Magicleaf

This blog simply documents the places I've been. Some far away, some close by, some exotic, some ordinary.
It is about finding extraordinary in the very ordinary life.
It is about finding balance among the chaos of life, love for running and traveling.

Why travel?
For the anticipation
For the curiosity
For the adventure
For getting out of this mundane life
For experiencing new things and new cuisine
For encountering new people and new culture
Then, at the end of each journey to realize home is the sweetest place until the next urge to travel starts to grow in your heart.

Machhu Picchu, the ancient Inca site, improbably balanced on a green-carpeted ridge, imbues a sense of wonder. This sense of wonder and fascination have been growing in my heart for as long as I can remember. We decided not to take the easy, comfortable train ride to Macchu Picchu. Instead, we chose the challenging 4-day Inca trail. This trek has in many ways touched each of our souls. Weeks after we returned, the lush green of cloud forest, the snow capped Andes mountains and the mysterious Inca stone structures continued to be so vivid in my mind. The connection to the nature was so strong! Despite the exceedingly strenuous hike, my body and my mind were so relaxed! Stress and work related neck pain resolved completely! Lower back pain was gone as well. I was totally ... read more

As I rode the bus 4:30 am to the start line of the Big Sur Marathon, I wondered why I am doing this to myself AGAIN. The journey to the Big Sur Marathon was quite long and lonely. Houston marathon ended in January, which gave me a whole 3 months of "unsupported" training. I did as few hill trainings as I possibly could. I dragged every long run on Sat mornings. All these effort just to run at the rugged edge of the western coast. The challenging 26.2 miles course took us from the majestic redwood at Big Sur through the Pacific ocean view to Carmel. The weather was the best I could ask for. Sunny, breezy wind, not too hot, completely opposite from the previous day. The climb up to the hurricane point was daunting. ... read more

Now, this is what I called a real "adventure". Standing on the Green Sand beach, two miles from Ka Lae (South Point) admiring its rare beauty, I can't believe we made it here. Twenty four hours ago, I didn't even know the existence of such thing (green sand beach). See, I am one of those people who just don't have time (and quite lazy) to have a planned itinerary. I devoured the entire book of "Big Island Revealed" during my 8 hour flight to the paradise. "Green Sand Beach is a real gem, literally". "It is a difficult hike to get there, but rewarding"(Trip adviser review) That just provoked my curiosity even more and posted a challenge. I WANT TO SEE IT! Here we go..... without a four-wheel drive, we equipped ourselves with a good pair ... read more

Lava, by definition, molten rock expelled by volcano during eruption. Lava and volcano are definitely not the vocabulary I need to use in my daily life. Growing up in Taiwan, I am quite familiar with "dead" volcano. Now, living in a metropolitan area of Houston, lava and volcano seem so distant, impossible, unimaginable. Until, my trip to Big Island, where I accumulated many many of the "once in a life-time" experiences. Here are the summaries: First time seeing an active volcano: wow....... "it's alive! It's smoking". "It glows at night". First time seeing a lava field: this is when I felt Pele's mystical power to destroy a land and yet to create new land. Quite freaky and scary........ First time seeing lava flow into the ocean: awesome fireworks. It was amazing watching lava shooting into the ... read more

Magic Your Way at Epcot

December 31, 1999, we had a blast at the millennium celebration at Magic Kingdom. Today, the thirty-something me had a blast at Epcot. Vacationing wasn't the purpose of this trip. But, we all agreed that we just had to squeeze out some fun time. The moment you step out your arrival gate at the Orlando International Airport, the allure of Disney is ubiquitous. There is something about Disney that attracts people around the globe, regardless of your ages or skin color. Perhaps, magic, fantasy or a little bit of both? Just think about it. When can you proudly wear the "mouse ears"? (Halloween doesn't count) Where else can you dress your little girls in cute, pink princess outfit and shining tiaras? (Again, Halloween doesn't count) Lastly, where can you, as an adult, legitimately act like children ... read more

It is no doubt that winter in Chicago is punishingly cold. The windchill, like knifes, cut through your skin without any mercy. The lake looks arctic. Snow storms, icy roads....... But, I've always found ways to enjoy winter in Chicago. This year is no exception! Christkindlemarket Christkindlemarket, located at the Daley Plaza, has been a Chicago holiday tradition since 1996. Decorated lavishly with red and green lights, snow flake ornaments, it was hard not to let the giant Christmas tree caught my attention. Daley plaza looks nothing like a usual serious courthouse. An old gentleman, in his black wool scarf, was sitting on the side of Randolph street playing accordion holiday music. Children and adults were waiting in line impatiently to get into the "Sweet Castle" to grab those European candies and chocolates to satisfy the ... read more

I love Chicago. I love window shopping at the Magnificent Miles. I love doing my Sat long runs at the lakefront trails. I love the buildings and the stories behind each one of them. I love the endless summer festivals. I love having four seasons here: Always delighted to see flowers blooming in the Spring, just can't stand the bursts of heat waves in the Summer time, witnessing that beautiful fall colors right outside the house, and always managed to get surprised that the world is covered in the snow when I wake up in some winter mornings. I simply love my home in Chicago. On the contrary, Houston has only two seasons: Hot and Hotter. That's all I know about Houston. I will learn to like Houston. After all, it is where I will call ... read more

Canals, crooked buildings, bikes, sex and the periodic smell of weeds in the air. Amsterdam is truly a unique and diverse city. The Markets I had the most fun in the markets! It was definitely worthwhile to spend sometime walking through Albert Cuypmarkt, Bloemenmarkt and Waterlooplein. At Waterlooplein, I found quite a few interesting things that are not legal in the U.S. There were also charming antiqued Delftware. Bloemenmarkt was filled with colorful flowers and a wide variety of bulbs. Cannabis starter kit can be found here too! Food is always on my major attraction list. We had some more fries with curry ketchup (I love curry ketchup!), herrings with pickles, syrup waffles at Albert Cuypmarkt. (This is how we fulfilled our stomachs without breaking the bank). The Red Light District I walk through it three ... read more
