So today we are off to Brisbane from where we are going to pick up a car. First time we will be under our own steam. Although only for two nights as we drive down to Byron Bay. So after breakfast, another eggs Benedict but still no picture we were off in a transfer bus to the airport. Unfortunately we were first pick up of 12. Now every trip we have been on, one of the transferees have been late. Every time we have waited till they finally arrived, often clutching a bag from the local supermarket or Subways. Not once have they apologised to the waiting passengers on the bus. Call me a grumpy old woman....... So got to Proserpine airport 5 mins late. On the journey we finally saw our first kangaroo or maybe ... read more

After my good nights sleep I decided to try and make the most of the day and headed to the beach and to try and get a bit of a tan! I still managed to fall asleep on the beach even after sleeping all night in the hostel - I think the overnight coach really took it out of me! I still wanted to try and make an effort getting to know people in the hostel even though I knew I was going to a different hostel the next day so I bought some goon and sat in the kitchen area, I ended up sharing it with Yvonne a Dutch girl I had met earlier who had actually been on the same coach as me. we then decided to head over to Aquarius to meet up ... read more

The coach journey was soooo long (overnight!) and I forgot my subway to eat on the coach and forgot my water.. Had to pay almost $5 for one at a service station! Also I only had my shorts on and the aircon was on so got really cold - had to wear my hoodie on my legs so I put my legs through the arm holes!! I took my blow up pillow with me too and that burst as we were leaving Sydney so the whole coach journey was a disaster! I finally arrived in Byron bay and the weather was really hot, a girl came to pick me up from the bus stop who seemed really nice and told me all the plans for the evening! I thought things were starting to look good until... ... read more

My wife and I took our daughter Jemima to Byron Bay for a week of beautiful sunshine, great food, whale watching, surfing, scuba diving and R&R. To be honest 'we' didn't do any surfing or scuba diving - we really just lazed around, ate lots of great tucker and dreamed of going back here one day to live! Jemima has trained to be a Veterinary Nurse and she would love to live in Byron. I think we to would like to move away from the colder winters in Melbourne and call Byron bay our winter home. I'm sure many of our friends would fly north from Melbourne for a winters holiday. Flights to and from are about $99 one way. What else can you do in Byron Bay?... - Surfing, Learn to Surf; a great beach, ... read more

Sorry I've not blogged in a couple of days.. Have been a bit busy! The overnight bus was as expected, uncomfortable and boring. Managed to get a couple of hours sleep though. Got to Byron Bay at 10am, met a couple of girls my age on the shuttle bus to the hostel. Kim and Natalie. They've been travelling for 14 months so far, travelled India and Thailand, then been working in Melbourne for 9 months. They've got the rest of Oz, new Zealand, India and Thailand (again) to do before they go home. They're lovely and have got me addicted to Aldi... Also met a lady from Brisbane called Kelly. We went for a beer or two and fancy dinner at the restaurant/brewery across from the hostel. Was delicious! She's good company and we're going to ... read more

* We’ve now been home for nearly 10 months and I’ve put off finishing this blog, so for the sake of getting this off my guilty conscience…here is our last week and a half in the Land of Oz. Woke up with my knees still pretty red and swollen, but significantly better than how they looked yesterday (which was to say: angry and purple). And as they were just swollen and not truly painful, I decided today would be another solid day f surfing, jellyfish be damned. Today was a slightly strange day at the beach, as a solid 45% of the ladies in the crowd were topless and a solid 75% of the men had opted to go speedo or less. Lot of skin at Byron Bay is what I’m saying. We had another fantastic ... read more

Byron Bay, a backpackers Mecca just three hours south of Brisbane, into the neighbouring state of New South Wales. It seemed everyone we spoke to, whether they were young or old, hippies or 'square,' only had good things to say about Byron Bay. We were met off the greyhound by our hostel, Cape Byron Lodge. Once again we'd been seduced by offerings of free wifi and pancakes, and of course it helped it was one of the cheaper backpackers in Byron Bay. The hostel was about a 15 minute walk away from all the action so after checking in, we wondered back into town to do some shopping and to see what all the fuss was about. Byron Bay has a remarkable laid back feel to it - this is Australia though so that's nothing new ... read more

After waking to a rather grey morning we drove back to Byron Bay to visit the old lighthouse at Cape Byron. We timed it well for the free tour around the lighthouse. The light was built in 1900 following 85 shipwrecks. The light has clearly been successful as there have been no further wrecks. The light house, like all in Australia, is now automated from Canberra but uses rotating bulbs to prevent call outs from Brisbane for repairs. The light is the brightest in the Southern Hemisphere and uses a fresnel lens floating on a liquid mercury bearing. In the past the mercury when heated by the reflecting light on the prisms, caused the lighthouse keepers to go mad from heavy metal poisoning. There is now a mercury monitor which indicates when the lighthouse is too ... read more

We were quite looking forward to our stay in Byron Bay as we had been told that it’s a really great, laid-back place with great beaches and friendly people. Our journey took just under 3 hours, and we arrived at the Byron Beach Resort at around 12pm, which turned out to be a little early for check-in (we did expect this, but thought it was worth a try just in case!), so we drove into the town for a look around for a couple of hours. Byron has a really strong surfer-vibe, and as we had been told, the people there were indeed very laid back and very friendly! We ate lunch at a place called Hogs Breath Café, which was kind of like an American-style diner. We also bought a couple of beach towels – ... read more
