Brazil Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Currently on an island called Ilha Do Mel, 12 hours south west of Rio. Its raining so i thought i´d take 10 mins to blog about a VERY important experience i encountered in Rio that i forgot to mention in my Rio blog...and also to give Brazil some credit following my bashing about how bad the food can be here........... in Brazil they have pay per kilo restaurants! Now we´re talking.....one hungover day in Rio , Nat and i stumbled across a restaurant that we thought was all you can eat. As a massive fan of all you can eats (I [View Full Entry]

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world with vast amounts of wildlife. This was not part of our original itinerary so we were not entirely sure of what to expect. The first signs were not good when we spotted that our guide was missing a finger. Undeterred we set off on a 4 hour bus ride followed by another hour in a 4x4, this last part of the journey took us deep into the Pantanal area so we began to see a bit of wildlife. The back of the jeep soon got very excited when Valentina directed everyones attention [View Full Entry]

Belem South America » Brazil » Pará » Belém
The last couple of days have been busy between buying hammocks and looking at boats for our trip as well as trying to fit in the cultural stuff in Belem. On the first night we went around the markets to find some dinner, we found a lovely little stand kind of thing where we had steak, rice noodles all four around 3euro, not bad eh?!! We tried to find a bar afterwards to have a few drinks but everything seemed to be closed after dark so we had to have a quite night in the hostel. The next morning Phillipe was´s [View Full Entry]

I was travelling all night on two separate flights to get to Foz de Iguassu and arrived in the middle of a thunderstorm, it continued to rain all morning. From the airport I had to get 2 local buses to travel initially to the Brazilian town of Foz de Iguacu from where I caught another bus to the Argentinian town of Puerto Iguazu, everything in Argentina is half the price as in Brazil, plus it is a nicer place to stay. The hostel I was staying in was the MarcoPolo Inn, right opposite the bus station for 5 pound a night [View Full Entry]

More Falls

After a good nights sleep in the hostel, it was time to visit the Argentinian side of the falls and at last the sun was out. On this side you could get up very close, there were two routes - one across the bottom of the falls and one at the top culminating in the Gargantua Diablo - the Devils throat, which is a crescent shaped drop where most of the water flows. I spent all day at the falls and they were truly mesmerising, the photos don't do justice to the power of the falling water so I have included [View Full Entry]

Oi! And that´s hello in Brasilian Portuguese, not me shouting at you with poor English! So we´re here in Brasil, the land of Samba, Caiprinhas, beautiful people who dont understand much english (at all) and.....expensive everything!! If there was one thing about coming to Brasil that Nat and i werent prepared for, it was how expenisve this place is and how hard it is to communicate with the locals for day to day things. First example...we arrive at Rio, its boiling, we get in a cab and rather confidently ask the driver, in our well practiced 4 days of Spanish from [View Full Entry]
