I'm so happy to be here in Byron Bay. After 8 out of 9 days on the road, driving a minimum of 5hours and maximum of 8hrs a day, I am so excited to be camped in one spot. Iris has a annexe that finally got put up today, called Jimbo (in dedication to my friend Jim, who has single-handedly been the backbone of Iris's renovations and who has taught me so much in the last 12months) and I am so grateful to have the extra space and somewhere to put my chair and drink a beer on the occasional night and toast to my friend Jim. After leaving the spectacular and freezing Jindabyne, I made it to the coast, after another frightful drive down the alpine region, mostly driving in 3rd gear so I didnt ... read more

Not much to say about the bus journey from Sydney to Byron, it was 14 hours long and not that much to see really.  However, Byron, was a different story. Let me just say this now,  Byron Bay is AMAZING, everything about it.  The people, the scenery, the weather, the bars, the live music, everything is 10/10. It would be here that I would be doing my PADI course at Sundive, the dive company which was located right next to a cape Byron YHA, the hostel I was staying in.   I had done some research through and old uni mate who was a dive master in Indonesia to find out where n the east coast of Australia  is the best place to dive.  The common response was Sundive.  The teacher - Liz Sealey was excellent ... read more

Hey everybody! I am in Byron Bay still but not for long, I will be heading up to Brisbane again to look for work! I had been working in Byron Bay for the past few weeks handing out flyers for the Peter Pan travel agency for accommodation (and any tour or activity you can book at the travel agency ) and working nights as a bicycle rickshaw driver. Money from the rickshaw gig wasn’t that great since you work from 6PM to 4AM and have to pay to rent the bike whether you make enough money to cover the rent or not. My best night got me $90 take home but there was another night where I ended up having to pay $10 for the privilege to stay out on the bike for 10 hours. Needless ... read more

After recovering from all the exciitement of Bondi we spent the next day in the city and went to Darling Harbour. This is where we saw the aborigini guy that walks around there for photos. We then had dinner, which was free but gross and then Stacey and I headed to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge for night time pictures! We then went to bed ready for our 5am wake up call! The next day (6th April) we got the morning bus and headed for Newcastle. We spent the day in the town and just chilled in the evening. It was a shame as it kept raining at this stage so we couldnt do much else. The next day the weather wasnt much better but we decided to head out and investigate and compare their ... read more

Byron Bay - one of my favourite towns in Australia - a laid-back, relaxed, environmentally conscious hippie town with various bars with amazing life bands! There are also wonderful beaches and national parks! I visited Nimbin, where all the alternative marihuana smoking old hippies live. I got interesting information about composting toilets (no water needed), solar energy, etc. how much more water is needed for meat production than for vegetarian diet, despite this -the animal industry negatively impacts bio-diversity through habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, the introduction of non-native species and increased competition for food and water! (for more information: Vegetarian network: www.vnv.org.au!) I also got to know "friends of the earth international", which is the world's largest grassroots environmental network, who campaigns on today's most urgent environmental and... read more

The lazy days in paradise are finally coming to a close as we prepare for our 12 hour bus ride to the big city - Sydney. In the past week we've met some amazing girls and guys and had a few more adventures around Byron. A couple of days ago we rented free bikes from the hostel and headed down the highway to the old quarry. When we found our way through the bushes we came upon a huge fresh water hole that resembled a crocodile breeding area - luckily it wasn't. Here we proceeded to plunge off the surrounding cliffs into the dark, warm inviting water. Hillary and I both jumped off the smallest ledge on the first day, though we did watch someone run off the highest jump - no thank you! The next ... read more

Hey from Byron Bay! I’m here 2 days after my awesome road trip from Sydney to Brisbane. Julie and I rented a camper van from Wicked (the cheapest of all the camper van rental companies) for 5 days. We started out in the afternoon on a rainy Monday and fought our way through the huge crowd al trying to get their reserved campers on the road. The staff member serving us was a French guy who looked as if it wasn’t possible for him to be less enthusiastic about his job, but after about an hour’s worth of waiting, paperwork, and more waiting, we got our ride and got out of the depot and onto the road! I’ve only driven through Sydney once in my life and I intend to leave it at that, it’s like ... read more

Greetings from Byron Bay! So after our long day of travel flying from Cairns to Brisbane followed by a bus to Byron Bay we checked in late at the Backpackers Inn - the only hostel on the beach, which was recommended to us by another traveller we met in New Zealand - we've landed in paradise. As soon as we stepped off the bus we were greeted with a free chai tea and pancake convention taking place in a park - they even had maple syrup. Byron Bay is a tiny town just south of Surfer's Paradise that is surrounded by gorgeous beaches and inhabited by the most relaxed crowd. When you walk down the street at night you're bound to hear at least 3 different live musicians playing anywhere from street corners, benches, parks, to ... read more

Mar. 6 – 8 Woke up early and heard what I thought was a chainsaw. I was right. We all watched as a crew of men cut down a tree from the neighbour’s yard that shaded most of Jen and Simon’s backyard. Quite a few birds were very unhappy and I suspect there were a few nests in the tree. Poor Kookaburras. We went downtown and I rented a car for a couple days. Drove Simon to soccer game and then Jenica and I went to Mount Coot-Tha Botanical Gardens. Saw lots of amazing trees, plants and birds. Quite a noisy group of sulphur crested cockatoos – big birds. Quiet night. Up early Sunday morning and drove to Byron Bay – 2 hours south of Brisbane. Our goal – Kayaking with the dolphins. This was the ... read more

On Monday 14 February we watched the movie Eurotrip and then Ryan (an Australian friend of Thuur) drove Eefje, Thuur, Clint (another Dutch friend of Thuur) and me around Newcastle for some sightseeing. We went for a walk to the Wharf, then Ryan drove us around Newcastle Beach, Nobby’s Beach and Bar Beach and we had a late lunch at a place where they had fantastic burgers, called Grill’d. Then we went to Woolworths (supermarket we visit the most in Australia), where we did our grocery shopping. We drove back to campus and Thuur and me played tennis. In the evening we went to a student party where they played sex trivial and after that we went to an afterparty at Abbots (another campus). On Tuesday 15 February we woke up around noon, did some laundry, ... read more
