Moore River - Nov 2012
Published: November 11th 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinWe've just spent a lovely week up at Moore River for our annual pilgrimage. This year the river had not broken through to the ocean so it was a bit murky and quite full but there were plenty of fish in there for the kids to chase along the shallow banks. The Midgit had a fishing net which worked much better for toddlers attention spans than a 'real' fishing rod which is what he tried to use last year although we didnt actually catch any fish which is probably for the best as neither the Hubby or I really know how to fillet a fish ;) Saturday and Sundays are packed with kids which is lovely with all the banks of the river full of people and people hiring canoes and boats etc. I showed the ... read more
Lancelin - last week in Oz
Published: July 30th 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinMy last week in Australia. I do a few hours work here and there, but mostly I read and enjoy the sun for a change. If you’re looking for a TravelBlog don’t read this, you’ll be disappointed. Come back next week. July 23rd Rough night’s sleep. The rain at four o’clock is loud enough to wake me. Great to listen to, but not so great for dragging my lazy arse out of bed five hours later. Move some gas bottles and run some errands. I collect a washing basket full of paperwork and a laptop from the hardware. Alternate between data entry and wandering around town doing odd chores. I think I have a cold. Sleep eludes me and I spend hours staring at the ceiling. July 24th It takes time to get motivated to get ... read more
There’s some bits in here about getting ready to leave Australia and fly to South Africa, but mostly it’s a diary of working in small town WA. If you’re looking for a real travelBlog don’t read this and then complain to me. July 16th Wake up before I need to so book a one-way ticket to Cape Town, SA ($1,041.18). I’ll be flying out of Perth on August 1st at 06h00 (Flight EK425) and arriving at Dubai at 13h00. A thirteen hour layover (well 12h50) before catching another flight at 03h50 (Flight EK772) and arriving in Cape town at 11h40 August 2nd. Every step since Tasmania has been a step closer towards home, but this’ll mark the start of my homeward journey. Work the cafe ten till three. Relatively quiet. Watch some kids flying a pirate ... read more
Lancelin - Goodbye Winnie
Published: July 16th 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinAnother working week. Don’t read this if you looking for a real Travel blog. July 9th It’s cold. I get up early so I can do a few jobs, but by the time I’ve done my usual routine I’m already running late. Seriously; I lose 20 minutes somewhere. I’m even 15 minutes late getting to the cafe. Busy for a Monday until about half one. At quarter to two July sends me home. My days are getting shorter. :( Stop in and talk to Kim. He reckons he has two days work for me fixing stuff. I talk to him about what I want to do after August 1st; he thinks it might be possibly to give me enough hours to cover rent and food and still have plenty of time off to explore the north. ... read more
Lancelin & a trip to Perth
Published: July 9th 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinSome bits about booking flights from Perth to South Africa, but mostly a work diary. If this bothers you or you are looking for a real TravelBlog don’t read this. July 2nd – flights to SA Working for Kim today collecting branches from houses and running them to the dump. I’m meant to spend the afternoon helping him to fix the truck, but it doesn’t happen so I clock off at lunch. Helen show’s up for a chat whilst I make food. Look online for flight details to SA. Cheapest I can find is $1,000 for August 1st with Emirates. I need to decide if I want to fly to Durban or Cape Town. I think I’ll book this tomorrow. Take the bike for a ride and spend a little too long sat on the beach ... read more

Lancelin - starting to feel the itch
Published: July 2nd 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinAnother working diary. If you are looking for a travel blog don’t read this. June 25th – cold! Starts off warm. Well, warmer than it has been. At the café by ten, but it’s quiet so Kim sends me to Lano at one to do a few jobs for him there. I’m finished and in the hardware by quarter to two. There’s a heater below the desk now so it’s cosy. I finish everything they have for me by quarter past four and they send me home. It’s cold. Kim asked me what days I want off next week. I told him I’ll work all of them. I might want a couple of days off next week before the school holiday rush. June 26th – Swiss chocolate A call from Kim at half eight to get ... read more
If you’re looking for a TravelBlog and not a diary don’t read this. Until I earn enough for my ticket to Africa, there’s not much happening in my travels other than work. June 18th I stop at 19 Horton to pick-up some pot plants before I head to work. They’ve started on the wall to separate the two halves of the house. It’s a quiet Monday in the café. I start a little early so I can help Julie unpack some stuff and mix my day up with a few odd jobs. It’s a late finish since Julie wants to move the furniture around. The café is starting to look real homey. I plan to do some hours at the hardware tonight, but by the time I get back to Lano, claim my $2 from the ... read more
Another working week. If you’re looking for a TravelBlog instead of diary don’t read this. June 4th Work 09h00 – 15h30 The morning is crazy busy. There’s a lull around noon and then another rush just after lunch before fading to nothing again. We sell out of everything. By the time I drop Regan (and the car) back at 19 Horton I know I’m too tired to be driving. The ride back to the Donga isn’t enough to wake me. I’m just climbing under the sheets for a nap when Doug shouts through the wall to help him with the truck. June 5th A day off. I go for a bike ride, I watch a movie, I read on the beach, blah, blah, blah. If I thought writing about work days was dull I have even ... read more
This entry is more diary than TravelBlog. If this bothers you in any way don't read it. May 28th First day off since…? Whatever, a day off means I do minimal work without monetary incentive. I do get food and drink and a good time. Kim sends me a text saying he’ll be around to collect me ‘after nine’, which translates as ‘about ten’. Collect Regan (who’ll no doubt tell you I woke her up, even though she texted me before I was even awake. Stop in the café to see Julie and then into Perth. Coffee bean shopping. I see Regan’s home and scooter (mostly the scooter). Clothes shopping, 5 minutes to buy jeans and shoes. I get a pair of beach shoes, reduced from $69 to $5. Meet Kim’s son Dale. Dale is sure ... read more
Another working week so if you are looking for a TravelBlog don’t read this. Also, no photos this week as I didn’t take my camera anywhere. 21st May It’s cold when I wake at half seven so I hit snooze and roll over. It’s 09h30 when I next check my phone and I was meant to start work at nine. I do manage to work 10h00 – 17h00, Kim and Julie are out of town and I have a clipboard of jobs to keep me busy. Making a sandwich for dinner and Regan sends me a text in Afrikaans. I call and end up taking a ride over there with bread and cutlery. She wants to know what answer I found to her question. She finds my donated clothing funny as it’s not an exact fit. ... read more
