Boston is beautiful. We stayed in the fenway area which was a bit of a student type place. It felt strange wearing a coat, hat and gloves after comming from fiji, although Dave loved the cold again. We arrived early in the morning just in time for breakfast, which was great as the American airline didn't feed us and we were starving. The hostel does an all you can eat breakfast of bagels and cereal which means we never went hungry, although we did get sick of the sight of bagels. We didn't really do much on the day we arrived as we were both seriously jet lagged so we found our bearings and got an early night. Our first full day started by a walk around the freedom trail. This takes you around some of ... read more

Robinson Crusoe involved a bit of a strange drive to a very small boat port. Once there we were welcomed with singing and were just in time for lunch. There were only nine other guests on the island and it felt like a little family. The first day there we did an afternoon kayak but we couldn't get all the way around the island as the tide was too low, also my kayak had a leak and by the end of the trip I was going really slowly and couldn't pull it along the beach it was so heavy. After this some dinner guests arrived and there was a big show which included fire walking, hula dancing, knife dancing and fire dancing. the show was amazing, especially the fire dancing. The next day we attempted to ... read more

Feejee Experience (Viti Levu and Beachcomber) Nadi We stayed in a budget hotel in Nadi which was really nice. It had 2 restaurants, 2 pools and even a salon. However the toilets weren’t up to much as there were biting bugs everywhere (including the toilet seat) so we had to use the ones next to the pool. Our first night we went to one of the restaurants that was quite posh but was not very expensive. There was live music playing and you get a flower in your hair. This is worn on the right if you are taken and the left if you are single. After food and drink we went to the theatre room to wind down. The next day we went into town. This was a little bit scary as people follow you ... read more

Our first day back in Wellington we spent at the indoor bouldering wall trying to get back in shape after being lazy in the north island. At night time we went to the theatre to watch Adam Page. This was really different and cool to watch, he played fifteen different musical instruments (one was a sweet potato he drilled into something he could play and another was part of a vacuum he used as a dijeridoo), at one point he was dressed as a sumo wrestler and he had a young lad doing origami while he played. The origami was quite impressive as he made a Yoda which looked exactly like him. We were being filmed too so might be on TV at some point. The next day we headed back up to Auckland on the ... read more

February 26th 2009

On the way to Taupo we stopped off for a short forest walk with some natural tunnels and caves to walk through which was a nice stop. We also stopped to watch some rabbit shearing. This involved the lady tying up an Angora rabbit in a very tortorous looking position and using sheep shears to de-fur it. Towards the end of the trip we stopped at huka falls, these are really good as the water is an amazing blue colour and the waterfall itself is quite impressive. The first night in Taupo we went for a game of mini golf. Kirsty managed to win this by one point and she also got a hole in one on the last hole, winning herself a free round of golf. We then went out to an Irish bar with ... read more

February 23rd 2009

We boarded the kiwi bus which took us to Maun Gawhau (Mt Eden) which gets 360 degree views of Auckland. After taking in the views we headed over the coromandel ranges to cathedral cove. Here we took a nice walk to a beautiful beach before arriving at mercury bay. We arrived late in the afternoon so we had a group meal of all you can eat spagetti bolognese and spent the night in the hostel bar playing pool and cards with people off the kiwi bus. It was a really good night. The next day we were planning on a beach day but due to the bad weather we ended up going to a free art gallery and spending the day playing pool, darts and watching films. The weather cleared up a bit in the afternoon so ... read more

February 17th 2009

On the way to Auckland we stopped off at Matamata where Hobbiton is. We didn't see the set as that costs money and takes too long but we got a picture of the sign and a statue of Gollum. We only stayedin Auckland for one night before heading to Paihia (bay of islands). We didn't have long to look around Auckland so just looked along the main street, but from what we have heard we are not missing much. The first night in Paihia we explored the area and got fish and chips to eat by the sea. After this we got a bottle of wine and then went back to the hostel and spent most of the night playing cards with other hostel guests. The next day we went on a 22 hour cruise around ... read more

February 12th 2009

On the way to rotorua we stopped off at one of the mud pools. These are really cool as they bubble, which is really relaxing to watch, although they smell really eggy. When we arrived in Rotorua we went to the realm of Tane with the kiwi bus. Here we tried some maori chutneys before being taken to our hostels. We then explored the area which included the govenment gardens, the park, the thermal area and the lake. Our first full day we spent at Te Puai which is a large geo-thermal park with mud pools, hot springs, and a really cool geyser which when it gets going is really impressive. We also finally got to see live kiwis which are odd looking birds and because they were in a glass tank we were unable to ... read more

February 8th 2009

Our first night in Taupo we met some people and played tabletennis for most of the night and then had a couple of games of scrabble. The next day Kirsty went for a skydive in the morning whilst I went for a nice safe stroll around lake Taupo. Kirsty's skydive looked really cool when I watched the DVD later. She jumped from 15000 feet and looked really scared until about half way down where she seemed to be enjoying it. After this we went for a stroll to look around the town. This day we had to get up at 4am to catch a 5:30am bus to the Tongariro crossing, one of the top ten single day walks in the world. We got dropped off at about 7am near Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in LOTR) and ... read more

The highlight of Kaikoura was the dolphin swim, it was absolutely amazing. We got 2 swims and there were about 20 dolphins swimming around the group each time. At first it felt a little funny because you had to sort of sing and make noises to get them interested in you. When you had their interest you had to maintain eye contact and swim in circles with them to keep them interested. I managed to do this a couple of times and 1 dolphin stayed with me for ages and only left a couple of times to get a breath before leaving me properly. Kaikoura is a really good place to swim with dolphins as they are Dusky dolphins, which are apparently more sociable and playful than other types of dolphins, they were definately prettier. They ... read more
