We finished our time in cairns trying out some of the night life and having a traditional lazy english holiday. After boarding the oz experience bus, we headed down the east coast towards mission beach. On the way we made a brief (second time for us but still fun) stop at the babinda boulders and then headed to Johnstone river croc farm in Inisfael. The croc farm was really good we both got to hold a bearded dragon, a python, and a baby croc (which i felt very guilty about eating croc pie infront of). I also held a dingo puppy, had a cuddle with an adult dingo and some sort of parrot. We also got to feed kangaroos and watch some of the crocs being fed. Mission beach is a very quiet place but great ... read more

Hey Sorry again for the lack of updates but i had a lot of problems getting online since i got here and there hasn't really been that much to tell, i'm at mission beach and I’m staying at a hostel called Absolute Backpackers and its fantastic, i think its probably the nicest and most friendly hostel i've stayed at. Within minutes all the staff knew mine and everyone else's name and the whole atmosphere is brilliant. When i arrived at the hostel i asked if they'd keep an ear open for any work and on Thursday a real estate agent asked me if i wanted to lay some turf on a bit of land he was going to sell, it was really hard work and the sun was scorching which made it even harder but it ... read more

Journey to Mission Our second week in the camper began with another visit to a waterfall in the Atherton Tablelands. This time it was the Mungalli Falls towards Innisfail. We had a fairly steep descent to reach the plunge pool, but it was worth it because we could appreciate the magnitude of the drop much better at the bottom. We then continued our journey in the direction of Innisfail and had a brief stop at Crawford's lookout over the Johnstone River. We drove straight through Innisfail, stopping only for food and then reached Mission Beach about 30 minutes later. Mission Beach We checked into a caravan park, a 15 minute walk from Wongaling Beach which lies in-between North and South Mission beaches - the whole stretch is 14km in length. After settling in, we spent the ... read more

I consider buying a vehicle - a minivan with a mattress - but, reading the want ads and notice boards, I find prices are far too high and even motorcycles are too expensive. Many backpackers travel by bus but I choose a rail pass instead as it gives me a little more leg room and I can get up, walk around, go to the dining car when I wish. I begin moving south by heading for Mission Beach, travelling through a broad river valley, past palm trees and sugar cane and banana fields with blue and gryy/silver bags hanging on each tree where the fruit grows. Low hills slope up on either side of the valley, bearded green with rainforest. They run in long ridges beside us, reminding me of the Jura in Switzerland. Although the ... read more

Back on the road and up through the sugar cane and little narrow gauge railways that link the massive farms with the main depots and main lines. Our next stop was Mission Beach in the wet tropics. Another of the World Heritage Areas of Australia and home to the Cassowary, a very large blue bird with a terrifying hard horn, it has been know to de-bowel people! A very small coastal town very chilled out and a perfect place to relax, that is if you want, but it is only a stones through from the town of Tully at the foot of the great Tully River valley. World famous (but you knew that) for its white water rafting. The Tully River is a dam controlled river so always plenty of water to have fun in. We ... read more

After a 4 hour stop off at Darwin we landed in Cairns to beautiful sunshine and 28 degree heat. We had arrived into civilisation! We were picked up from the airport by the hostel we were staying at (Dreamtime Traveller's Rest) which turned out to be a really nice place with a very helpful chap at the helm. It was all a bit surreal to begin with as it had been so long since we'd been in a Western country- we weren't used to normal flushing toilets, sensible driving and even shopping (of the food variety- we loved doing our first lot food shopping!) Once it sunk in however we were loving it. Wasting no time at all - (we shopped around for the best deal) within 3 days we had our very own campervan (Madge) ... read more

We are now out on the coast. A mutual thought between us was that we really do like being near the ocean . MISSION BEACH We wasted no time in getting to a seafood restaurant that night. Very pleasant. Three nights here and that means two days. This area is renowned for its rain. Nearby Tully is the wettest town in the country. It was warm at around 28 deg but often overcast. We liked it a lot. Spoke to Coxy and got the address of his block to have a look at it. He and jan plan to build a house for the winter months in Melbourne. Nice level block close to the sea and 'jungle' at the back. The first day was spent at Paronella Park and Innisfail for some shopping and a look ... read more

I decided to do a separate blog on Paronella Park as we were very impressed with what one man managed to do virtually on his own using local sand and cement and lots of 'scrounged' materials from around the area. Fabio, you would be impressed! Born in a poor family Jose had always dreamed of building his own castle. After moving from Spain to Australia and making money on buying, clearing and selling land, he started Paronella Park in 1912. About 13 acres of amazing planning , hard work and ingenuity. There was even a cave with tiny bats in it. He died in 1948 but his legacy remains in spite of fire, floods. and cyclones. A few photos will help you get a feel for it.... read more

After breakfast and some beach time we headed back into Cairns to have the seatbelt in our van fixed at the Wicked Office as the mechanic had been absent the previous day. From here we headed south to our next port of call - Mission Beach! It was quite a drive and we arrived quite late on in the afternoon. Unfortunately there was nowhere free for us to camp and we had to opt for the next cheapest option. This happened to be a council camp site but it was right on the beach. After securing our possessions and trying to avoid the roaming dogs and kids we enjoyed dinner and drowned our sorrows with some goon! Enough said! ... read more
