So, it’s been a while since my last post… sorry about that. Magnetic Island was absolutely stunning; the weather was perfect and I made a bunch of new friends to hang out with. The first night, we had a pub quiz and we came a very respectable 5th (out of 20 or so). We agreed to rent a couple of cars the following day and explore the island. The next day, not quite as bright and early as we would have liked, we got into these two small cars, which were “topless” i.e. no roofs. It was a fantastic day, whizzing around the island and stopping to see various things. We went on a walk and saw a wild koala. Koalas sleep for something like 22 hours a day, not a bad life hey? We also ... read more

Hellooooo everyone! So this is an update from our time at Mission Beach, and by the title I'm sure you can guess it was an exciting couple of days. We bussed up from Magnetic Island and arrived in Mission Beach about 4 hours later. As a side note, we ate the most delicious pies at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere! Mission Beach is a very small town that is currently putting itself on the map as a tourist destination by offering cheap whitewater rafting and skydiving. It also boasts excellent hostels with high reviews. We chose Scottys and weren't disappointed. On our first night we ate at a proper restaurant, which was a nice treat. There were candles on the table, nice views from the patio, and thankfully $10 pizza specials. Then we ... read more

well what a day !!! i was awake at 5am after being woke by the laughing koogaburras, they make a noise like a laughing chimp ..... extreeeeemly noisy, anyway I was listening to my ipod when there was a blood curding scream in the dorm, a gecko had falled off the wall and landed on a girls head when she was asleep - then it ran over her face !!!! well you can imagine the chaos that ensued !!!! we saw him back on the wall. I was up and out by 6.30am i went for a stroll along the beach after breakfast and then decided to go on an island tour. The guy was really funny, only 3 of us on a yellow truck and he took us all over the island, with lots of ... read more

Day 1: Cairns to Mission Beach via Wooroonooran National Park With 7 days left in Queensland, we hired a campervan to take us all the way to Brisbane in order to see as much as possible of this varied coastline. Our intention was to visit a few of the many national parks, ‘camping’ along the way, and sticking to small sites and towns where possible. Our small van was equipped with the basics; a double bed (which retracts into a bench), water supply, pump sink, portable two burner stove, esky, table and chairs. After stocking up on food and ice, we gathered a few maps and hit the road to start our 1700 kilometre journey. Our first stop was Josephine Falls, a waterfall with natural swimming pools in Wooroonooran National Park (yes, that’s how it is ... read more

Siobhan and Blair arrived into Cairns as I got back from up north, reunited to do the other half of the east coast after we left off at Brisbane back last October. We all bought hop-on hop-off Greyhound bus passes to Brissy and set off on our final Australia journey, the first stop being Mission Beach for our Skydive. It hadn't really dawned on me what we were going to be doing until I'd watched a few of my Cairns room-mates' DVDs from when they did it. Our first night in Mission Beach we met up Stehpania, a girl who I used to work with who's now working at the hostel. There was a real party atmosphere and the drinking games started early, so by midnight we were completely pissed and supposed to be getting up ... read more

After 2/3 hours on the bus, we arrived at Mission Beach in boiling hot sunshine. It had rained on and off while we had been in Cairns (as it is the tropical wet season at the moment in the north of australia) but as nice as it was to be dry, the humidity was just as intense as Asia, with it being so close to the equator still. Our hostel was about 30 metres from the beach and luckily had air-conditioning. We spent the first day just walking and relaxing on the beach and were astounded how empty it was - we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Mission Beach itself was really small, literally just a village by the beach. This was nice as we felt like we were experiencing rural australia a ... read more

MISSION BEACH We arrive into Mission beach and are meet by an older gentleman in a regulation beat up white minibus that reminded us of the one in Bundaberg! He was harping on about being the only one in the village, (hostel, not gay!) as everyone else jumped on the Absolute bus, hmmm not a good sight! We arrive and an older lady took forever to check us in and as we were taking our bags into the room she realised the room had not been cleaned! Hmm! Not hard when you only have 8 rooms to look after in total! The whole place just looked a little grubby, the paint on the floor had been rubbed through a couple of different coloured layers to the concrete and the photos from the website must have been ... read more

Townsville = Dullsville Jan 26th - Jan 28th Now to be fair to Townsville it may be a completely different place when it isn't in the midst of a torrential downpour but we found it to be deserted, tired and rundown looking with a lot of empty shops and a large population of drunks on the street. Our stay coincided with the rains from Cyclone Olga. This was rain unlike we had seen before. It was coming down in sheets and rivers were running down the streets. It was relentless. The waterproofs (last seen back in November at Mount Gambier) were back out and we got drenched from the waist down going to the supermarket to get supplies. We arrived in Townsville on Australia Day and were expecting to join in the festivities but we could ... read more

We woke up nice and refreshed (hostel is lovely) we decided to venture out for some breakfast shocked to see the blue sky and sun. We were told about a cafe on the nearby caravan park that does tasty cheap breakfasts (we were very impressed - so impressed we went back for lunch too). Next we went for a walk not realising til it was too late that we had misplaced our map. We spotted some black cockatoos and even more amazing 2 wild dolphins! Headed back to the hostel and played volleyball and basketball in the pool until it was time to leave. This time heading for Cairns (we can’t believe how fast this journey has arrived). We arrived in Cairns earlier than expected 5.45pm and were picked up by the hostel. Out we go ... read more
