Hello! Holla! I started writing this blog a few days ago, with recounts of time on the plane and travel details and so much information. But then something amazing happened. So here I was on the way back from getting my social security number in Rutland (45mins from camp). We were traveling in the camp van with the best view of mountains and forests, the most intense heat but a beautiful day. I was playing "The Black Seeds" off my phone to a man called Sergiu from Istanbul, and as I was singing and he was tapping along to the beat I had the greatest epiphany.... The world is an amazing place... it is filled with the most incredible people, incredible kindness and care, but most importantly love is a universal language. Every time I talk ... read more

So, as Apollo Sunshine suggests, today is my day! Why? Because I say so. actual reasoning behind my conclusion After spending almost a week here in Burlington, I've already learned a lot about the program here, GMS, about other people in the program, people in the city, and about myself. Some of the main components of GMS include the following: Nav Night on Monday: this is equivalent to Large Group (for UC Navs) mixed with Leadership. We start out with worship (by some REALLY talented musicians) and had a PSA this week reminding us to take better care of Jeanne Mance (the dorm on UVM's campus in which we are living). After worship and the PSA that was well-crafted by three goofy guys (including 2 team leaders), we moved onto the more familiar aspect of Large ... read more

As the title suggests, today was a day at the beach. I apologize for getting the song stuck in your head if you watched the video...and for your suffering through watching a Nicki Minaj video. This song has been sung more than 3 times daily since I arrived in Burlington, so I suppose it's only fair that the rest of you experience a bit of my stuck-in-the-head misery. on another note Last night was by FAR the most fantastic date night I have ever experienced. Date? I'm dating someone? What's his name? It wasn't an actual awkward one-on-one, let's try to push the relationship another step forward then DTR at the end kind of date. At GMS, character-building is probably the most prominent goal for the summer; to grow more into the character of Christ within ... read more

Finally here! the trip Emily and I left after her final ended Wednesday at 2:00. After running some last-minute errands and grabbing forgotten items, we hit the road out of Cincinnati. She drove the entire distance across Ohio to Cleveland when we ate at a Wendy's, at which we ate basically everything on the menu. I continued the drive through Pennsylvania and into New York, where we drove until 1:00 to get to Utica, where the lovely Red Roof Inn was waiting for us to catch some desperately-needed Z's. Once we cought said Z's, we left the town with the intention of getting to Vermont with the 4 hours we supposedly had left of the trip. As per usual, God's sense of humor was overwhelming (and just fan-stinkin-tasticly timed) as we went 50+ miles in the ... read more

We left Cooperstown, NY heading for Vermont. Since it was mid-week and our niece and husband worked and the girls were in school, we figured we didn't want to get there mid week and interrupt routines, so we took an extra day to travel north. We had traveled Route 20 through NY many times years ago and thought we knew the route fairly well, but we had a never stopped in Sharon Springs. It seemed to be a stop light on the road and that was all. Oh, were we wrong! Anyone who has watched Planet Green or Discovery Channel may have seen he series "The Fabulous Beekman Boys." It's a series about 2 men from New York City--one and advertising exec and former drag queen, the other a doctor and former assistant to Martha Stewart--who ... read more

One of the best kept secrets in New England is the Equinox Resort and Spa located in Manchester Village in Southern Vermont. The resort has a long history dating back to 1769. The original building on site was the Marsh Tavern which is still part of the existing building complex. The Council of Safety headed up by Ethan Allen’s brother met here to raise money for the “Green Mountain Boys” during the American Revolution. It has also hosted four presidents and Mary Todd Lincoln as some of its prestigious guests. The property has changed hands several times over the last two hundred plus years and is now part of the illustrious Starwood Luxury Collection managed by HEI Properties. A major renovation of the property was just completed in November 2011 and the results are spectacular. I ... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132Today's breakfast was the Green Mountain Omelet. This thing was huge and filled with apples, sausage and Cabot cheddar. It was good, but I could not eat it all. The lady said it was 3 eggs and they must be huge eggs. I had plenty of time to take the scenic routes back to Burlington as my plane didn't leave until 5:30. I drove up through Smuggler's Notch again and continued along route 108. I then followed the 15 to the 104 to the 104A to I-89. These country roads were all 2 lane and the speed limit was no higher than 50. Lots a beautiful views of the farmland and mountains. The trees must have been so beautiful the week before. Once I got back to the interstate, I decided to take Hwy ... read more

Geo: 44.4653, -72.685Today was going to be a hiking day. This was important because I started off the day with a crepe that was probably way too fattening and sweet to be a breakfast, but it was. It had caramelized peaches with mascarpone cheese and raspberry syrup. Oh my!It looked to be a rain free day so I set off for the Smugglers Notch State Park. There was a hiking path to a pond that I wanted to take that was supposed to be about 2 hours. The road through Smugglers Notch is only open part of the year and I could see why! Once you get past the gondola area, the road becomes very windy, narrow and lined with giant boulders. It was one of those roads that I don't like to drive on, but ... read more

Fall Colors! You don't really get to experience them living in Texas. Plus Fall begins my favorite time of the year with Halloween and Dia de los Muertos and all manner of Fall Fests! It was only natural that I take a quick trip to the New England area to witness some colors in my life at last. I decided to meet the Great Canadian Himself, Horty for a few days of fun and sightseeing. I landed in Manchester, NH and met Horty then headed to Concord for some sightseeing. We drove around the area looking at colors and eating at small local places. I always prefer local eateries when out and about. We ended up in Maine for some touring of the USS Albacore submarine. Its amazing to see how tight they fit them inside. ... read more

Geo: 44.4653, -72.685Today seemed to be about food. I woke up all refreshed from a long sleep in a comfy bed. For breakfast, I decided to have the Eggs Benedict. The homemade hollandaise sauce was delicious. The breakfast filled me up and I did not think I would need lunch. It was pouring rain when I went to sleep and the sun finally came out just as I was leaving the breakfast room. I was going to spend the day touring the various food places and driving farther east and then north to get back. I stopped at the visitor center in town and the lady there suggested that today might be the better of the two days as there was only a 50% chance of rain and Sunday was a 60% chance. So, with the ... read more
