Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

After the 2 weeks in Florianopolis, a rather sleepy town, it was time to see the famouse places of Rio! I was looking forward to Ipanema, Copacabana, the Christ and many more. But first I stopped at Sao Paulo, as it would have been a 18 hours journey going direct to Rio. Sao Paulo was really just a stop over, it is an industrial city and not much to see. Also it was time to adjust to higher prices again, it seems nearly as expensive as in Switzerland! I just stayed for one night and wasn't too sad to leave the [View Full Entry]

Saturday & Sunday Wow, we had a great weekend. I have lots to report and pictures to share. On Saturday we took a taxi to Minas Tenis about 9:30am. We thought that would be early enough to find nice a place to set up for a few hours with lawn chairs, table and umbrella. Wrong! On the weekends, you really need to arrive about one hour earlier to claim a spot. That‘s something that we knew before but forgot. Tomorrow when we go we’ll get there earlier. The club is spectacular. It has over 20,000 members and four locations. The club [View Full Entry]

Well Its after 12 at night and I am getting a 27 hour bus in a few hours but thought IŽd give a quick update of the last few days. Just after I wrote my last blog the guy who lent me his laptop turned out to be very friendly and he and his wife invited us to stay in their home in Rio before we got our bus to Salvador. I can now see why it is hard to leave Rio. We got the ferry back to Brazil with Danielle and Junior which was nice a calm. The car journey [View Full Entry]

FRIDAY We had lots of fun today. For the first time in a week we did not have to get up early to see the doctor. We slept late and awoke to another beautiful day in BH. We decided to walk down to the Mercado do Central. It is about 1.5 miles from our hotel but the weather was perfect for a long walk. On the way we passed the Laundromat that our concierge had recommended and checked it out. Our plan is to return next week for self service. Maria says there is a nearby Laundromat so we will check [View Full Entry]

Thursday Another day started with a trip to the Docs. Jackie got almost all of the stitches removed and looks pretty much back to normal. Except she looks like a teenager. I hope he did not misunderstand me when I told him in my poor Portuguese that I wanted her to look like when I met her. Maybe he thought we went to the same high school. Anyway, we walked back from the clinic to the hotel. The weather here is wonderful. Each day starts about 66 degrees and heats up to about 85. And the humidity is low. There is [View Full Entry]

Wednesday We had another quiet day starting with an early morning visit to Doctor Taranto’s office. After returning to the hotel we rested until about noon when I walked down to pick up my laundry at the 5-a-Sec (this is pronounced in Portuguese as Cinc-a-Sec). I chose to carry the clothes there since it appeared that the hotel rates were too high. I found out on Tuesday when I dropped them off that the rates were about the same. What we had was normal for about one week: 12 pair of underwear, 3-pair blue jeans, 1-pair pajamas for Jackie, some tee [View Full Entry]

This and the next four pics. It connects the upper city to the lower city. I haven't taken it yet, but I believe it costs 5 cents.
Pelourinho-or Pelor for short, is the historic center of Salvador. The word Pelourinho derives from a word meaning "whipping post". Salvador is currently the cultural center of Brazil because it is the oldest city in with deep connections to its colonial past and it was the first capital of Brazil from the 16-18th century. Slaves used to be brought here to work on the sugar plantations, but later, coffee and mining in the southeast became more important and the capital moved to Rio de Janeiro, and later to Brasilia. Salvador has been in the decline ever since. The population is around [View Full Entry]

First beach after driving from the city.
Natal doesn't get much of a mention in the guidebooks but it's a pretty good place. Yesterday (Sunday) the place was lively, the beach was full of Brazilians, the restaurants busy, it was a nice place to be, probably nicer than the places the guidebooks do mention which are often full of the same people we've seen in other places. Today we've had a great fun day in a beach buggy on the beaches and in the dunes around Natal. The driver was excellent speeding up and down the faces of the dunes, spinning the back end around, pointing out interesting [View Full Entry]

Jackie loves this sign. It always means she is about to transform herself. Taranto is world class surgeon. One day Maria and I are going to open a business to set this up for you too.
Monday-Tuesday We started today early. Jackie was to be at Doctor’s office at 7:00am for her “tune up.” We got up at 5:45am and discovered that it was already daylight. This gave us time to get dressed and for me to get some breakfast before catching taxi for the ride. It costs about $10 reais or about $6.00 for the ride across town to the office. The surgery went well and Jackie is pleased with the results so far. We will take it easy for a couple of more days. Jackie is sleeping well without the need for pain killers. We [View Full Entry]
