Canarvon to Middalya Driving up the northwest costal highway we stop just south of Canarvon at a spot called new beach this was going to be our camp ground for the night. But by the time we had cooked the squid we had caught in Denham the flies were driving us all nuts. Zoe wanted to phone home as her Mum was due out of hospital from her hip operation. Natalie too wanted to phone home, so as we were not impressed with our choice of campsite and there were no quarrels from the boys’ side. We packed up and headed into Canarvon itself which is surprisingly small considering the size of dot it gets on the map. After a quick explore through the town to find there are a few small shops in the centre, ... read more

Having left our royal friends at the Hutt River Province. We travelled up the North West Coastal Highway, where we turned off to visit Shark Bay, A world heritage area, where some of the earliest living organisms are found. Shark Bay is also home to a very diverse marine life, including Dugongs, Dolphins, sharks and turtles. On the land they are trying to reintroduce animals such as the Bilby whose population is now on the increase in the shark bay area. On our way into the area we stop at the old telegraph station at Hamlin pool. Where we once again in search of the illusive stromatalites. Thankfully we found some more information about what stromatalites are all about. They are tiny organisms that helped life on earth begin and evolve due the oxygen they created. ... read more

After arriving rather later than planed the night before, we had a good catch up with Charlie and Natalie, who we had met while we were working at the olive farm. We had left Soulhaven a few days before them and somehow managed arrive in Kalbarri later, but hey we had been having a great time. We had decided that, as we were all going to be heading in the same direction, it would be nice to travel together for a little while. So Kalbarri was our meeting place. There was a lot to do and see in Kalbarri, the only problem being the weather. Our first day together was set to be a rainy one. So rather than waste the day we popped along to the tourist information centre to find a rainy day activity. ... read more

Having finished working at Dandaragan about a week ago. We Finally had Jessie ready to leave Soulhaven. It was nice to be back on the road, just a shame the weather was horrible, the wind was howling and the rain lashing down. We popped in to see Ledge point on the way to Lancelin, not really a lot to see there so carried on our way to Lancelin. Where we camped the night and also enjoy a meal out at the local pub to celebrate being back on the road. The following day we attempted to drive the track from Lancelin to Cervantes. Keen to try out our 4WD skill we headed up in to the sand dunes to try and find the start of the track. On the third sand dune in we almost came ... read more

After our little scare in the sand at Two Rocks we figured it would probably be best if we were to get some training on how to use our big Jessie bus. The first day of the training was bush terrain, when we arrived all the others were there waiting in their shiny new, some straight off the production line 4 wheel drive vehicles and I’m sure they were laughing at us. That just made me more determined to show them up, it’s not what you got but what you can do with it. Our instructor gave us all a quick this is how your car works explaining a few grey areas we had. When we came to the first obstacle, we were to be driving through this big puddle, and up this silly steep hill, ... read more

Well… This is a hard entry to write because working on the olive farm we have learnt so much, met so many people and had so much fun its hard to know where to start. I guess from were I left off on my last entry. We have been taught to drive all manner of vehicles from a quad bike to the Collosus olive harvester. We have made some great friends and having a lot of fun along the way. Zoe and I were primarily the tractor drivers on the day shift, working from seven am to seven pm. These hours were hard especially as we had a forty five minute commute to and from so getting up at five in the morning when it’s cold (yes it gets cold in Australia too) and dark wasn’t ... read more

An unfortunate but predictable eventuality. I needed to earn some cash as nibbling into my savings would not last for long and so with a heavy heart we were off to Perth, to register with every job agency we could find. Alas there seemed to be no work for us rubbish! After a few days of hunting and “we’ll call you.” we did receive a phone call from one company they had a job for one of us the next day making industrial racking as it was described as more of a mans job (GRR) by the agency it was off to work for me. Working for Dexion was pretty easy just like playing with an over sized mechano set. While I worked Zoe was left unemployed, until eventually she found work in telesales…. Sold her ... read more

After about a week of living in hostels Zoe and i were to move down to Freemantle and then spend a week on Rottnest Island, or so the plan was anyway. We moved out of our hostel and jumped on the train to "Freeo", only to arrive and discover there was nowhere to stay. Even if we were to travel to Rottnest there and then, there wasn't even a camping pitch for us. short of getting a hotel for much much more than we could afford we were out of options. We later found out that it was the Scarbrough lifesaving championships and there was a big V8 car race on on the same weekend so every man, woman, child and their dog had decended upon perth and freemantle. Thankfully we had made contact with ... read more

Although public transport in and arround Perth is far better than the UK we were becoming tired of waiting for busses. So the decision had been made we would buy a van, in doing so we would save money on hostels (about $7000 per year each), have more privacy and the freedom to go where busses dare not. After scouring the "Quokka" (the Aussy answer to Freeadds) and looking at a few real lemons, most with more snaggs than a russian web site about donkeys and dwarfs.... In an act of despiration we forked out another $2.20 and bought the Sunday Times as it was said that it had a good car sales section. I know strange buying a car out the Sunday Times and without a small African country to pay for it.. We had ... read more

Well the plane journey was pretty uneventful (just as a plane journey should be), I did get a whole double seat to myself so I had to make the most of it and spread myself out making the most of my cattle class ticket. still it made very little difference to the amount of sleep I got as I didn't manage to get much more than 2 hours. Although when I arrived at my transfer destination Hong Kong I went to buy a coffee to revive my weary head only to find in my haste to be too organized I had left all my bank cards in the scanner back at my parents house in sunny Whitstable! OOPS! So I was flying to Australia with 30 dollars (Australian (about 20 quid)) and 17 dollars 30 ... read more
