Although public transport in and arround Perth is far better than the UK we were becoming tired of waiting for busses. So the decision had been made we would buy a van, in doing so we would save money on hostels (about $7000 per year each), have more privacy and the freedom to go where busses dare not. After scouring the "Quokka" (the Aussy answer to Freeadds) and looking at a few real lemons, most with more snaggs than a russian web site about donkeys and dwarfs.... In an act of despiration we forked out another $2.20 and bought the Sunday Times as it was said that it had a good car sales section. I know strange buying a car out the Sunday Times and without a small African country to pay for it.. We had ... read more

And so we hit the road south from Perth with the vague idea of doing a loop, maybe taking in a stretch of the south coast of Western Australia, before coming back up toward Perth and continuing on to Darwin where we had to return the campervan in 6 weeks. The ‘Stray Flies’ shot is a reference to the biggest annoyance is Australia...not the crocodiles, the snakes, spiders or sharks, but those little black things, the reason behind the ‘Australian Wave’ - a frantic flapping of arms around the head, witnessed across the country! There’s not a lot of commentary to go with the photos, as with most of our travels, plans were vague/non-existent and we just stopped if we saw anything interesting or somewhere nice to swim. Basically we camped for free wherever we ... read more

I was convinced that Gina’s blood curdling scream would have made even Helen Keller run for the door. The subsequent stares and eventual laughter from the crowd came as no surprise. Typically strong willed and not easily scared, my wife had the unfortunate pleasure of being the target of a practical joke. As the guide on our flashlight-lit tour of Fremantle prison explained how the chain link mesh was installed above the main floor where we were standing to protect guards from prisoners’ aerial assaults, a life-sized cotton dummy hurtled from the darkness and landed directly above Gina. She had spotted the projectile mere milliseconds before its impact and reacted with the agility of a deer caught in an 18-wheeler’s headlights. En route to Cervantes the morning prior, Gina determined that we should overnight in Fremantle, ... read more

Early start - which soon became a common practice on this tour! Our first stop was a wildlife centre in Greenough, where we fed some gorgeous kangaroos, & saw white dingoes, camels and many snakes. Being the last one in the group to sit down due to Ellie's fondness of the kangaroos, she was given the task of handling all the snakes, and putting them around all the nervously awaiting group members necks. At first what seemed a daunting task, Ellie became quite confident with the various snakes, even though they kept increasing in size. It helped knowing that they were non-venomous, although if agitated they may be quite capable of harming someone. The extreme tightness felt as two of the snakes clung around each person's neck was quite an interesting experience. Even Nick has become ... read more

By the time we reached Perth, we had come to associate Qantas Airlines with hard landings and this one was no different. Surprised that the aircraft had not disintegrated on touchdown, Gina and I exchanged a sigh of relief and began collecting our bags. Since it was now almost three in the afternoon, we hurried to the Avis counter hoping to salvage some daylight. Instead, we were greeted by a sign reading: “We are experiencing computer issues and apologize for the delay.” An hour passed before we received our car. Exhausted by our travels, we navigated towards the lodging I had booked using Wotif.com. During the early part of our stay in Australia, someone had mentioned the Expedia-like site that advertises bargain basement deals for hotels. Having found minor success in its use while in Queensland, ... read more

Today we commenced our 8 day outback tour from Perth to Exmouth - 3600 km, a vast distance. It is hard to explain the emptiness & peacefulness of the outback. The red soils known as 'pindan' in aboriginal is caused by iron oxidation, the dry vegetation and masses of bush scrub. Driving for miles watching the scenery, and spotting many skeletons of dead kangaroos found on the side of the huge straight roads (often killed at dawn and dusk). We were pleased that we had decided to travel by bus rather than hiring a car! Our guide 'Trevor' was brought up in the outback and had many aboriginal friends, and certainly prefers this way of life to the busy Perth city life. We were travelling with a small, professional and knowledgeable company 'Red Earth Safaris' Red ... read more

G'day folks, We've made it to the land of Koalas, Roos, Dags, Flaming Gallahs, Alf Stewart and crap sports folk. We're here for about 8 or 9 weeks (not decided yet) to take in a few sights, a few old friends and a few aussie beers (already cracking on well on that front). Got the flight from Singapore over to Perth and it went very smoothly. Nice bit of luxury flying after the Air Asia flights. Got decent tucker and polished off a few coldies on the way over. Mrs Deane has already got stuck into the Australian reds. On the way over I watched Happy Feet and The Devil Wears Prada while Mrs Deane checked out The Departed and Rocky Balboa. I may have got that the wrong way round. Landed and went through the ... read more

Well it's been a blissful week in WA. The sun has pretty much shone on us for most of the week - except for a shower or two on the track on Thursday. I'll get the walk info out of the way & move on to more interesting subjects. Spectacular is the easiest way to describe the scenery here in the south west. If my camera takes one more photo of a tortured, rugged coast line it'll probably freeze up! It's all very much like the Great Ocean Road without the road. We're walking through fairly rugged country, over cliff tops and in the back bush of the "Great" Southern Ocean (we think they need to put "Great" in there - they do it for all other Australian things). We're usually the only two people walking ... read more

HI! After a really lovely last few days in NZ Jack and I went our seperate ways around the world; Jack to Bali and me to Australia! Western Australia is easily one of the nicest places I've been - the landscapes are amazing and the temperature is lovely and hot. I spent the 1st few days in and around Perth, spending lots of time with people I met in the hostel. This included going to various beaches, markets, the shops and Kings Park (you get the loveliest views of the city from it). I also did the cultural thing of going to the art gallery and WA musuem - it was intersting to learn about the Aboriginal culture, it's totally different from the Maori's in NZ, and really makes you realise how cruel the 1st ... read more
