Pete and I had a great flight home. We took our time to get off the plane. Stocked up on duty free. Then got through customs with no problems to be met by Amy and Joseph. It was such a surprise to see them both there. Joseph has certainly grown in the short time we were away. He has cut his first tooth, able to sit up on his own and is rolling over to his stomach. We ended the day with a coffee before heading home.... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Our last day in Rio was a short one. We had a stroll along the beach in the morning. On Sundays they close one half of Atlantico Avenue which stretches along Copacabana Beach and the Cariocas (i.e. those born in Rio) all come out to promenade, run, jog, walk their dogs and children etc in the sunshine. It was fun to watch the passing parade. Then it was finishing the packing, and checking out. We said goodbye to some of our fellow travellers as they were on different flights and then were taken to the airport for the long flight home. Two hours in the lounge at Rio airport and then a four hour flight to Santiago. Another three hours in the lounge there and then the 12 hour flight to Auckland. Fortunately, the flight ... read more

We flew into Adelaide from Brisbane and picked up our Holden hire car. Our home for 4 days was a small colonial style house. It was a short 20 minute walk into Adelaide centre through some nice parkland. There were many colourful birds flying about and several cricket games in progress. Our walk took us down to the Murray riverside and we sat outside and had some drinks overlooking the river and the Adelaide Oval stadium. In the evening we found a good Moroccan restaurant to round off the first day. The next day was spent touring the Adelaide hills. Our tour started at Mount Lofty with panoramic views of Adelaide. We then visited Hahndorf an old German settlement. Finally we enjoyed some beer at The Old Woolen Mill and some wine tasting at Lobethal from ... read more

WOMADELAIDE 2014...Music is the Weapon of Choice. Her song was the Anthem of the Arab Spring..."Kelmti Horra"..."My word is Free"...ringing through the streets of Tunisia...her name Emel Mathlouthi. His journey was exploring and preserving the drum culture of his people...his music inspiring the disenfranchised indigenous peoples of West Papua...his band Airileke. His life was to continue the vision of his father Fela Kuti...their music Afrobeat...uniting the masses in protesting corruption and poverty in his beloved Nigeria...who opened the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa...the elder son...who else but Femi Kuti. Where would you hear such messages in music? Womadelaide 2014...that's where. And what do these artists...these songsters in culture have in common? Their music is embraced with power...with the maxim: "Music is our Weapon of Choice." ... read more

It was our free day and so I walked alone yesterday's route. I walked through Botanic Garden. I wanted to visit amazonas house but it was still closed. I walked to town and made souvenier shopping. I took tram to beach, but after one metro station I had to leave the tram because you can just pay with coins and I hadn't enaugh coins in my pocket. In town there are free metro stations but out to beach you have to pay. So I left tram and changed my money. The ticket was valid for two hours journey took half an hour so I had one hour at beach. It was a nice beach with a big jetty for pedestrians. Back in town I walked to river, crossed river and just wandered arround. In the evening ... read more

Greetings from aquatic Adelaide! Most rain for 5 years........and we are lucky enough to be here to see it! Took a city sights coach tour this morning........slow going because of the traffic..........because of the rain. got a close-up of tha Adelaide Oval, where they play...........Aussie Rules football......as well. Went to Haigh's chocolate factory - got a few samples and that cheered us up! Visited Glenelg, at the seaside but didn't get out as itwas too wet. The trip finished about lunchtime and we went for a wander round the Central Market - amazing array of produce. On the way back to the hotel we visited the St.Francis Xavier cathedral. Had lunch on the balcony and it's starting to brighten up...........still warm, 23 degrees or so. Start our trip down the Great Ocean Road tomorrow. No more ... read more

Not a lot to report today............had breakfast and took the shuttle bus to Alice airport And caught the plane to Adelaide..........where it was tipping it down! Still 21 degrees though. Rae went to the gym (having withdrawal symptoms) and I went for riverside run, to be welcomed by sirens announcing that some of the bridges were in danger of being submerged. Still quite pleasant and I saw quite a bit of bird life. Had a nice Italian meal at Il Parlamento. Promised not to mention the cricket.......but had to take a pic of the Adelaide Oval which we overlook from our balcony. Still, the English had their day on the rugby pitch last weekend! City tour tomorrow morning.... read more

Tuesday 21st We leave Hawker early under clear blue skies and the temperature rising every minute. About 45 mins later we arrive at Wilpena Pound Resort within the Flinders Ranges NP. It’s very hot by then ! 37+ We book the reception shuttle bus to take us into the park so that we can walk the last few K’s to the Hills Homestead and Wangara Look Out. Wilpena Pound is a circle of mountains concealing a bowl of trees and bush. The Homestead turns out to be a small single storey house used in the 1890’s by a family who ran a sheep station within the Pound. It was a very hard life. We continue to the Look Out and it’s hot work climbing to the top but we are rewarded with views of the mountains ... read more
