Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I am now in Australia!! And despite all the romantic notions of coming Down Under for Christmas the summer weather hasn't joined me yet and its been raining and not too warm since i arrived! In fact the day that i arrived in Melbourne they're 4 month long drought broke and it tipped it down! But i haven't let that put me off and luckily being a geographer i always carry a waterproof jacket where ever i go... Melbourne was a great city, but due to the torrential rain while i was there i don't really have any photos to show [View Full Entry]

Today we had a bit of a lie-in... we both needed it!!! Chris went and got his hair cut, yipee! We then went down to Port Adelaide. We drove around as this is the industrial part of the City. We then went on to Semphore where the beaches are, had a cofee and cake and a walk along the sea front. We then drove though Mawson Lakes, a new development, where Wilf and Sheila would like to move too and also i think they are trying to convince us to move out here!!!! Today we caught our flight to Adelaide with Sandra, one of the girls from the tour. We met Wilf and Sheila at the airport, Chris's Aunt and Uncle. They drove us around the city centre so we could get our bearings. We stopped at the war memorial where Chris's Uncle's ashes are overlooking the Oval and had a coffee in one of the nearby cafes. We then went back to their house which is in North Adelaide in the hills and got to meet his cousin Jan, Adam and the kids Morgan and Cooper. [View Full Entry]

After a couple of days rest in Glenelg near Adelaide (this travelling is tiring business!) we picked up our next camper and embarked on to the Great Ocean Road (GOR). To join up with the GOR we travelled through the Grampian region (Geriwerd to the Koories, the Aboringal people of that area) with its strilking mountains. We then hit the GOR taking in the numerous scenic stops along the way ending that leg in Melbourne before setting off along the princes highway to Sydney. [View Full Entry]

What's this I keep hearing about warm climbs and perfect weather? It's been rain for THREE DAYS and we drove from Uluru to Adelaide! Do you even know how far apart they are! Very, very, very far apart. Through a desert. And it's still raining. Australian skies are massive and they're still full of clouds, horizon to horizon. Still, I feel almost at home. It's certainly an improvement on the humid heat we got in Darwin on the first day. Am jealous of the snow, but would not change places. Lucky Lydia getting a white xmas (ish) when she's so young. Nord d"Adelaide
Nord d"Adelaide
