Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

The Bride and Groom
On the Balcony at the Hackney Hotel
The big day has come and gone but it was everything we hoped it would be and more. We had glorious weather all day and the gardens and the reception at the Hackney Hotel was great. We have attached some photos but we have plenty more to come of the ceremony in the Botanical Gardens so we will post more as we get chance to download them. Family and friends all very kindly pitched in and booked us a hotel room at the Grand Hotel, Glenelg, Adelaide for the night. The Hotel was beautiful and as the name suggests very grand. We have had a traditional Aussie Christmas today. We left the hotel and had breakfast in a cafe on Jetty Road in Glenelg and then enjoyed a walk on the beach and a paddle in the water of the St Vincent Gulf, before heading back to Ade's Sister's for the traditional Aussie Christmas Lunch with friends and family. Santa also made a surprise visit for the Kids and gave out all the presents to everyone. Even though we are the other side of the world - christmas still remains the same in terms of eating and drinking far too much at [View Full Entry]

Our cabin
Our cabin
This was our room for the night - it was actually quite comfortable once we got settled in!
Entry by Rich Friday 19/12/08 After a relatively good night's sleep I woke with the train at a standstill in the small town of Port Augusta. This was our last scheduled stop before reaching Adelaide and we had about six more hours of the journey left. We had a light breakfast and watched the South Australia landscape going by. The Ghan had a couple of brief stops to allow freight trains travelling in the opposite direction to pass. We counted the trailers passing on one train and it had over 100. This would have made the freight train well over a [View Full Entry]

Up early today to meet Adam and the kids to catch a bus into town. We are all going to the SA Museum for the morning. It is a really nice museum ( free entry ) with animals, aboriginal history ( really interesting ), a discovary area, a precious stone area and an egyptian room. Spent a couple of hours walking around. After lunch Chris and i went back into town centre to finish off our Xmas shopping and also book our train tickets to Melbourne. We then met back up with Adam and the kids to catch the bus back [View Full Entry]

Christmas Decorations along Shopping Area
After finishing off a few wedding arrangements this morning we headed into Adelaide City to buy a few Christmas things and have a coffee. The City is decorated nice for Christmas especially the big Santa on the front of the Mall. Although it does seem a little bizarre seeing this all in the hot sunshine. The shopping areas were getting busy so we didn't stick around too long and decided to head to Mount Lofty for lunch. There is a great view of Adelaide and the suburbs from Mount Lofty and they also do a mean hot baguette! Tomorrow is the [View Full Entry]

We have finally made it to Adelaide after just a few flights . . . 12 hours to Singapore where we had a 25 minute stop while they refuelled and cleaned the plane and then 6 hours 30 minutes from Singapore to Melbourne, which brought us to the final flight of our journey to Adelaide, a pleasant 1 hour 5 minute away!! So with stops in between we had been on the go for over 21 hours. We had a lovely welcome as we arrived off the plane which was a lovely surprise. We have spent the rest of the day [View Full Entry]

Arriving at Adelaide

''I'm getting chocolate aromas"...
...''and I'm getting to the best bit!''
Cape Bridgewater I convinced Mike to go and see some Australian fur seals en route into South Australia so we drove to Cape Bridgewater, home of the seals, about 20km west of Portland. We took the slow Portland to Nelson coastal road to get there and followed signs to the starting point of a 4km, 2 hour return walk. The walk was rated as moderately difficult which was very accurate - it was nearly all uphill to reach the seal viewing platform. It was not a particularly pleasant walk because we were walking in the rain and had to constantly swat [View Full Entry]

Today we went into town for a little Christmas Shopping. We went to Rundle Mall which is the main shopping area of the city, it is pedestrinised only, with lot's of carol singing in the streets and lot's of shopping Malls. We had a wander up the two streets either side, down to the Markets - really busy indoor market area selling all sorts of food... - and around Victoria Square. Just a quiet day in town... We arrived at Perth on time and had to transfer by bus to the international terminal. This wasn’t that easy with large suitcases, bags and other presents bought in South Africa but we joined the queue and waited. Again it appeared that some people were really going to struggle to make their connecting flight. We were quite surprised to find out that the bus ride was a good 15 minutes away. Anyway we caught out plane, but again had no waiting time, and it was late as well. We did arrive on time though and were met by Kerry and Dave [View Full Entry]
