After too short of a stay in Kalimpong, we are on to Lava and Kolakham. We hire a jeep to take us there. Any vehicle could make it from Kalimpong to Lava, but the road from Lava to Kolakham is very steep & rough. It is worth it! We are staying in one of 2 guest houses in town. Kolakham is a small village on the edge of the Neora Valley National Park. We arrive just before a storm blows in. The power is out at our Guest House due to the storm. We take this as a clue that we should rest up, from the extremely unnatural act of flying half way around the world. One of the few cash paying jobs in this village is cooking for the guest house. People take turns & ... read more

"Why do you want to go to the Himalayas?" someone asked me. To answer that question, I would first have to know why anyone would NOT want to go to the Himalayas.... We arrive at Kalimpong after a long flight: Kansas City to Abu Dhabi, to Delhi for 10 hour Layover, to Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri in West Bengal. We hire a ride from the Airport to Kalimpong & get let off at the very busy & crowded motor stand. Another taxi offers us a ride to our hotel, but we have been riding so long we decide to try & walk. We head out in what luckily turns out to be the right direction & after a while ask a friendly man directions to the Deki Lodge. "JP Lodge, I am going that way" "No ... read more

There are many beautifull places in this world & we have been fortunate to visit many of them. The little side canyon on the Grand Canyon that contains the homeland of the Havasupai People is beautiful beyond belief. It is a ten mile walk from the parking lot on top to the campground in the canyon. The tribe operates mule pack-trains to the campground. We carried our packs down with us, but opted to use the mule train to carry them to the top for us. About 8 miles down the trail, we passed thru the village of Supai. There is a helecopter service to the village for the residents and for paying visitors. There is a store & a couple of cafes in the village as well. The Canyon was hit by a major flood ... read more

As time aproaches for our return to the states, we return to Guadalajara for a few more days. We stay at the Hostel de Maria in the beautiful, central, old neighborhood of "Barrio de Mexicaltingo". This Neighborhood has beautiful old buildings and fountains that could just as easily be set in Buenos Aires or Havana. It is a magnet for filmmakers, it seems. We watch a documentary being made one evening. It is about the sculptor, Alejandro Colunga. We saw some of his work, the surrealistic chairs in the plaza in front of the Cultural Institute Cabanas. The next evening they are filming a scene for a scary movie, right up the street. The following morning they are filming right in front of our hostel. There is a fountain there, & the secne involves a street ... read more

During our travels in west/central Mexico we take the oppertunity to vist some of the ancient pyramids in the area. In Colima, we visit "La Compana" site and are treated to an eruption to the nearby volcano while we are looking around. In Jalisco, about 1 and 1/2 hours outside of Guadalajara we visit Guachimontones site. This is on the south side of the volcano of Tequila. Here we see what are clamed to be the only round ancient pyramids in the world. Le learn about how aguave has been a source of food, fiber for clothing and shelter & source of alcohol for over 2000 years in this region. The nearby obsidian mine by the volcano was also a source of wealth for this community. Guachimontones is easy to get to one the bus, to ... read more

When we decided to visit the beach we wanted to visit a Sea Turtle refuge and to go snorkeling. We got a ride with Rosa from Comala to Tecoman on the day we were going to visit el Tortugario. In Tecuman we hopped on a bus to Armallia where we get a local bus to Cuyutlan. In Cuyutlan we find a taxi to take up the last 3 KMS to el tortugario. Here they collect tortise eggs after they are layed by the sea turtles. They incubate them & on Sundays, they release the babys into the Pacific. We view the turtles that live there and take a short walk on the boardwalk thru the mangrove. Lots of mosquitos there, so we don't stay long. We walk back to Cuyutlan on the black sand beach & ... read more

The day of the Dead is a happy time to remember ancestors and loved ones & to feed their spirits. We spent the eve of the Day of the dead in Comala, in the state of Colima. We stayed at a WONDERFUL inn (or Bed-and-breakfast) called Hostel Casa Blanca. Comals is a beautiful, friendly, little town, & the perfect place to unwind after 2 weeks in the big city. On Sunday morning we decide to walk up the road a ways to a small museum in Nogueras. The climate here is definatly tropical, much warmer & more humid then Guadalajara, but also, we are to find out, cooler than on the coast. Our walk takes us thru a forest of Mango, avacato, bananna, & citrus trees & to a litte "eco-garden" at the cultural center. We ... read more

Staying in the Historic Center of Guadalajara has really been a treat. There is always something going on. The Fiestas Octubre has events going on all over town & I was able to catch some wonderful music acts for free on the Plaza de la Liberation or at the stage set up behind the Teatro Degollado. Also wonderful street musicians. We visited the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for Orozco's Murals in the main chapel. They were stunning and worth the trip there, but we also got to see the Russian Imperial Crown Jewels (Fabrage Eggs & such) which were on display as part of their traveling exibit. Guadalajara has a sentimental soul & a hard side. Watching Mariachi musicians hustle for work from passing cars in front ... read more

When we were approached on the street in Bangkok & asked to be english teachers, that really got me thinking. I knew at the time that I would not have any idea on how to begin to teach english as a foreign language, but I thought I might look into learning. As it turns out there are lots of schools offering certificates for teaching English. I decided to get my feet wet before diving in, so in Feb. 2008 I enrolled in as online class for teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). That class went pretty good, I finished it in Feb. 2009 & felt I learned some good information. The next step in the process was a surpervised teaching practice with real ESL students. That brought me to Guadalajara. One option that a lot ... read more

October 18th 2009

My first day in Guadalajara I found out about the Sunday recre-active event. The main street in town, which most of the time is FULL of traffic, is shut down to all motor vehicles, & open to bicycles, skaters, skateboarders, wheelchairs and walkers. There are volunteers monitoring the traffic at all the intersections and it is a big, citywide cycling party! Loads of fun with other groups sponsering events along the way.... read more
