After our shortish coach journey we arrived at Mission Beach. We were greeted by a funny chap called Richard or as Carl likes to refer to him, Dickie. It was a short journey down the road to our hostel where Dickie's, even stranger, wife Anne checked us into our room. Wasn't a lot happening because of the rain so Carl and I smashed a couple of locals at pool, winning 4-0. The following day we woke to find bright sunshine outside! This was fantastic as the beach was less than 100m away. However we did find that it wasn't because of the weather that not much was happening in Mission Beach...it appears that nothing ever happens in Mission Beach. I actually quite liked it but after a day in the sun the others found themselves bored. ... read more

DAY 351 Well, today is a good day, we have been hoping for a day like this since we came into FNQ (Far North Queensland) or maybe just being in the Wet Tropics to see a particular animal in the wilderness that is endangered. Put it this way we have seen enough warning signs, but we have only seen the animal in question in a zoo, but that does not count, it has to be in the wilderness for it to be a proper sighting. The more we stay at these Big 4’s the less I like them, the one in Mission beach, was the usual set up, but the sites were really small and it was a noisy site. The only good thing were that the showers were excellent and we had some power, oh ... read more

We arrived in Mission Beach and booked into The Sanctuary Retreat. A man in a 4 wheel drive came to pick us up fromt he carpack for the drive up through the rainforest to the hotel. Our room was amazing - a green hut suspended in the rainforest which you could almost touch from bed. Having settled in we headed down to our own bit of beach - along a footpath through the trees (very beautiful although the return walk was hard work in the heat). A beautiful sunset made it all worthwhile plus a brilliant dinner on the restaurant balcony overlooking the moonlit sea. The next morning saw us come face to face with a juvenile cassowary - Australia's second biggest bird (a rainforest version of the emu). It was really cool to see one ... read more

29th September 2009 - I'm outta here! Decided to go on 'alittle drive' across the country and see what i can find. Rod and Caroline joined me on my first night at the Golden Hole which was wonderful. A very fitting way to say goodbye to Mission Beach. I will miss the beach. It's been fun. But the time has come to see what else is out there. I will miss Amy & Nic, Rod & Caroline so much, but I carry them with me on my journey! After a funny first night on the road with Rod and Caroline, we said our teary goodbyes at none other than the bakery at Innisfail (which may I add has the best nutty mushroom pies in the world), and parted ways. And so it begins... I headed out ... read more

It’s quite weird sitting typing this as I have got so behind, we are nearly half way through our time in south island, I’m about a month behind with this as we have been moving around so much and it’s too cold to have the window open for the power lead for the computer - what a hard life I hear you say!! Anyway, back to Australia…….. We left Airlie by about 8.30 and after a quick stop at a little town to raid the delicatessen we made our way to the much acclaimed Mission Beach. Loads of people had said how expensive it was so when we turned up and found a cute little village with a wicked campsite right on the beach we were well chuffed. To celebrate we went to the local and ... read more

We tore ourselves away from Rollingstone yesterday morning and continued north - a nice drive through sugar cane country We arrived in the sugar mill town of Tully. We had never been to Tully Gorge so decided that we'd drive the 40 klms west of Tully and have a look, a pretty drive with very healthy looking bananas lining each side of the road. I think in the wet the Tully river is a raging torrent, but at this time it's just a little stream with a few areas of rapids and lots of rocks - all very pretty. We ignored the WARNING, ACHTUNG! sign that is found in all the far northern rivers and walked to the river bank, hoping there really weren't crocodiles around. We found three young local boys who'd just swum in ... read more

Another month has passed, and we're still living in the rainforest. Every 'one more week' seems to turn into "Let's just wait another week" and thus we've delayed our departure more times than I can count. The 50 acres of UNESCO World Heritage rainforest, gorgeous secluded beaches and warm ocean water, are really make leaving difficult. We finally have a leaving date now though, and we'll be heading onwards next week. It's been an incredible few months, full of unique wildlife, great weather, and wonderful people. We've had some amazing experiences here that we will definitely not forget, and it will be hard to leave. We've become close to everyone here, and even the cassowaries feel like members of the family. As for cassowary news, a fair amount has happened in the past month. Since we ... read more

Day 93 - Mission Beach A quick note to wish a Happy Wedding Anniversary to ‘The Welsh’ Dave and Linda Williams. We hope you’ve enjoyed your day and that Dave is still squeezing into my purple suit!!! Another day dawns brightly over the Australian North Queensland coastline, not quite as bright as yesterday but enough to warrant a big grin and to be grateful for being here. We have an important Mission of our own this morning, we need to seek medical advice about Darryl's eye as it's not getting any better infact he thinks it's getting worse. The pharmacist in Mission Beach takes a look but insists we go to the Medical Centre just across the road so we do and after a few minutes of quizzical looks between the two receptionists they agree to ... read more

Day 91 - Mission Beach South When you wake up in a caravan in Australia, the first thing you tend to do is sneak a peak behind the curtains to see what sort of day you are waking up to. That was not necessary this morning because the tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, plop of rain on the roof made it blindingly obvious what was happening outside! Huuummmmph! Never mind. We intended to visit the Mission Beach Monster Market today so prepared to get wet and with that expectation there’s really no point in drying your hair after a shower so we don’t! There’s a post box at reception so about 20 postcards got sent off this morning! Some of them are more timely than others I’m afraid, sorry about that!! Nancy on reception also booked us on ... read more
