Dear Families and Friends, I did it again! I finished the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. The weather was spectacular, sunny and cool. We started in downtown San Francisco at Union Square, ran through the financial district to Fisherman's Wharf. Mile 6 to 7 was one mile long of uphill. It was very challenging for me who is used to a flat course! But, when I reached the top, the view of Golden Gate bridge and the pacific ocean appeared in front of me. Wow.......it was stunning. It was breathtaking. It was completely worthwhile to climb that hill. I was going very strong until I reached Lake Merced at about mile 20. I experienced muscle cramps that I never had during my training. I stopped and stretched my legs. I was able to run slowly ... read more

New York City 22 Oct 2007 Left Manchester airport totally crapping myself and wondering what the hell i'd got myself into. Met a woman from NYC on the plane and chatting to her really calmed my nerves. Arrived at JFK airport approx 13:00 NYC time. My nerves soon returned when i stepped foot into jfk and didnt have a clue where to go and how i was supposed to find the shuttle that was organised for me. On the journey to Manhatton i will never forget the view of all the skyscrapers of Manhatton in the distance. Totally awesome! When we arrived in Manhatton i couldnt believe the size of the place the size of the buildings how busy and crazy the place was...totally manic!! I got droped off about 100yards from my hostel on ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We actually saw things on Monday, and so naturally I'm keen on writing its entry. Onaxthiel spends a lot of words bemoaning this arrangement, but since he prefers to be behind the wheel, I can only assume he approves of it. Lake Erie State Park was rather pretty, but aside from the wonder showers, didn't have anything to keep us there for long. The friendly park ranger person waived the park fees for us though, so we didn't pay New York anything for our stay. That's not something I'll complain about. We began the drive toward Buffalo and Niagara Falls, picking a route that took us on back highways to avoid the tollways. On our way, we found Dunkirk, which we were disappointed to find contained not even one memorial to the famous seaborne ... read more

First Day of Travels (Monday 22nd October) On plane on time (10:25am) but hour long delay due to faulty door. Had my own row (2 seats to myself) beacuse the monitor on the adjacent seat wasn't working. Watched the movie Die Hard 4, which was really forgettable. Airline meal was surprising okay. Cottage Pie with Strawberry Cheesecake for dessert. Read a book for a while then had a nap for the rest of the way. Arrived at JFK at about 1.45pm local time, but didn't leave the airport till gone 3 beacuse customs was such a nightmare. The queue seemed to go on forever. Got outside and was ushered onto a mini bus by an Asian guy, who said he'd take me directly to my hotel as he already had someone going there. We were stuffed ... read more

We made it to Gunnison, CO to visit our boy Marty at Western State. Its been a fun weekend. Felt good to cut loose be back in a college atmosphere. The ride here was amazing, as always. We went over Lizard Head Pass right around 10, 500 ft. There was a ton of snow but the roads were dry. We are 1500 some odd miles deep and we're starting to move a lot faster. On monday we head out for Monarch Pass at 11, 300 ft, the highest elevation that we have to cross on the trip. After that its pretty much easy riding through november rain and cornfields of Kansas until we hit the applachians. We plan on powerhousing through the plains but you never know what your up against. I think when we hit ... read more

Well folks, it looks like we're coming home. After hanging out in Longmont for 5 unprecendented nights (and getting to see snow!), we decided to end the trip and return. Winter is closing in on the high country and our plans to visit relatives in Nebraska didn't pan out. Granted, we could have visited the World's Largest Ball of Twine or the World's largest Prairie Dog, but the Barbed Wire Museum was closed for the season. So why wait? We've had a great trip and have accomplished what we set out to do; I think we're ready to come back. Plus Joe and Diane completely spoiled us with drinks, warm beds and chili. Who wants to camp? We expect to be back in Ktown on Wednesday or Thursday of this week, basically a week early. Probably ... read more

The beauty of Alaska compares with that of any place in the world. Below are some pictures from a trip to Anchorage, then the Kenai fjords, and the Denali area (summer 2000). If you go I would highly recommend you taking the train to Seward from Anchorage--incredibly scenic! And then take in the town and some of the trails around town. While there take a day trip on a boat through the fjords on the coast. If possible take the longest day trip possible and sign up for a small boat. The one we took had about 17 people on it and it was great. We saw puffins, humpback whales, murres, a shark, a sea otter, seals, and killer whales (a huge highlight!). Another tip for Anchorage: a great day hike is up Wolverine Peak AND ... read more

Here are two videos from our trip. Well, it's actually one DVD, but the trial version file converter I downloaded will only do five minutes at a time AND cut out the chunk that included Alex and I in the ocean...me giving myself whiplash over the hammerheads whizzing by us. Oh well, at least there's a better visual for the experience. 10/20/2007 Flight from San Jose, Costa Rica to Dallas, Texas - killing time I'd like to have a job (create a job?) that I could travel to other cities, states, and countries to research economic development. Find out what struggling areas have done that has and hasn't worked to make their community boom. Then take that information and make it happen for Jackson. It definitely would be an interesting challenge. How awesome would that be ... read more
