15th July This will be the last entry until we get back to Guelph very early on Friday morning as we will be travelling all day tomorrow to catch the plane in Seattle. The day started well as I got all the laundry done and Amy got her her run before we set off to Whistler. What we had not realised was the road over the mountains was very windy and narrow so took a lot longer than we had anticipated. After a brief stop in Cache Creek (not a memorable place) and at Pemberton (up and coming due to the Winter Olympics in 2010), we arrived in Whistler at 4.00 pm. Amy was too late for a half day mountain biking which looked lethal down a hairy course and hired a bike instead for a ... read more

We stayed at Grand Island, NE. Sunday night and drove on to Columbia, MO. last night. We are heading to Chattanooga, TN. tomorrow night to stay with Mom and Dad for a night. My sister, Beth, is shopping for a new motorcycle and I am going with her tomorrow or Thursday to look at bikes. We plan to get home Thursday night. Donna and I miss the open spaces and big sky and feel cramped by the crowds, heavy traffic, and tall trees growing so close to the road. (Have I said that we will make this trip again?) Our trip is essentially over; the only thing left now is to get back home and unpack and clean our gear. Soon we will put our memories together and revise and publish this BLOG as a book. ... read more

Well, it has been a couple of days since I wrote anything in here! In that period of time we have managed to cross several states...Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, and are now in Louisville, Kentucky. On our way out of La Junta, we visited Bent's Fort just outside the town. Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840’s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. We stuck around and had an interesting two hour tour of the fort. The interesting part was that it was not a military fort but a private entrepreneur's place of business. At the time it was in its heyday (mid 1800s), it was 600 miles from the nearest town ... read more

Day 5 After breakfast, Brian kicked my ass at Gin for awhile. It was a continuation of him kicking my ass at Cribbage. I thought sure I couuld beat him at my favorite game, but no luck. I'm into him for like 12.70 now (10 cents a point). Bob said if we gambled on the train, we had to give him half. But, we gave him a nice tip instead. You couldn't have asked for a better car attendent. He'd been a railroad man for 35 years. When Clinton did his train tour, Bob was on the car with the Clintons. He said there were two other "dummy trains" and helicopter gun ships flying above. Reminded me of the gunboats I've seen at Kennebunkport near the Bush estate when we went whale watching out of there. ... read more

Hey hey! We left the story in Dawson City. Now we are in Inuvik, Northwest Territories where the only way to get here from Dawson is...THE DEMPSTER HIGHWAY....that's right: A one way road, 750 kilometers of gravel and mud and pot holes! And oh yes, let us not forget the unforgettable: MOSQUITOS. In addition to the challenges, we saw some unbelievable views. Beautiful mountains, tundra, and boreal forests and wildlife accompanied us on the way. We hope that our return trip brings more sunshine so we can see even more! (we hit a lot of rain along the way). Our first stop on the Dempster was Tombstone Territorial Park where tundra meets mountains. We did some very picturesque walks to the frozen ice sheets on the North Klondike River and some guided walks with very knowledgeable ... read more

Toronto was the only big city in America and Canada we visited on our trip. We managed to navigate a spaghetti of highways and road works to the city centre to find our hotel. Bette (Dave’s Aunt ) was there to meet us with a warm welcome and a large basket of goodies including the makings of a fine G&T. It was great to have a shower and sleep in a bed and we had some fine meals too! Thanks to Bette and to Jim and May Strasman for making our stay very enjoyable. Our original idea was to drop the car off in Buffalo after visiting Toronto and get a bus to JFK for our flight home. Having got to Toronto with time to spare, we could feel the pull of the Atlantic (we hadn’t ... read more

(Just incase you haven't read my last blog - I am actually home now and catching up on my last blog...) I was soooo jetlagged on arrival in New York; I guess having been on a 10-hour flight from Fiji to LA, spent 3 hours at LA airport, then spent another 5 hours on a flight from LA to NYC qualified me for that, but it didn't make it any better! I arrived at JFK at 12.30am on July 2nd (having already 'enjoyed' two July 1sts) and promptly called a shuttle bus, which took 45 minutes to appear and then about an hour and half to take me to my hostel which was on West 103rd Street, right up near Central Park. It probably wasn't the best idea for me to get over my jetlag by ... read more
