Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

26th November 2008 - WAKEY, ADELAIDE & SUNSET STRIP!!! We left Port Augusta and set off on the road to Adelaide fairly early. The roads were getting busier as we got nearer the city and you could see the sea!!! So excited at that point!!! We swapped drivers in none other than Port Wakefield....not the shakey we all know and love but cool all the same!! I then drove to Gelnelg and managed to avoid colliding with all the cars weaving in and out as we drove on the outskirts of the city!! My feet were in real shock though.....clutch control [View Full Entry]

25/11/08 = Port Augusta and the Ants Woke up and got our 2 minute shower. Really was a 2 minute shower and had to pay 20cents for it - apparently the water really sparse/expensive in Coober Pedy. Before left town, went to see the underground church, which was really cool. Very old style, with exposed walls and a lectern and big crosses made out of wood. Shame that the chairs were just normal plastic chairs; didn't really look right. After that, we did the usual re-stocking of ice and petrol and set off for Port Augusta. I drove first part to [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Adelaide and stayed here for 2nights, met two English couples from Enfield and Berkshire, had a good night chatting and playing cards and drinking our box wine (classy) with them. The 2nd day we headed to the city by public bus, went to the main shopping street, bought some new tops (oh i miss shopping and primark!), we walked to Adelaide Cricket Ground, walked along park of the Torren River, which runs through the city, such a lovely day. We left in the day morning for a little town(village) called Port Elliott, but on the way we stopped [View Full Entry]

After leaving Phillip Island we decided to stay in St Kilda a few minutes away from Melbourne city centre. Nick thought he’d seen a hostel last time we’d gone to St Kilda so we walked down the street from the tram stop only to find he was mistaken. It took ages to find a hostel as it was the week of the Melbourne cup and they were all full. We eventually found one for $40 a night, which was really cheap. As always really cheap meant it wasn’t the cleanest of places and was in the dodgy area of town. Whilst [View Full Entry]

As part of my birthday weekend Penny organized for us to stay in a caravan in Moontah for a night so that Nick and I got to see some more of the area. We had planned to leave Adelaide relatively early to make the most of the day but Penny and I went to the market to get some supplies which took longer than expected and we ended up leaving around 12o’clock. The drive was really nice with loads of flat wheat fields going off into the distance. At one point there were some massive metal statues on the side of [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Adelaide on Monday afternoon, staying with friends of ours who had lived in Darwin a few years ago (Matt, Carrie, Tahlia, Kianna and Ella). We had met up with them just a few days before we had started this trip when they were doing a similar trip around WA to Darwin and down through the Centre - see Heading-West-2008 . They had passed on to us some travelling information as well as their copy of the WA Road and Tracks and Camping WA books, so it was good being able to return them and swap favourite locations. We [View Full Entry]

Hi there. I decided to start a travel blog today. The day of departure is fast approaching, yet I feel there is so much still to be planned. I have my bag, it cost $170 ($230 after sale). I also have a few clothes that are supposedly tailored to the colder climate, but when I tried them in 15 degree weather a few weeks ago I felt cold ... For those who don't know I'm travelling with Ben Collie to the United States and Canada between January 16 and February 25 of 2009. We booked the tickets back in late August [View Full Entry]

After a night sitting watching nearly one hundred little penguins swim out of the sea and waddle up to their nests (a nightly occurence called the Penguin Parade) we started our journey along the Great Ocean Road (the coastline between Melbourne and Adelaide). Day 1 After a final 'stop n chat' with Gayle in Melbourne's Federation Square we took a very long walk to pick up our rental campervan (like a normal van but with a bed in it) which Bec has the pleasure of driving since I was banned after stealing Patrick Stewart's Aston Martin and taking it on a [View Full Entry]
