The ride to Mission Beach was actually pretty short compared to what we’d been getting used to. A 4 hour greyhound ride isn’t much, especially when movies are playing in the background. Lol When we arrived in Mission Beach, we grabbed the YHA shuttle and headed out to the hostel. This one wasn’t of the norm because it was about 20 minutes out of town, very unusual compared to their typically great locations. But it did allow for a nice, quiet and isolated setting. It felt like a bit log cabin, minus the logs and wintery feel. Lol The next morning we wanted to take a little nature walk. So we left in the morning and headed down the road. And even further down the road. Eventually we found a convenience store and stopped for a ... read more

And then we drove to........ Let's Go Wildcats, Let's Go Arriving in Perth meant something different was happening in this city, it was where Kirstin was to meet family friends that she had not seen for 26 years!! The arrangements had been made and the day had arrived and with it came the apprehension of not knowing if we would recognise each other, even more worrying would we be able to pick up where we left off 26 years ago? Of course we would! It was great to see everyone and cram in so many years of catching up, not only did we meet the loveliest people, we were welcomed like part of the family. As if anymore were needed we were treated by Stuart to a basketball game, not any old basketball game but the ... read more

Hey! Today we arrived in Mission Beach, 2 hours south of Cairns, on the first leg of our Greyhound bus journey across Oz! Hostel was awful - we had some unwanted visitors (cockroaches and geckos!) walked to Wongaling Beach (not that impressive so we can't remember how to spell the name of it!) Friendly bus driver took us in to the town so we could get something to eat, he suggested several good places however we only made it to one, Coconutz, as it decided to throw it down - our first experience of the Wet Season! Off to Airlie Beach tomorrow which we've heard lots of good things about.... hope all's ok xx... read more

G-Day folks, So after pulling ourselves away from sunny Cairns we decided to head to Mission Beach and to be honest were not sure why!!...........Perhaps it was the attraction of where Rainforest meets beach or perhaps where Man meets Cassowary!!! No it's not a deranged yummy Casserole but a bird the size of a man.....!!! I'm sure you are thinking exactly what I was when I first heard about them..............A dinosaur type bird that swoops down and can pick up a man and fly away!!! BUT it's more like an Emu type bird that can't even fly!!! BORING!!!!!!!!!!! Checked into an excellent Hostel 'Tree House' set in the Rainforest own pool, hammocks that sort of thing..! and our first opportunity to cook our first meal in nearly 9 months!!!!! Nic take it away ............ Nic - ... read more

Hey everyone Just thought i'd update you all on whats going on, firstly work, on my first day at the Elandra the bus i needed to catch to get there drove past without stopping (good start) so Chris (the manager of the hostel) drove me there. I was greeted by a cassowary on the road who was trying her best to not let me pass and when something that can disembowel you doesn't want to let you pass you don't really argue so i had to wait until she went away until i could get to the reception at the Elandra, the receptionist took me to the Chef who was my boss who after spending around 5 minutes telling me how rubbish i was in general and how i wasn't going to be very good at ... read more

The Pacific Ocean and Traveling have a lot in common. A constant flow of wave after wave. After leaving Cairns this morning I am now riding a fresh wave down the coast of Queensland. I am now officially a backpacker again, and have 3 months of solid traveling ahead of me with a lot of cool stuff to see and do, before I arrive back on Scottish soil. Unfortunately doing this much traveling forces you to leave great people and places behind. The past two months in Cairns have been phenomenal; it's a very rare thing to enjoy going to work and working with so many cool people - (ts also rare to get smashed most nights you work). A couple of English girls, Sallyann and Sam have been especially good friends, and our nights out ... read more
