Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

I took this photo as we left the rental agency after I noticed that the gage showed only half a tank of gasoline. The contract indicated that it was full.
Friday We had planned pretty much the same today as we did on Thursday. But as you would have read, we did nothing on Thursday. So, when we woke today we decided to venture out of town. It was time for me to drive again in Brazil. Up to now we were taxied around or with Maria. So, we headed out to find a rental car agency, which we did by 9:30am. This became another test of my Portuguese but it worked. We rented the car for a day. Then we drove on the 'road to Rio' for about 60 miles [View Full Entry]

Again our bus took longer than sheduled although this bus only took 14 hours instead of 13 which was not too bad at all, stuck the headphones in and tried to get some sleep. Our last day in Salvador was quite lazy, all we did was wander around the old town and try and find somewhere to have lunch. After that it was back to the hammock in the hostel to chill out till our bus journey! We met a guy from Chile (Matiusz I think) on our bus who is going to Olinda so we decided to travel together for [View Full Entry]

Well, we made it. That´s surprising considering the trials it took to get here. I want to say thanks to Brad for taking me to Checker Auto Parts to get a new battery for my ´91 pick-up that was sitting void of life in the middle Fox street at 9 pm, 8 hours before I had to be on my way to the airport. After an hour and a half wrestling with the ol´SOB we got it started and I made it home. Jess and I made our morning flight after three hours of sleep. 24 hours of airport inflation [View Full Entry]

Thursday Nothing much on this day. We slept late and then went to the tennis club. There was no one around. The men's spa opened at 3:30pm so we just took in the sun, read and waited. I chose a different masseuse. I was glad that I did since the first one just about killed me. After Minas we returned to the hotel for a little rest and then met Maria and Gilberto at 68 La Pizzeria. This is a hot spot for the chic and we had to add it to our list. Maria ran into many of her friends [View Full Entry]

So we left Salvador to go to Olinda via bus (just the 15 hours). We had to negotiate the local bus to get to the station which turned out to be an interesting affair. Once it arrived Daniel got on followed by this man with two enormous bin bags full of empty drinks cans, who snuck infront of me. Before I could get on, the bus driver decided to leave, at which point I began to panic until I saw a very comical scene unfolding before me. Daniel had decided, moving or not, he was getting off that bus and he [View Full Entry]

This was a short walk from the hotel.
Wednesday Today was meant to be a rest day. We have not been doing much lately and that’s worn us out. Actually, our plans were to go to Minas early, get some sun and a massage and lunch. But we seem to have caught the Atlanta disease, rain! Well, not rain but heavy overcast. So, we did not go to Minas at all. We stayed around the hotel until lunch when we walked down to the Restaurant Contemporanea. It is a neat little boutique restaurant with nice a menu. We were surprised to see fruit growing in a courtyard tree. Upon [View Full Entry]

Yes, she loves to have her fingernails and toenails manicured. Besides cuddling with me it is her favorite thing.
Tuesday I hear that it has rained a little in Atlanta while we have been gone. I guess the drought is over there. Maybe the lake will finally get filled and people will be able to water their grass. But you need to know that we had rain too. It rained for about one hour on Monday afternoon. Then on Tuesday the day started out with a few clouds and stayed that way most of the day. It didn’t actually rain but it threatened to and that put a damper on our plans to spend the day at Minas Tenis. So, [View Full Entry]

So it's about 9am September 11th and we're packing up our bags to head to the airport to fly to Sao Paulo...was definitely weird travelling that day! We were glad to be leaving New York when we did as the weather had turned for the worst and it was pouring so we had to re-jig before we set off getting all our waterproofs out! Once at the airport we realised our plane was delayed by about an hour due to the bad weather. All the TVs at the airport were showing what was happening at the World Trade Centre site. It [View Full Entry]

What a night!! We had to get into our hammocks as soon as it got dark. Above the sounds of the ever present insect noise, the first things to hear was the frogs. This carried on for a couple of hours and then partway through the night there was strange sound like a hoarse lion. Rubens said that this was a jaguar - this made my night as they are very rare. Then around midnight the howler monkeys started up, they were amazing and were very close at times. In the early hours something came into our camp and started rummaging [View Full Entry]
