Ok so you've seen the photo of me wearing a dress already so I better explain myself. One of Tina's friends Erika decided that for her birthday she would have a themed party. Unfortunately for me, and the other guys that went, she chose 'ball dresses'. Or if you look at it from my perspective 'bawl dresses', because I cried when I heard what I had to wear. The day of the party we went to a huge second hand store and picked out our outfits. Taking a selection of dresses into the changing rooms is not my proudest moment. As I sat on the couch at home in my blue outfit, with my legs crossed to conceal my bits, I had visions of turning up at the party and being the only guy in a ... read more

Spent the day in Alaska's state capital - Juneau. The weather hung in around 56 degrees & the rain was coming down fairly consistently in the morning. From the airport, we rented a car ($89 per day + tax -- ouch!) to help get around quickly & efficiently. Our first stop was Medenhall Glacier - as it was nearest the airport. After a quick stop at the Ranger's Station and walking int he rain, we opted for lunch. Downtown area was very small & quaint... very picturesque! Took in a great Fish-n-Chip lunch down at the Wharf Mall. We witnessed the arrival of a HUGE cruise liner coming into port. Our waitress gave us a city map, so we decided to check things out. As I said before, it was small & quaint. I fact, "streets ... read more

Having grown up watching the cartoon "Yogi Bear" in Jellystone. We'd wanted to visit "Yellowstone", the place that Jellystone was based on. The bears were the main attraction for us, with fingers crossed you paid a visit. "Watch out Yogi here we come!!!" There was so much to see in this park, wildlife, fantasic views and an abundance of geothermal features. We'd already seen a lot of thermal activity in New Zealand and we were well impressed. But we were absolutely gob smacked, as to how much there was to see there. (The world's first national park, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the bill to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Located in the northwest corner of Wyoming, Yellowstone is a true American wilderness - 97 percent of the park's 3,400 square miles ... read more

As the title implies, we just took a road trip. Though we didn't traverse ALL of USA, we covered a significant chunk of the beautiful land. Somewhere around 5000 miles actually. We left Tucson and headed west. Our first stop was in Roswell, NM. Though this was definitely not the fastest, most direct route it was definitely gorgeous. We were not expecting New Mexico to look like it did. We were expecting adobe buildings, cacti--you know, like AZ. We were pleasantly surprised by the mountains and trees. Even Roswell wasn't what we expected. It had more of a midwest feel than the southwest. Very cute town. Or is it a city? After we ate lunch in a park and visited the UFO museum we headed out on the road again. Seeing as though we were on ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Barkerville July 19th 2008

We're in Wells now. There isn't any internet access in Barkerville, or cell phones either. Why would there be? The town is in the late 1800's. It's a total hoot. If Ashcroft was like going back to the '60's, Barkerville is really like going back into history. We were able to stay in a bed and breakfast right in the town. Apparently Barkerville is the only historic site in Canada were you can sleep on site. I'm so glad we did it as we felt really immersed in the period. Everyone working there dresses in costume and stays in character the whole time. Some of them even bring their kids along, and Simone and Adrienne spent quite a bit of time playing with girls dressing in "Little House on the Prairie" outfits. In the morning you ... read more

My original thoughts for this TravelBlog was for me to write about our adventures. Lo and behold, the kids are enjoying having a laptop in the car and have started their own journals. Since they are writing about our entire trip, I'll let them continue and upload the trip from their point of view. Today we started at 9:00a. So far we have had an awesome trip. We’ve seen the shell shape gas station, Mayberry, and a BUNCH of cool cars and Kermit's Hot Dogs. We have a lot of pictures already. We have 20 pictures. There is a picture of a ford econoline, and one of April in front of the Welcome to Virginia sign. We went to the Mystery hole oooooooooooh I’m a ghoooost! HAHAHAHA When you got down there the room was slanted. ... read more

Jack’s Birthday We awoke gradually - surprisingly , Jack last. Once he was reminded that today was his birthday, we spent the next hour opening prezzies and cards and preparing for the day’s adventures. The first obstacle was breakfast: the option chosen was (of course) our final visit to Lori’s diner, where we all decided to go for the ‘tall stack’ (three) buttermilk pancakes that set us up for most of the day. Cable car For the first part of the day, Jack wanted to catch one of the traditional cable cars up and down Powell street to Fisherman’s Wharf (where we were to catch the Alcatraz ferry), so we wandered down to the end of the queue and waited there for around three quarters of an hour whilst cable cars passed to and fro, being ... read more

We made it!! We got here at about 2:00 on Saturday. It is absolutely amazing. Our campground is very nice, with a view of the mountains right from our site. We've had some trouble with our internet connection, so we're a little behind posting. We are about 3 miles from the West enterance to Glacier National Park. We went to the park for a quick hike around McDonald Lake, which was beautiful. The weather is perfect so far... in the 80s during the day with no humidity. Nothing but blue skies. ... read more

Twenty six days away from the big move and nothing seems to be any different. Its only natural for me to take each day as if I were never leaving, then quietly slip out the back door and step into Central America. I can't make any big speeches or last testaments and I only see fit to save the goodbyes for close loved ones. The truth is that many of my friends wont know where I am until I am there and they receive an invite to this blog. So right now I am just taking it all in, making sure I fully appreciate South Wales for what it is. Trying to spend time with a few people before I leave. Swimming in the pond as often as possible. At this point I am unsure of ... read more
