15.1.2012 Michael was hungover all day so we didn't do much. Met up with the girls for the last time as don't think our paths will cross again. We all treated ourselves to a big breakfast, then said our goodbies which was sad. It has been nice to meet up with friendly faces and good friends and we have had fun with them, as Michael gets on with them all really well. The weathers taken a turn for the worse and doesn't look like it will improve for the rest of the week. We found out what bird pooed on Mike and it is called a Bush Turkey. 16.1.2012 Weathers grim again, why is it raining in the middle of Summer in Byron Bay?! RUBBISH! me and Michael did the lighthouse walk to the most easterly ... read more

Hi All!! Once we left Jason, Deanna and Tenaya, we took the greyhound to Byron Bay. As Byron Bay was in New South Wales, we had to add an hour to our clocks and so, by the time we arrived at the hostel, it was quite late. We got settled in our room and went to bed for a very long sleep; until 11am the next day!! We woke up to very stormy weather, with extremely heavy rain every 30mins or so. We needed some shopping and were lucky to get into the shops in between the showers and get our food. We then spent the rest of the afternoon reading in bed, whilst it rained outside. Anton made us a lovely Nasi Goreng for dinner and we had an evening of scrabble and then another ... read more

My final day in Byron Bay and I thought I'd treat myself to breakfast out. Bored of toast in the hostel, so I wandered into town and around the shops. Bought a pressie or two with a 20 dollar note I had in my pocket but couldn't find anywhere where I wanted to eat - I think I was just in an indecisive mood. I knew I needed to get money out to pay for my hostel in Sydney tomorrow so stopped at a cash point on the way back. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! Where's my purse???? Deep breath, look through handbag-with-a-million-pockets again. Nothing. No trace. Heart's thumping - the last time I felt like this I'd lost a similar size/shape little purse aged about 12 on a walk into town to do some shopping for Mum. Then, my ... read more

Today and yesterday have been a real mixed bag of weather. Uninterrupted sunshine leading to hours lazing by our little pool in the hostel, and then glorious sunshine one minute and torrential rain the next, leading to us cowering under our body boards on the beach. Yesterday was the beautiful day - just back to back sun, so hot we spent most of the day in the water. It was hard to believe that today could be any different but different it was - raindrops the size of 50ps pelting us on the beach.... The body boarding was fun - the waves were gentle but it was good fun all the same. Byron is under attack from a million flying ants though at the moment so the sea was like a graveyard for them - made ... read more

I realise that the title of today's blog may have put some of you off. I mean, who wants to hear about The Lighthouse Family, 20 years after they last tortured our ears? The only gig that I've ever been to that I fell asleep in. However do not be put off - there is no subsequent mention of said band throughout this blog...merely references to a lighthouse and to a family... Today started well, with Emma creeping into the dorm at 3.30am after a night out with her mates from London. It started again at 7am when she decided it was time to do her washing, and again at 8am when our alarms finally went off. Today is moving day and we're all off to Byron Bay - Julia, Alan, Emma and I, as well ... read more

Went to the Blue Mountains for a couple of days which was brilliant, the views were amazing, although it wasn't as blue as I'd expected. It was quite an overcast day though. 2 hours on the train from Sydney, and then 7 hours of hiking around the rainforest and cliff edge walks. Was knackered by the end of the day but was definitely worth it. Was quite muddy with difficult paths in places but I got to walk right under some of the waterfalls and see some sights that I wouldn't have seen if I'd stayed on the main paths. At times I didn't see anyone else for an hour. Was a pretty cool experience. I went on the worlds steepest railway, went to the famous Echo Point and the Three Sisters, and walked down the ... read more

This was definitely a nice spot, somewhere i wish I would've stayed for longer, but unfortunately i was counting the days at this stage for my last days in Oz before flying off to the US. So two days it was, to be spent at the Aquarius backpackers, a lovely spot, very friendly and again met some lovely people. Shared with lovely girls from Eastern Europe, Brazil, Sweden and Canada!!! Here in Byrons, the weather was not wet but not boiling either so not really full beach weather. This was naughty in the sense that i ended up spending my days browsing the shops and spending money i should not have been spending! However, saying that, i have some lovely souvenires or pieces should i say from there and i will always remember this place as ... read more

This year I decided to play with the boundaries of normal social conduct, living like a gypsy and travelling around on my bus, Iris. Lord Henry Theraou once said, “I'd rather sit on a pumpkin & have it all to myself, than sit on a crowded velvet cushion.” I guess for me Iris was that pumpkin, although I wasn’t entirely alone as I shared so much of my journey, from near and far with another. It’s with deep gratitude that I realize that I wouldn't change that part now or revise sharing those bohemian memories with lost love as there is too much to be thankful for. While my heart broke deeply this year, I could never be regretful of this journey and all that it entailed, as I realize at best, that my truth of ... read more

So after nearly a day of travelling we finally arrived at our accomodation in Melbourne at around 8.30pm Oz time and it was the worst we had been to yet. The room seemed dirty, the toilet windows were really old and broken and the shower door didnt even lock properly. This was booked through STA!! The kitchen was so busy you couldnt even begin to start cooking in there so clearly we would have to eat out for the whole week. Oh well. Other than the accomodation Melbourne seemed like a nice city straight away. We were staying 10 mins away from the centre in a place called St Kilda which is a small town/village near the beach. There were loads of cafes, restaurants and bars so the actual place we were staying was great. The ... read more
