I've been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing places these past years and so I figured I should share a few photos. At some point I would love to go back and add more details in the text . . . just never enough time. Enjoy!

Hawaii is an amazing place that continues to surprise me.<span><span> After just returning from my fourth trip I am already looking forward to my next visit.<span> This was the second trip to Maui for me.<span> I didn’t get many good pictures to share on the first trip so I tried to make up for it this time.<span> We only had about four days this trip but we made the most of it covering nearly the whole island.<span> Flying into Maui is a treat (just like any of the Hawaiian Islands) so make your journey with good light if you get the opportunity.<span> My first trip I moved around the island staying in various locations.<span> This time we stayed put in Kahalui after getting an affordable package deal for our air tickets, hotel, and car.<span> Being in ... read more

Jyvaskyla is a special place to visit for me. I have traveled there several times and continue to go once a year in the Fall. The city presents a great taste of Finnish culture as a medium sized town in central Finland surrounded by beautiful forests. The University of Jyvaskyla is picturesque sitting on the lake with the design of Alvar Aalto evident in many places. The bridge running across the lake is amazing as are the modern white sharp-lined buildings that seem to blend into the trees that surround them. If you want more Aalto you can tour his museum or visit some of the buildings on campus that he helped design. Also, check out the statue of the great Flying Finn Paavo Nurmi just behind the Aalto museum. If you enjoy exercise, like most ... read more

I arrived in Madagascar for an 11-day trip in July (2011) with Zina from Za Tours waiting for me. After taking some money from an ATM we were off. With the conversion rate of 2000 Malagasy Ariary to one U.S. dollar you feel rich getting 400,000 Ariary from the ATM but it’s also hard to find somewhere to put your newfound “brick” of money. Zina and I headed south for about 5½ hours to the Artisan Hotel in Ambositra. The ride through Antananarivo (Tana) was definitely eye opening including all the people on the streets and the huge soccer games going on (a Sunday ritual as I learned). The poverty and poor living conditions of the people is also evident immediately when going through the city. Driving was a bit harrowing as not everyone seems to ... read more

I had the opportunity to visit Vienna for a second time, this time with a couple Austrian friends and we had a great time. In one short weekend we saw and so many things that I think we needed another weekend to recover. I spent about a week here a couple years ago and will also include a few pics and comments from that visit. Ok, so after my friend Max fetched me from the student agency bus at Praterstern we walked through the middle of the city killing time until my other friend, Tamara, got off of work. After seeing some break dancers in Stephansplatz and grabbing some of the new caramel infused Manner wafers we found Tamara and headed to Vapiano's (on Herrengasse) for dinner. This was a great place to grab some affordable ... read more

Off to the jungle we went for a week on the Osa Peninsula (March, 2011)! We flew into San Jose and then went off to Puerto Jimenez the next morning. The journey began with an eight and a half hour bus ride (approx. $12US) leaving from the Mexico Barrio early in the morning. We prepared ourselves for a long, hot, sticky ride but it wasn’t too bad except for a couple times when the bus came to a complete stop (we took the earlier bus so it was probably a bit cooler). The temperatures consistently hovered between about 89 – 92 degrees with heat indexes over 100 during our stay. If you take the bus you might consider picking up your own food/snacks. They do make a couple stops along the way though if you just ... read more

This past summer (2010) I took a long weekend to travel down from Prague to Slovenia. I still continue to conjure up beautiful images of Triglav National Park to this day. I would highly recommend a visit if you are able. I would like to go back and see more of the country one day, but do feel that I saw that best that Slovenia had to offer while I was there. A couple nights I spent in Bled and then another in the capital, Ljubljana. I would recommend a drive through Triglav Park allowing for time to hike. A highlight for me was a long hike down the Soca River where the water was an unbelievable turquoise color. If I had more time I would set off to hike Mount Triglav which is the mountain ... read more

Last summer (2010) we had a chance to take a short trip down the Amalfi Coast. We flew in to Rome from Prague and then took the train down to Naples. After a quick run through the neighborhoods near the train station I can see why Naples is the most crowded city in Europe. I just had time to make a run for pizza at a mom and pop place before we headed further south. I eat pizza everywhere I go and I must say that we much preferred pizza in Rome over the Naples style where it all began. The Naples style is a chewier crust rather than the crisper type in Rome. We certainly didn't get see see all of the Amalfi Coast but there are a few things we could recommend. The roads ... read more

I recently (March/April, 2010) returned from a 7-week stay in New Zealand on the South Island and was located in Sumner, a suburb of Christchurch. I thought I would add a few reflections and pictures for Sumner in addition to those I provided in another blog for my travels on the South Island. The trip was part of my sabbatical from work as a professor and I spent much of my time during the weekdays at the local elementary school called the Sumner School. Sumner is a little like ‘Pleasantville’, an ideal place for family life. I imagine that living in Sumner today is what it was like to live in a suburb somewhere on the coast in California in the 1950’s. The town is very safe with wide roads, sitting as a triangular wedge between ... read more

I just returned from a 7-week stay in New Zealand on the South Island and was located in Sumner, near Christchurch. The natural beauty of the island will awe you. It is surely a land of friendly blokes, fish and chips, and Kiwis sitting around their tv cheering on their favorite rugby team. I realized shortly after being in New Zealand that it would take an extended amount of time to cover the sites, hikes, and activities offered by the South Island. I did not get to the north coast or the glaciers on the west coast nor even the North Island at all . . . so there are reasons to return. Some comments on my travels and other tidbits about Kiwi life are offered below. Beyond the people I met and my work at ... read more

We were able to hit up Kauai for 4 days on our recent visit to Hawaii (Jan. 2010). It was my 2nd trip back to Kauai . . . this time I skipped the one day full Kalalau Trail hike and took it a little easier. We stayed at the retro (and cheap) Kauai Sands hotel in Kapaa. By the time we left there the traffic was backed up for miles because of work on a bridge . . . something that was anticipated to stay that way for quite a while. There is nothing special about Kapaa but it is a centrally located place if you have a limited amount of days and are trying to get around to see most of the island. In our four days we wondered around Hanalei, kayaked on the ... read more
