One of our targets for our round the world trip is to see as much wildlife as possible, so we decided to make a visit to Rottnest Island - which is situated 19 km off the coast of Perth. On our arrival we quickly became introduced to our first quokka - this is a very rare species as it is endemic to this island. They are small marsupials & are very friendly nocturnal animals & they look a bit like a miniature kangaroo! However the island's name 'Rotte-nest' originated from Willem de Vlamingh in 1969 believing the quokkas to be huge rats, i.e. rat's nest! We decided to hire bikes in order to explore some of the island. First we headed out towards the salt lake Herschel to try & discover the many quokkas hiding beneath ... read more

So after enjoying a relaxing evening the night before, we woke feeling refreshed. Damo and his friend Krista were discussing about how great the Perth zoo was. So it was decided that would be great place to visit. We were not disappointed. The whole place was amazing. Even from an animal point of view. I think the best bit was the crocodile. Which was absolutely huge, I’d say it twice the size of me. We thought it was a model, until it closed its jaw and started to move. I wouldn't want to get in death roll with it. I think it was even sizing us all up through the glass. I also loved the otters as they were all out playing and having fun. Although the whole place was really cool and we really didn't ... read more

A day of travelling today - arrival Perth city. As we had no accommodation booked, we went to the very friendly and helpful Tourist Information. Luckily there was space available at the Comfort hostel in Belmont - positioned just on the outskirts of the city. Following recommendations from our room mates, the following day we went to Peter Pans' travel agency to help plan our travel itinerary. They were very helpful on selecting the right excursions for us - highly recommended. . We were surprised on arrival by the slightly cooler weather compared to the heat we became accustomed to in Malaysia - however we were informed that the breezes were probably caused by the cyclones occurring further up north which are fairly typical of this time of year. ... read more

Yep we’re in Ozztraylea - after a short 32 hour transfer from downtown Beijing we had crossed the Tropic of Cancer, Capricorn and the Equator and made it to Perth. We flew via Sydney, getting a great view of the city when we took off on the last leg, a mere 5 hour/2250 mile hop to the closest bit of Western Australia....I’d forgotten how big this place was. It feels great to be in an English speaking country for the first time in 5 months and I think it’s even more noticeable because of the generally laidback nature of Australians. Even customs immigration were friendly and not only smiled, but were actually joking about the food on the plane!! One exception was the rather miserable quarantine man that insisted on unpacking our rucksacks, disinfecting our ... read more

Sorry to do two updates in one go but we have just got to a place with good cheap Internet! So we left Shark Bay, after seeing the Dolphins we headed out of town stopped in Denham for a while (where we tried to upload last entry) and then a really good ocean park run by a few blokes who basically fish in local area and keep local fish to show people... everything is really close and got to see sharks being fed etc and could touch a sea snake but did not fancy that as it has a bite which will kill you in 10 mins.. An anti venom needs to be taken within 5 mins... there was no anti venom at the place! Saying that they are very placid snake and no one ... read more

So we got settled in with my aunt and uncle - had our first aussie barbie, unfortunately there were no shrimps and our dreams have been somewhat ruined by my cousin who says australians don't eat shrimps on the barbie - it has now become our mission in oz to find one aussie who does eat shrimps on the barbie!! We've been staying in Kelmscott with my aunt and uncle and percy the bird - who's beginning to take a liking to me or at least he's not hissing at me as much!! We've found our ozzie feet and made it into Perth city centre and had a mooch round the shops. Vaughan my cousin took us into Freemantle, where we sampled our first Western Australian ales. An Indian pale ale - which wasn't too great ... read more

Hat nix ... read more

G'day, so we've finally hit ozzie land, although us being us we did of course hit some problems, wouldn't ya know!! We get to Bali airport, on time i hasten to add. I get checked in no probs - hurrah! Michelle on the other hand starts to get questioned about her passport - you know i always suspected it was a fake!! Ha no it turned out she hadn't gotten her visa into Oz and apparently she wasn't allowed to get one in oz, so off the Balinese man went and came back 5 minutes later with a piece of paper saying all was well, so we breathed a sigh of relief and then off to ozzie land it was! Arrived in Perth and went through immigration - Michelle expecting to pay for her visa, but ... read more

So we have spent the last few days travelling up North from Perth... we spent our first night in Kalbarri (6 hours from perth) really lovely coastal town... we then spent the next day travelling up to Shark bay which is off the main highway into a peninsula, named due to having lots of Tiger Sharks in the area, we spent the night camped in Monkey Mia famous for its wild dolphins which visit that beach daily. We woke up at 6.45 this morning (had to drag mel out) and saw the sun rise and then the dolphins arrived for breakfast...although they are wild they have always visited the beach to be fed by the local fisherman.. now this is taken over by the wildlife people who restrict the feeding. You stand ancle deep in ... read more
