Blogs from Lancelin, Western Australia, Australia, Oceania
Another working week so if you are looking for a TravelBlog don’t read this. Also, no photos this week as I didn’t take my camera anywhere. 21st May It’s cold when I wake at half seven so I hit snooze and roll over. It’s 09h30 when I next check my phone and I was meant to start work at nine. I do manage to work 10h00 – 17h00, Kim and Julie are out of town and I have a clipboard of jobs to keep me busy. Making a sandwich for dinner and Regan sends me a text in Afrikaans. I call and end up taking a ride over there with bread and cutlery. She wants to know what answer I found to her question. She finds my donated clothing funny as it’s not an exact fit. ... read more
Another change of residence
Published: May 21st 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinMore diary than Travel Blog. Again. If this annoys you don’t read it. 14th May Regan has a 07h00 start, I don’t. I kick her out at 10 past when she refuses to move. And snuggle down while she dresses. I know she’ll get her revenge, but the covers are warm and I’m willing to risk it. To the bank to open another bank account, this time at Bendigo (the only bank in Lancelin). Richard gives me a lift to Ledge point and I help out. Work 11h00-16h00 sorting picture wires and amplifiers. After watching Regan do headstands it’s back to Lano to get vegetables from Julie’s garden and a bike for Regan. A glass of wine on the sea shore. Vegetarian dinner and a movie (Puss in boots). 15th May - What do I want? ... read more
This entry is more a diary than a TravelBlog. If this upsets you in anyway don’t read it. 7th May – 3,700 km / 2,300 miles in a day. Goodbye from Allan and Mary. Bus ride from Tully to Cairns: $22, takes 2 hours. Waiting an hour at the bus terminal. It’s a nice day and it’s outside. Ride from Cairns bus terminal to the airport: $12 (because the driver doesn’t have enough change from $20 to give me the ride for $10) Flight from Cairns to Perth: $425, five hours. Kim’s waiting for me at the airport and it’s very good to see him. Lancelin still smells of seaweed and the smell hits me as soon as I get out of the car. Add the sounds of the waves on the beach and maybe it’s ... read more

Lancelin Ocean Classic
Published: January 18th 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinI'm writting this as and when I find laptops so I'm a little vague on what I go up to over the last few days. 14/01/12 - Ocean Classic Morning off. I intend to use it to catchup on e-mails, blog and movies... until I turn my laptop on and find that the harddrive has finally died. At one pm the Lodge run a minibus over the The Ledge to watch the start of the Ocean Classic windsurfing race, I tag along. It's a good show, especially since I've never seen a windsurfing race or that many windsurfers in the same place. Work 18h00-02h00 at the Tavern; putting up fences and running stock. Ten minutes after the party starts a girl steals my hat with a kiss and returns it with a hug. One of the ... read more
8th January No work, no alarm and a nine o'clock lie-in. Free food today includes fresh salad and veg and a large cut of steak!! I look through my bag for a pen and get distracted. I end up repacking my entire backpack. I'll need to repack again when I move on, but it turns out I own less than I thought I did. Losing my books, razor and a few clothes means my bag 'll be a little lighter. 9th January Work 09h00-17h00 tidying the exterior of houses. I tell Julie that I'll be leaving town on or just after the 19th as I know there's a lot of work until then. She offers me work until Easter (when's that?), but I already feel I should be moving on. She says she might be able ... read more
Another working week; if you get offended by reading something that sounds like a diary and not a travel blog don't read it. 2nd January The weather is getting colder and windier. The wind/kite surfers are making the most of it, but even they are feeling the temperature change. It's not even thirty degrees out. No work today so I sleep in until gone nine. I spend the morning sleeping, reading and eating. Four of the eight beds in the dorm checkout today, including Tony. An Australian family I've been chatting with the last couple of days are leaving tomorrow and invite me to diner if I bring some coconut milk along. Sounds fair. I get offered a weekend cleaning job at the hostel to earn some free accommodation if I'm interested and a text message ... read more
End of 2011, start of 2012
Published: January 2nd 2012Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » LancelinNew Years Eve I wake at 08h00 and it's the quietest I've seen the hostel. Normally the kids are up and running around by seven. Work at noon and I have a few things to do, including washing. Why is it I always find one item of dirty clothing after I've hung everything else out? Work 12h00-01h45; clearing tables, setting up fences and stocking fridges. I spend most of the night moving stock from the cellar to the bar, then all of a sudden as midnight is almost upon is the bar empties and everyone is outside. Another rush after the witching hour and the bar closes at 00h20. Doesn't take long for people to leave and by 01h45 everything is back to where it belongs. A free sandwich and free drinks (for those that are ... read more
Still in work mode so this'll probably read more like a diary than a Travel Blog. If this bothers you don't read it. 26th December It's going to get cosy in the dorm room, all eight beds are now taken. I thought the hostel was busy before but there's even more people here now, including families. It'll be tough finding a quiet spot to read and near zero chance of getting a hammock. Work 10h00-16h00; cleaning, laundry and putting bins out. Pay for another weeks lodging; which involves them taking my money out of one draw and putting it into another draw as their money. Steak sandwiches for dinner. I join the regular lodge residents in a social wander to the pub. The management keep telling the backpackers to come in and work because of the ... read more
Christmas eve No work today. Get up, eat, read, shower, read, to the shop for a supplies over Christmas (steak & ice cream). A phone call from the Endeavour Tavern, can I go see them. I go see Angelina(?) and she offers me work over New Year, the hours sound terrible (14 hour shifts), but the money sounds good (~$19 base; double and double & a half for the days they want me). They want me to stay-on until Easter, same as the handyman job. Maybe I'll hang around here longer than I planned and earn some money? Back at the hostel Simon and I are trying to figure out which Indiana Jones film was first (Temple of Doom or Raiders of the lost Arc). Too lazy to move from our hammocks I play with my ... read more
