Been There Licked That
Melissa Aspinall
In one courageous or completely out of our minds crazy leap my husband, our daughter and I have left our current place of residence, packed up our current lives and decided to take off to Europe for three and a half months.
We have no set plans beyond a return ticket in and out of Paris, the first 8 days accommodation and a car lease for the remaining 90 something days. Anyone who knows me laughs at this because I am a planner. I usually travel knowing the day to day itinerary down to the minutest detail including where we might eat and exactly what train we will take. I am attempting to remain calm and try this 'freestyle' travel but inwardly I am freaking out.
The title of this blog is in honour of our little frequent flyer, Miss Em, who at the age of three (3) has gained her silver frequent flyer membership, having traveled to Tasmania, Sydney, China and Japan as well as countless trips from Perth to the Pilbara in North of Western Australia.
It is during these trips that she has developed an amazing immune system as her preferred way of discovering things has always been to lick it. I'm not talking food here (Oh no I can't get her to try anything new in that department) I'm talking the sand at the beach in Perth, the window on water taxi in Sydney, the McDonalds restaurant in Tassie, the hand rails on a cruise ship in China and the best yet the Sydney Harbour Bridge I'm not overly proud of this as a mother who tries to keep a watchful eye but what are you to do when she takes any opportunity she can get. I hoping that she has grown out of this habit as we venture to Europe but we'll see.
Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither suffer much nor enjoy much for they live in te grey twilight that knows no victory or defeat
