Happy Birthday, Doug! Surprise, we are going to Vegas!!!! Doug's 45th birthday arrived and little did he know that we would be on a plane heading for Las Vegas that very evening! I had made all of the arrangements and packed our bags. All that remained was to leave the house at 5pm. I had set a few clues out along the way and I was anxious to see if Doug picked up on them. When he got into my car, I had the satelitte radio set on the weather channel for Detroit/Las Vegas. He noticed.............then I have him a box to open with an airplane on the front...as he was opening it the CD playing switched over to the next track...............Faith Hill started singing "Hey Baby, Let's go to Vegas....." as he opened the box ... read more

I've expanded my vobaulary quite a bit these past 2 months. Not to mention picking up some strange accents. Proudly, mine was deemed - indetectable - until I bust out about coffee, or talking, or walking...or my declination of my favorite 4-letter word... 1) draft previously: visions of drunk frat boys dance in my head currently: any animal used as muscle, to move goods or till land 2) skirt previously: article used to capitalize on female powers currently: to pound out any large, dirty debris from a fleece after it’s shorn 3) quarters previously: small coins useful for parking and payphones currently: division of udder 4) flemming previously: last name of friend currently: the upward folding of a goat’s lips when it senses another goat in heat 5) vent previously: to complain about life’s layers of ... read more

We woke as normal and packed the trailer ready for our relatively short trip to a place called Lake Powell. We first stopped at a small Navajo market which was located just off the side of the road but in the middle of nowhere. We looked through the small stores full of hand made weapons and jewelry. I ended up buying a wristband made from dried seeds, I also was looking for something to send home but most of it was quite delicate so I didn’t bother. We got back into the van and continued on. Our next stop was another lookout point which overlooked a windy canyon with a windy river at the bottom, it was another awesome view. We took some photos then headed back to the van and on our way. We soon ... read more

We only have one week off work, so it's time to head towards home.... The valley of the Pecos river, as it flows out of the Sangre De Christo Mountains is one of the most beautiful and special places I have ever been. It's not the kind of spectacular beauty, like the Grand Canyon or Rocky Mountains, but a subtle magical play of light and colors. We come here often as we can. Comanches and Apaches have traveled, camped & hunted here & left flint arrowheads and other artifacts. Other ancients before them. At present it is a center of New Mexico Hispanic culture. One decends from the high dry Juniper Country into a fertile and watered valley. Buildings are made of adobe. Every bend in the river reveals new beauty. Fields are narrow, divided by ... read more

Submitted by: Onaxthiel: It has been a series of “driving days” for us as of late, so naturally Obfuscator doesn't want to type anything. So you are stuck with me for now. Leaving Washington Island in high winds and rain isn't quite a harrowing experience, but it isn't to far off either. The ferries have a rather shallow draft, a blunt bow and a fairly flat bottom, so banging through swells and sprays for 45 minutes is kinda cool. Every downward trip on a wave would result in a large torrent of water crashing down on the automobiles parked at the front of the deck. We were three decks up, and still getting some of that spray. Combined with the rain, this would have made for an awful day if it had been just a few ... read more

Well, here I am at JFK looking out over the tarmac with an hour to go before I fly home. I'm handwriting, so by the time I type it up I'll be back in Birmingham which is a very surreal idea right now. Internet access in New York for those without wi-fi laptops proved trickier than I would have expected so it's back to trusty pen and paper. Just as an aside, not to be biased or anything, but the airports here are lame compared to the UK and the security is nowhere near as tight as I would have expected. My trip to Yosemite was a great success (although several weeks too short!). It was good to see what was beyond the city and it didn't take very long before we were pretty much in ... read more

The hardest part about Wednesday was walking our luggage across the street from the hotel to the base; however Sandra and I are troopers and managed it all in one shot, I’m sure it would have been a great sight to see. We got there bright and early. Sandra was concerned because they didn’t have balloons, music, banners and a welcoming committee outside awaiting our arrival, but I informed her that we weren’t going to Disney and then she was ok. Arriving bright and early we were the 3rd and 4th people out of 450 to arrive. This means we sped through our “in-processing” procedure which included a quick little introduction, room assignments, uniforms and steel toe boots, pictures for ID badge, and turning in some paperwork. From 11am until dinner at 5:30pm we had free ... read more

It's a tragedy. Here's a link to an article about this horrible deed. http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071019/NEWS01/710190364/1001/NEWS. We're all morning the loss of Eric and the injury of Annie. Anyone who was ever greeted by their shining, smiling faces on the way to the State Fair (which is pretty much everyone in Iowa) is in mourning. Ok, obviously we aren't really in mourning, but seriously, whoever did this, you should be ashamed of yourselves! Taking out an innocent little bovine and ruining the State Fair experience for thousands of children across the state! Shame on you!... read more

I got my plane ticket yesterday from my recruiter and my visa arrived this afternoon. It's official, I am going to Korea on October 26. I can't believe it. I can't believe that I've been in Kansas City for almost two months. It's gone by way too fast. A few days ago, I kind of freaked out while I was talking to my parents. I guess it just hit me that I was really going to Korea...for a whole year! I started to pack yesterday and got really excited. I got a new camera. It's pretty sweet. My sister, Sharon, came to visit me last weekend. It was suppose to be a surprise, but I ruined it. It was good to see her. I don't think she knows this but I'm going to miss her a ... read more
