Lauren Deeley (aka Mer) is quite possibly the most badass woman I know. She climbs up cliffs, jumps out of planes, and rockets down Experts Only trails the first time she straps on a snowboard. On top of all that, she’s also an amazing human being. She’s supportive, encouraging, and generous with her time, her smiles, and her delicious home-cooked meals. She’s been living in Vermont for the past year and a half, but no matter where she is in the world, I’d go out of my way to see her. That’s why I flew to NYC, and that’s why – with barely any time to stretch in between – I boarded a six-hour bus to Vermont afterwards. I had to see this girl. Mer made a good life choice moving to Vermont. It’s an ideal ... read more

D.C. AND VERMONT 2012 When son Bill, Shirley, Will, and Henry embarked on a two-year tour across America in a 42-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer about six months ago, we planned to meet up with them when they arrived in the New England states during fall foliage season. We added a three-day stopover in Washington, D.C. so we could finish the sightseeing for which we didn’t have time during our previous trip to our nation’s capital a few years ago. Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 We arrived at Washington National Airport in the late afternoon and took the Metro to Union Station, from where we taxied to the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill, located only two blocks from our nation’s capitol. After a light supper, we enjoyed the amenities of the hotel and watched Dancing with the ... read more

Our trip is quickly coming to a close. We arrived in Vermont in rain and fog. As we drove past scenic lookouts or even an area that looked like it would have had a nice view we would comment “Yes I bet that is quite a view on a clear day.” Fortunately we did have a day of better weather and got out and about to see some beautiful scenery. We drove one of the “color trails”. Our Vermont map has different ones mapped out, so we chose the one closest to us. We’re camped in the Northeast Kingdom. That just tickles me that we are in a kingdom. Actually we are near Groton Forest which is east of Montpelier. This is a general delivery mail pick up spot for us in Montpelier, so we did ... read more

Arrived in Brattleboro on Amtrak trains from New York, it's the equivalent of a little English market town with the Connecticut river nearby. Very quiet and sleepy just what you need after New York. Walked round the town yesterday they have some great shops here mostly arty. There one shop called Beadnicks which is just amazing whether or not you are interested in making things from beads the display alone is well worth a visit. Every colour you could possibly think of and every shape and size, from minute to huge wooden beads. It's GREAT and the guy in their was really nice. There was another art shop/gallery which had several different artists work. Some great photographs and amazing wood carvings, one of a horses head carved from maple wood and the grain in the wood ... read more

My third good weather day in northern New Hampshire was the day of my departure. The bright side of that coin is that I didn’t have to pull the Pilgrim on rain-slickened roadways. Lancaster NH is located on the shores of the Connecticut River so Vermont is only a bridge away. The short drive to Duxbury Country Store & Campground in Duxbury VT on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 was uneventful although I couldn’t help but think of the events that transpired eleven years earlier and of the monument I had seen in Eastport ME about a month ago. It was dedicated to Angel Juarbe, Jr., the New York City firefighter who won a reality show grand prize and lost his life in the World Trade Center attack a week after the airing of the final episode. ... read more

After leaving camp, the gang decided to spend a couple days in Boston for a little R & R. We saw some old peeps (Zach Gray- whoop!) and some new ones (Ethan Monge), before embarking on our camping journey road trip extravaganza. P.S. Our car, which was supposed to have an empty backseat and a roof rack that contained all of our camping gear, was one of the hottest messes of a car I’ve ever encountered. We mailed some boxes home to alleviate some of the crapola filling the backseat, but Lordy if it wasn’t the most crowded car I’ve seen in a hot minute. Anyhoo, Monday morning, we drove the Silver Bullet out of the city and into the countryside of northern Vermont. Rob wanted to see a friend from the camp from whence he ... read more

Carla: On Friday we pushed the boat out (literal boat and metaphorical one) and spent some cash on a proper 'tour' of Niagara Falls. This meant we didn't have to drive ourselves around and find parking spots for a massive great van all the time. There was also the smooth sales patter from the tour tout who promised us two free ponchos each plus some plastic sandals. How could we say no? I was probably amongst the small minority of people in the world who didn't realise Niagara Falls is two sets of falls – one lot are called the American Falls and the other (Horseshoe Falls) are sometimes called the Canadian Falls. We were worried that we would be banned from the Canadian Falls due to our dodgy passports but it turned out that half ... read more

The last two weeks for me have been a rollercoaster of emotions. major ups and major downs... at times i questioned who i am, and definitly why i am here...the crazy thing was the campers with their incredible hearts were the ones to help me out of my down and lonely times.the campers here have obvious physical and mental requirements and difficulties and they remind me so much of CanTeeners, forever with a smile on thier face no matter how hard life can be. its something i truly respect and admire and fully helps put life into perspective. theres nothing like being tickled to death by my favourite girls tina, bree and mary-pat when im feeling down. and they have the best way with people...always saying "i like you" it just makes you feel so good ... read more

a sweeter song This past weekend was Men's and Women's Weekend. Obviously, I was part of the latter aspect of the weekend. We women traveled about 1 1/2 hours toward Piermont, New Hampshire. Once we reached the "Welcome to New Hampshire" sign, we had one more mile to go before we reached our destination. We stayed in the basement of a church, Piermont Congregational Church. When we arrived, we got settled and were led in worship by the lovely Karen Pankratz and Mallory Bayles. My team leader, Meg, led discussion about the topic which I described in my last blog post: the idea of asking "who" God is when approaching scripture. She explained an example of how to base a quiet time on the question of "who?" It was most easily applicable to Gospel stories in ... read more

Let me clarify before I unfold the past 2 weeks since I last blogged that the title of this entry is only related to the R.E.M. song in a small way. I don't fully understand the symbolism of the video or of the lyrics. I relate this entry only to the title of the song. That being said, update Two weekends ago, June 15-17, my team went to Boston for team weekend. While there, we visited Newbury Street, where we window-shopped and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Trident Bookstore. Eating lunch in a bookstore is probably on the list of most awesome things I've done. We then proceeded to walk to Harvard Square (yes, we walked, not taking the T...great exercise!) and ate lunch in the North End the next day. We stayed with a family ... read more
