Today I decided to walk along Byron beach and up to the light house and hopefully see some passing whales and dolphins. I had a leisurely start after all the kerfuffle lady night. Some of my new roomies came back and for whatever reason were either putting stuff in the fridge or on the side and were using a torch when they suddenly screamed out as it appears we had some unwanted guests, cockroaches to be precise. Food had been put in the fridge and left on the side and I don't think it occurred to any of us that we would get cockroaches, so a lesson learned there! They left and said they couldn't sleep there and went to reception. They came back later and one stayed and the other two stayed in a different ... read more

Today was a lazy day as the kayaking was cancelled due to it being too windy, so my plan B was to spend a few hours on the beach. I had a leisurely breakfast and did some more blog writing and uploading of photos as it all takes time lol. I caught the free mini bus into tone and stopped off at the Sunday market. It was a hot sunny day and it was busy but not packed. There were lots of different stalls selling food and drink, craft items clothes and even people fortune telling and tarot reading. In had wander around and bought a new bangle made from an old silver fork. Then I wandered down to the beach and picked a spot and settled down. It was much breezier down on the beach ... read more

Good Morning or evening to those back home, These last few weeks I have been doing something a little different from the norm so I thought I'd take some time out to write about it. Australia had yet another Pommie coming to its fair shores, all the way from Willenhall. My partner in crime Danielle arrived late on Tuesday evening and I felt obliged to meet her at the airport suited and booted to blend in amongst the taxi drivers. After searching for about a minuite she found me amongst the cab drivers holding a sign with her name on it. The next few days were spent showing the tourist around Sydney, taking her to the Iconic sights ( harbour bridge/opera house) the city had to offer and showing her the walking tour that I had ... read more

Just checked my blogs and realised that I didn't post one AFTER my surf lesson! Well dudes, I can tell you that my lesson was amazing and it turns out that, rather surprisingly, I am an excellent surfer!!! It was such a great day and loads of fun, even though it was physically pretty tiring. It started off badly as the instructor didn't show up and so the lady in the surf school had a major freak out - she said it had never happened to her, in 10yrs, and she was literally shaking with panic! Anyway, she offered me a full refund and a free lesson the next day but I was leaving that night so I couldn't take that, so she rang her good friend and asked him to squeeze me into his class ... read more

Here I am again! I am up in Byron Bay now, my last stop before Queensland (I think). You'll all be pleased to hear that I finally found the sun - hurray! Byron Bay is a beach town, based entirely around surfing and water sports, and obviously the beach! Today I went for a long walk up to the lighthouse and stood on the most easterly point in Australia. Then I saw a few whales and an entire pod of dolphins below the cliffs, which was pretty exciting! I found a tiny cafe at the very top of the walkway where I had a scone with jam and cream, just to keep up my english-ness. Then I trekked back again, seeing a big lizard thing and a wallaby on the way! I hired a bike to ... read more

Lunch was a kale salad, mixed with other greens and superfoods. There was the widest selection of tie-died clothing I had ever come by. I nearly got blown away by incense smells, and I've never seen so many indian feathered dream catchers in one place. On the one side was the beach, on the other hippies. Dreadlocks and tattoos rule here. I could be nowhere else but Byron Bay. It was a three day weekend for both me and my travel companion, Bernadette, so we had selected Byron Bay as the destination of choice. A relaxing and chilled out place on the coast, just south of the border with Queensland. It really is a beautiful spot, and I made the most of the sunshine on our first day, walking the coastal walkway up to the lighthouse ... read more

We woke early and decided, as Kingscliff is only one hour away, to ask at the caravan park office if we could delay our departure so we could try whale watching at the Cape Byron Lighthouse again. Luckily, they agreed and we jumped straight in the car and drove there. The roads were less crowded than last night and we managed to get up to the top ($7) car park and were guided to park right next to Ros and Arthur, who had also just arrived! The day was beautiful and sunny with a brisk wind that was a little cool – coats needed when out of the sun. We walked over to the fence and looked out over the clearest, bluest sea you could hope for. The first thing we spotted was a pod of ... read more

The bus arrived in Byron Bay early in the morning so we walked the 10 minutes to our hostel, Backpackers Inn. The hostel appealed to me straight away, it had a large social area, hammocks, volley ball net, swimming pool and you were actually allowed to drink your own alcohol (a huge rarity in Australia)! There was also a small path at the back of the garden which led straight to the beach in less than a minute and the beach was really nice. We finally checked into our room and met two Essex girls called Laura and Amy who both seemed like they had decent banter which is a massive bonus when you have to share a room with people all the time. We sorted our stuff out and then all jumped in the pool ... read more

Queen Mary Day 2 The sun rose over the ocean to start the day. What a sight to behold. While Phillip walked around the deck 4 times, Jennifer made her start to the day. Breakfast was held in the Britannia Restaurant. Jennifer had scrambled eggs and Phillip had a personalised omelette with English bacon. We returned to our room and after a while we both fell asleep for half an hour! Apparently many on board did the same. Had a little wander around the ship finding shops and the library – all of a sudden it was lunchtime! So back to the Brittania Restaurant and instead of sitting by ourselves, we joined a table with a couple from Perth, two sisters, one from Melbourne and the other from Merimbula in NSW. Also at the table were ... read more
