I've just returned home from Malaysia and thought I'd write about it here. Some of the blogs I read here were very helpful in planning my trip, so I thought I'd share some of my experiences with others.

....we got a reservation on the ferry. We had to get to the ferry terminal by 5! am, and believe it or not we made it. Unfortunately, the day is cloudy and overcast so we can't see much of the scenery. We can see the trees along the shoreline, and occasionally the clouds will part enough to hint and more spectacular views behind, but that's about it. This has been the only cloudy day of the trip so far, but it is really making for a dull trip. Foolishly, we were not prepared for this weather and we ended up buying extra sweatshirts in 100 Mile House. The weather has been much cooler than I expected on the whole trip, even though it was sunny, and now with the rain and the ocean breeze it is ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Barkerville July 19th 2008

We're in Wells now. There isn't any internet access in Barkerville, or cell phones either. Why would there be? The town is in the late 1800's. It's a total hoot. If Ashcroft was like going back to the '60's, Barkerville is really like going back into history. We were able to stay in a bed and breakfast right in the town. Apparently Barkerville is the only historic site in Canada were you can sleep on site. I'm so glad we did it as we felt really immersed in the period. Everyone working there dresses in costume and stays in character the whole time. Some of them even bring their kids along, and Simone and Adrienne spent quite a bit of time playing with girls dressing in "Little House on the Prairie" outfits. In the morning you ... read more

We're actually in 108 Mile House, which is, you guessed it 8 miles along the road from 100 Mile House. 100 miles from where though? I think it is Lillooet which is mile 0 of the Cariboo gold rush trail. (Okay, I'm actually finishing this from Vancouver. I never got back to finish it during the trip.) This is the first stop in a road trip around the province with my two daughters, ages 9 and 7 and my (adult) cousin. We'll also be stopping in the historic gold rush town of Barkerville and then heading to Prince Rupert to catch the ferry to Port Hardy. The ferry ride is 15 hours long and goes through part of the inside passage just like the expensive Alaska cruise ships. You supposedly need a reservation to catch the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur January 1st 2008

We left Canada in 2007 and landed in KL on January 1 2008. Somewhere over an ocean the new year arrived with no fanfare or celebrating as most of the occupants of the plane were blissfully (or should that be fitfully!) sleeping. Accompanying me on this adventure were my parents, my husband and my two daughters who are six and nine years old. I'm took my kids to Malaysia to experience their heritage. This is odd as no one in our family is from Malaysia nor have they ever lived there. The closest would be the 8 months my dad spent in Singapore when he was in the air force. My family is from Sri Lanka, and I would dearly love to take my kids there. I'd like to go there myself as the only time ... read more
