MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!
I've had really mixed feeling's about Christmas in Perth, I was excited as it wa gonna be hot and very different, but was also struggling with the idea of my forst christmas away from my family, but when it came to it, I had an awesome few days.
Finn and I started to get eveything ready on Christmas eve whilst Tony was at Work so that we could head off as soon as he got home. It was a bit of a stuggle getting motivated as the weather was hot and neither of us were feeling that great, but we did it...eventually and once the car was loaded and Tony back from work, we got on the road. The drive up to Lancelin, which is North of Perth, was fairly uneventful, but from Lancelin onwards it was all offroad on sand...for 2 hours!!! Thankfully we didn't get stuck, but we did get bumped and thrown all over the place. The scenery was pretty stunning though, every now and then coming across huge white sand dunes, that almost looked snow covered they were so white. We eventually arrived at Wedge, which is a really bizarre little shack
town, but was apparently built as a base for crayfishing froma nd has since turned into a bit of a holiday adventure playground. There were loads of boys with theior toys - lots of quad bikes and dirt bikes and big 4x4 vehilces with hige tires trying to drive across the sand dunes. We were staying in a shack that belonged to a friend of Finn and Tony's called 'The Spang Shack' (The Aussie's apparently have 'Spang Jackets', which are jackets they wear on a night out that they don't mind getting trashed or lost etc, that's the only explanation I've had for 'spang'). The shack pretty much what it says on the tin, but the beach was awesome. We got ourselves set up - I put the tent up outside, and we went down for a swim. It was a really white sandy beach with stunning turquoise ocean, although rather cold!! We spent most of the evening messing around, then had an early night, ready for the big day!!
CHRISTMAS DAY!
After a not particularly comfarotable nights sleep, I woke up to find my tent was getting on for a sauna and could hear Finn
and Tony moving about, so got up to see what St. Nick had left for us!! ALthough he seemed to forget where I was this year I still had my stocking to open from home, and we had a bacon sarnie before we went for our first dip of the day. AFter a good old mess around we came back late mornign to get the barbie going and to get all the food prepared. My Christmas dinner consisted of barbied pumpkin, sweet potatoe, beer can chicken (poor thing), some huge prawns and a bottle of sparkling shiraz (a real find - red wine that you can drink cold, and therefore enjoy on a hot summers day - awesome). The food was SO good, I can't tell you just how good. We had our fill and let it all settle before abandoning the dishes and heading back to the ocean, to get out of the heat. 38 degree heat, a huge bbq and lots of hot food left us roasting!! We then spent the rest of the day in adn out of the sea, picking at left overs and drinking Jim Beam and coke in a can!! It was so good,
and so chilled out, still a little bit odd being so hot, but a fab experience.
BOXING DAY
We got up this morning to sweltering heat, so did all the dishes and packed everything up before 9:30am, and started off on the journey homeward. The journey wasn't much fun today in the heat, and after the over indulgence of the day before, but we eventually got to Lancelin, and pulled onto a beach for a dip before heading back to Perth. However the beach wasn't quite as easy driving as the rest of the beach and Bertha, the land cruiser, took quite a bit of persuadign to get through the sand. Finn and I left the car to cool down to have a cool down of our own in the sea. It was the last hurdle in which we were nearly off the beach but in reall soft sand that almost had us stumped until an adonis and his girlfriend came over to lend us a hand and helped us off the beach.
We got back to the house, after a lovely snooze in the car, to find ot was like a mega hot oven!!
The Spang Shack
This was the view from my tent on Christmas Morning!!! We unloaded, and showered (FINALLY) and then after a quick chat to my lovely family, we went out to meet Finn adn Tony's group of friends for a drink. We were amazed to find howevere, that that was much easier said then done, we drove around pretty much the entire Swan Valley (local wine and beer producing area) and found that everywhere was closed. We did eventually find a dodgy pub, where we had a few rinks before grabbing an awesome chinese and headin back to the sauna!!
All in all an awesome Christmas, that I certainly won't forget in a hurry!! Thanks so much to Finn and Tony!!
