weight. After breakfast, we went for a walk in Savassi. This area is the equivalent of Buckhead with lots of shops and restaurants. Most shops are modern and chic. Our plan was to set up the operation of a cell phone for use while we are here. On Wednesday evening, Ester Maria gave us a Vivo cellular sim card. We tried it in [View Full Entry]

I know it's an odd title but it's the best I could come up with. The Parque Nacional Lencois de Maranhenses is literally at the end of the road, to keep going east from here - which is what we wanted to do - needs off road 4x4's, plenty of time, a lot flexibility and tons of patience. We don't have some of these so went on a long day trip from Sao Luis, it was a good decision and well worth the travel time, the place is sensational. After a 5am !!!!! start we got to Barreirinhas where we transferred [View Full Entry]

Hi! My family took me out to eat pizza the other night, and they do eat it with forks and spoons! The waiter comes out and puts a slice of pizza on your plate and you commence slicing it up. It was a thin crust without tomato sauce. We had two types of pizza, shrimp (my brother likes shrimp and tends to order shrimp dishes) and mozzarella. The shrimp pizza had cheese like cheeswiz cheese...hmm.. Anyway, it was interesting. The next day for lunch, I had this bean dish with sausages, meat dish with carrots, and some squash-type cucumber-looking like thing [View Full Entry]

The boat we came on from Sao Luis on the left.
Yesterday we took a trip from Sao Luis to Alcantara which is a bit over 20km away by boat - the only way to get there. There were a handful of passengers for the crossing which was a bit choppy - a swell of ~2m and whitecapped waves - but only a bit over an hour so not too bad. Alcantara is an interesting place and great for a day trip. It was built in the 18th century, fell into decay, is now being partially restored but still has a few derelict buildings and mansions in amongst the habitated places. After [View Full Entry]
