Welcome to our travel blog, where we will post photos and journals of our traveling adventures around the world. We have visited all 50 states and 105 countries, and most of those journals and pics are already archived in an old-fashioned, printed volume. I began this more-modern medium of chronicling our travels in January, 2005, but I'll also go back and add earlier trips we found particularly enjoyable. In the photo on the left, we are on a whale-watching excursion in Alaska.

NEW ZEALAND – AUSTRALIA CRUISE January 2 – 16, 2013 Since my trip “down under” twenty-five years ago, I couldn’t wait to return. I wanted Bill to experience their stunning natural beauty and diversity as well, but neither of us wanted to withstand the excruciatingly long plane ride in coach class. So, we saved up until we had 600,000 frequent-flier miles, enough for two round-trip business class tickets, and booked a 12-day cruise with Celebrity Cruise Lines, one of our favorites. Our flights were spread over three legs—Houston to LAX to Sydney to Auckland on United and Air New Zealand—and they were, as expected, luxurious. The food was elegant and plentiful, the on-board entertainment system offered over one hundred program choices, and the seats reclined to a full 180 degrees, which enabled me to get about ... read more

D.C. AND VERMONT 2012 When son Bill, Shirley, Will, and Henry embarked on a two-year tour across America in a 42-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer about six months ago, we planned to meet up with them when they arrived in the New England states during fall foliage season. We added a three-day stopover in Washington, D.C. so we could finish the sightseeing for which we didn’t have time during our previous trip to our nation’s capital a few years ago. Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 We arrived at Washington National Airport in the late afternoon and took the Metro to Union Station, from where we taxied to the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill, located only two blocks from our nation’s capitol. After a light supper, we enjoyed the amenities of the hotel and watched Dancing with the ... read more

BALTIC CRUISE # 2 July/August, 2011 One of our favorite cruises was the 12-day Baltic Cruise that we took several years ago on Royal Caribbean, so when we discovered a shorter, slightly different version of that voyage, we decided to book it. Some of the ports of call that we particularly enjoyed on the earlier cruise (Stockholm, Helsinki, and especially St. Petersburg) were included as well as new ones we had never before visited in Latvia, Poland, and on a Swedish island called Gotland. We flew to Stockholm, Sweden, on Swedish airline SAS because it offered discounted business class seats, and what a pleasant experience it was! Upon being seated, we were offered Champagne and mimosas. The seats were spacious and reclined fully, and the food, which had a Scandinavian flair, was yummy. Soon after taking ... read more

EASTERN CARIBBEAN ON THE EURODAM January, 2011 The Holland America five-star luxury cruise ship Eurodam was our home for a seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruise in early January, 2011. We boarded in Fort Lauderdale mid-afternoon and immediately checked out our deluxe verandah cabin, measuring 200 square feet, which was amply comfortable. The stateroom had a 54-square-foot balcony with a gorgeous (and comfortable) wicker-like pair of armchairs with ottomans and a table just big enough to hold drinks. The cabin’s decor scheme was quite cheery, and, frankly, it was one of the nicest cabins I've seen in cruising. Our dinner in the main dining room was a preview of the delicious menus we anticipated daily during the coming week. There were four choices of appetizers as well as soup and salad. Eight different entrees included a pasta choice, ... read more

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS June 11 - 17, 2010 The Galapagos Islands have for centuries captured the interest of people from all over the globe. Having majored in biology, I have always wanted to witness firsthand the uniqueness of the Galapagos ecosystem. It has been called a naturalist's dream and often described as a "living laboratory of evolution." Until the discovery of the Islands in 1535, the flora and fauna of Galapagos evolved in isolation, producing strange and marvelous island species, as Charles Darwin found when he visited the islands in the 1800s.The isolation and inaccessibility that make these volcanic islands so unique also make it difficult and expensive to visit, however. They straddle the equator in the Pacific about 800 miles west of Ecuador, and only about 145,000 people visit annually. Nonetheless, the effort and money required ... read more

The Eastern Caribbean: 7 Islands in 7 Days May 16 - 22, 2010 Are you looking for a warm paradise island to escape to for awhile? With over 35 unique destinations, the Caribbean provides a wide variety of tropical isles for all kinds of vacationers, especially cruisers like us. We chose this particular cruise on Carnival because of its itinerary: seven islands in seven days, including several to which we had not yet traveled. On Sunday, May 16, we flew to our port of embarkation, San Juan, Puerto Rico, arriving around 8 p.m., and taxied from the airport to the cruise ship terminal. Check-in was quick and easy, as we were among the last guests to arrive before the 11 p.m. departure. The Carnival Victory is a huge ship with a capacity of 3500 passengers, and ... read more

Autumn in New England and the Canadian Maritimes - 2009 There is nothing quite like autumn in New England and the Canadian Maritime provinces with their kaleidoscope of glorious colors, continually changing in a blaze of glory. The Caribbean Princess took us there in grand style on an eight-day cruise out of Brooklyn, stopping at the ports of Halifax, Nova Scotia; Saint John, New Brunswick; Bar Harbor, Maine; Boston, Mass; and Newport, Rhode Island. The Caribbean Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet with a capacity of 3,622 passengers and 1,200 crew members. After arriving in Newark and paying $100 (including tip and tolls) for a cab ride to the dock in Brooklyn, we boarded in early afternoon. We spent several hours familiarizing ourselves with the 960-foot-long ship (the length of a football field ... read more

WASHINGTON, D.C. July 29 - August 4, 2009 It had been over twenty-five years since we spent any time in DC, so we were really looking forward to our trip. However, we never guessed we would enjoy it so immensely and consider it to be one of our favorite vacations. It’s the best city in the world for a “fun education,” and it makes history daily! We flew into Reagan National Airport around 3 p.m. on Wednesday and took the Metro directly to our hotel, the Washington Grand Hyatt. When I say directly, I mean directly because the Metro central station is located below the hotel! Instead of a $30 cab ride, we each spent only $2 for a Metro ticket. When we reached our stop (in about 20 minutes), all we had to do was ... read more

LONDON May, 2009 There is a reason that London continues to be one of the top tourist destinations in the world : With all of the history, culture, entertainment, shopping, royalty, and just all-around ambiance, it is difficult to top London. This was our third trip to this spectacular city; however, the first two were brief and a long time ago, so we were looking forward to having an entire week to explore. For our friends Ed and Charlotte, it was their first visit, which made it even more fun. Our overnight flight from Houston to London arrived at 9:30 a.m., and we promptly bought underground train tickets (London's Tube) for the 55-minute ride to our hotel on Kensington High Street, the Hilton Olympia. Our rooms were not yet ready, so we left our bags with ... read more

EASTERN CARIBBEAN CRUISE January 10 - 17, 2009 Our first foray of 2009 was a delightful cruise on the Celebrity Summit to five islands in the eastern Caribbean: St. Martin/St. Maarten, Dominica, Grenada, Bonaire, and Aruba. A four-hour, first-class Continental flight took us to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the departure port for the cruise. Early the next morning, we arrived in St. Martin/St. Maarten, nicknamed “The Friendly Isle.” This dual-nation island is part of the Lesser Antilles islands and is only 37 square miles in size (roughly the size of Washington, DC). The divided island is the world’s smallest territory shared by two sovereign states. In the early 1600’s both the Dutch and the French established small settlements on the island and decided to share the island and fight together to prevent a Spanish invasion. According ... read more
