My one full sightseeing day, another of which I spent walking around the city and its sights. A very beautiful city to walk though, actually. The first thing I noticed when I stepped outside the hostel was, something beautiful. The city reminded me a lot of Seattle, largely due to one of the facts that it was another port town by the ocean. It was also very pleasant to walk through, and there were plenty of historical sights, much like Seattle. I walked along the river. The city colours stood out vibrantly; it was different, yet still America. This would be the second last city I visit here in the States, so I made sure to take in as much as I could. I spent time walking around the ports, but mostly through the city and ... read more

While in Boston, we took the subway into the city and took part in the "Freedom Trail". This self-guided 2.5 mile walk took us past 16 historical sites, by following a red line or red brick path, and covered 2.5 centuries of America's past. Was one of the more interesting days we have spent. Even the 45 minute subway ride was great - Gerry finally didn't have to drive! ... read more

These days when the world takes its steps towards the future and you find your ties to the familiar more dispersed than they were back in the high school days, you may find yourself longing to keep the bond going and stretching your arms thin to stay in reach. And since a little autumn season never hurt nobody (and is never felt in Miami), Boston it was. Time for some fresh Fall shades and good vibes with a much missed friend... After a nice night of dinner and wine we were off the next morning on a train towards Salem to catch some October air. Salem is known for its Halloween Madness during the month of October. It brings in the spirit of magic, ghost tales, and witch craft so the locals as well as tourists ... read more

It’s amazing how little of USA history I and most non North Americans know. Sure through TV and movies we know that something happened when 4 scores and 7 years earlier someone said that. Which you’d say with a bit of confidence was by Ab Lincoln. George Washington was the first president. But how did it get to that point? The answer, Boston and the surrounding area of New England. I had a contact here across the river in Cambridge. When I arrived with no GPS I was looking for a place to park for free until my friend had finished studying. Somehow I found myself in Charlestown. Weaving my way through the streets of lovely wooden houses, I managed to park near a hill with a large obelisk style tower surrounded by lush green grass. ... read more

So it’s been 3 1/2 weeks since we left the fair (and by fair I mean of course, cold) shores of Blighty and boarded a flight from Newcastle to Heathrow, then on to Boston, Massachusetts. That all seems like a long time ago (funny how mundane things like getting up, driving to work and taking the piss out of pupils makes the time fly). So what’s been happening back home? Answers on an email please… Us? Well, we rocked into Boston late – made our way to Dr Paul and his lovely wife Lyndsay’s home where we caught up on the last couple of years over a few beers. The next morning dawned and we headed out to explore Boston. It’s an old (by American standards) city, with some cool buildings, a lot of “heritage” and ... read more

We’ve been here in Boston a week now. Time to put a few thoughts together. This is a great city. Like all places, it’s even better when you have great weather. With blue skies every day and record temperatures (it hit 87F in the city) over the Columbus Day holiday weekend, we’ve been so lucky. It may all end in tears in a day or two, as the rain which flooded parts of Florida last weekend moves up the east coast. Part of the attraction of New England in the fall is the ‘riot of colour’ as the trees change. The word on the street (and in the Boston Globe) is that this is not the best year for foliage viewing. Yet. The fall and the colour gradually moves south during October but ... read more

The weather could not have been better and the course was beautiful. We ran around what is known as the Emerald Necklace, a series of lakes around Boston through residential neighborhoods with enormous brick homes. Spectators were scattered around the course cheering us on and the last mile of the course cut right through the Boston Zoo, past the giraffes and zebras. I don't usually miss much when I'm running because I carry a camera and am always looking for something awesome to shoot, but my friend Mike didn't even see the giraffes and zebras and ran right past them! Of course, his finish time is very important to him and he was focused. Mike finished in 1:44 and our friend Lisa finished in 2:30. Wendy and I ran the entire race together and came in ... read more

We’re here in Charlestown, in Tom and Nancy’s wonderful 1820 house overlooking the John Harvard Mall. Charlestown is less than 30 minutes' walk to the centre of Boston, across the Charles River, which also separates the city centre from Cambridge, home of Harvard and MIT. Can’t quite believe how lucky we are to be exchanging homes with Tom and Nancy. Nor can we believe the things we have in common. Both our lives have been in education, both our houses are stacked with books, we both live in places with stacks of connections with our respective national heritage and we both live with the honour of sporting a resident’s parking permit on our car. Before long, we’ll both have a memory of forgetting where it was parked the night before. If our ... read more

So we didn't update the blog last night as it would have been a very short and very uneventful entry as it was a very uneventful day to be honest! So to make the entry a bit more interesting to read, we thought that we would combine today's events with yesterdays instead! Yesterday, we managed to drag ourselves out of bed at 7am, threw on some clothes and had some breakfast, before coming back to the room and going back to sleep! We had a fairly late night the night before so we were still quite tired, but we thought that we should at least get up for breakfast as it was included in what we paid for our room. We later woke up at around 11:30am, again, a little later than we had hoped, but ... read more
