We have booked a beach house in Byron Bay for the weekend for us and Jenni, Steve, Sophia and Alfie (Jenni’s dog). Mike is really looking forward to the weekend as he would like to get to know his little grand daughter and also to catch up with Jenni and Steve. Well you know I said we booked a beach house well that is not quite right as it is around 10 mins by car from the beach - but to be honest it is a nice little place and quite homely. So after we all get to Byron Bay we have a traditional Oz BBQ which was great. Next morning we are up bright and early and off we all trot into Byron Bay. Well all I can say is I love it. You can ... read more

In the morning (10/20/12) we made breakfast and ate it on the balcony overlooking the city! Then we headed off to Byron Bay in NSW, which is about an hour south of Surfer’s. Forrest and Henry rented a car for their semester here and it was sooo nice to get a break from public transportation!! When we got there they let us drive on some side roads to try it out Aussie-style!!! It was really weird to be on the left side of the road and I had no idea how close I was to the sidewalks and people. I just made sure that I was hugging the yellow line to my right and knew that the other side of the car would be fine. Everything was backward too, which made it really confusing. The stick ... read more

After leaving Port Macquarie, we arrived in Byron Bay at about 9, to be met by the hostel staff at the bus stop. The Greyhounds really have been a great way to travel, especially after all our bus experiences in Asia. We were taken to the hostel, where we checked into our slightly strange double room, off the back of an 8 bed dorm. We were greated by a list of rules including the first time we have encountered, "you may not bring your own alcohol on the premises as we have a licenced bar" and that the kitchen and seating area close at 10pm for cleaning, making the only place to go other than your room, the bar! We were also charged a deposit for keys, and had to pay a deposit to get a ... read more

Woke up after a better nights sleep thanks to our bargain pillows and the cooler temperatures. Kayley got chased around the van by some ducks! We left the camp site and drove down the pacific highway, following our trusty satnav, 'ken'. On the way to Byron bay, in Coffs Harbour, we stopped to see the 'Big Banana'. Its a banana plantation with a few small rides. We walked up to the top to see a nice view over the town. We arrived in Byron bay around 3:30pm and found a campsite called Byron bay tourist village. We cooked some lunch and then drove into the town. We drove to the lighthouse and had a walk around. We walked to the most easterly point of mainland Australia. We then went back to the camp site to chill ... read more

So, I'm having an extremely difficult time uploading multiple photos, because of the painfully slow wifi connection here at the hostel. However, I have managed to upload a few photos of our trip so far, though I had to do it one at a time. Hopefully the next place we're at has better wifi. Anyways, Jord and I were out and about Byron Bay yesterday on the bikes that our hostel provided (though they were not the best bikes we could have had) and we were meaning to get to the beach but it's been so chilly here that we decided to pass on that until today. We did pick up some groceries though, and had a great, hostel-cooked meal last night. Mmm, spaghetti. No luck at all so far with jobs! Apparently it's very difficult ... read more

We had a great introduction to Byron Bay, a hippie town near the border of New South Wales and Queensland. It was another beautiful, blue sky day and our driver who collected us from the bus stop kindly drove us around town and to the beach before taking us to our home for the next two nights. We debated getting our heads down as we hadn't really slept the previous night on the coach but decided on a shower to fully revive us instead. Our dorm seemed ok, we were on one bunk of four in a fairly big room, but it smelt of boys and alcohol! We set out and walked through the bush straight onto the beach, although the sand was cold between our toes it was lush and thick and golden. Definitely one ... read more

Geo: -28.6434, 153.612Slept in due to being the only one in the dorm room right now and had an excellent breakfast around the corner. I can definitely feel i am getting closer to the subtropical north. A gorgeous day for a hike. So i took the trail around Cape Byron through the rainforest to the lighthouse and back along Watego Beach. And even saw some whales floating by at Captain Cook Lookout. By the way, the spot was named after Cook's grandfather when the explorer sailed by in the 1770's. Und so ... read more

Geo: -28.6434, 153.6125:30 ALARM!!! ;) A long way to go. At 7AM i left Sydney Central Station with another Greyhound. The buses are more than half empty. So at least there is enough space for everyone. The day progressed rather uneventful as we drove through endless bushlands from beach town to beach town picking up or dropping off travelers. Oh, and i saw my first wild and alive Kangaroo :) After 830 KM or 520 Miles we finally reached Byron Bay at 9PM. Checking in at the Main Backpackers Hostel and opened my well-deserved Australian beer ;)5:30 Weckruf!!!

We arrived at Byron Springs Guesthose tired and warm after our comparatively short 3 hour bus journey from Brisbane. We couldn't get any hostels in the town, so we booked this guesthouse about 20 minutes outside it. We were really impressed with it, it was really bright and luxurious, and we had our own bathroom- something we haven't had in almost 2 months. We dropped our bags, borrowed the free bikes at the guesthouse and cycled down to the town. We locked up the bikes and grabbed a pizza for a snack. Byron Bay seemed to be buzzing, and there were loads of hippies knocking around. Every second person had a surfboard under their arm; even the pizza place was showing a surfing video on a loop. We headed across the street to a travel agency ... read more

With the rain continuing to fall all night (apparently 50mm in total) we were less than enthusiastic for going on the sea kayaking tour we'd booked the day before, so Will went and cancelled it first thing. After repacking our bags and checking out we made a hearty breakfast of porridge before catching the shuttle bus to town with the popcorn we'd pre-made to snack on at the movies. Before heading to the cinema Will bought a cap. Our choice of film to fill the gloomy afternoon was Sacha Barren Cohen's Dictator. Although the film was quiet short it's inappropriate humour made us laugh. As we came out of the cinema we were created by a transformation in weather and blue sky's. On the way back to the beach Will bought a T-shirt and Shushing roll ... read more
