This morning Raju dropped me off back at Alewife tube station and I got the train into Cambridge to have a sneaky peek around Harvard. My visit seemed to coincide with the arrival of all the undergraduates, complete with duvets and fussing parents. More than once I got asked if I was lost and needed help finding my dorm; this was actually quite useful as I was lost, although I hated admitting I wasn't actually a student there. I eventually found the Peabody Museum, Harvard's answer to the Pitt Rivers (although not as good, in my opinion). I also looked around the Natural History Museum which was great fun. There was an excellent exhibition on evolution, which I was glad to see since apparently 70% of Americans don't believe in it... I also saw the very ... read more

We started our trip with a train ride to Boston. From there we drove to Woods Hole for the night awaiting our ferry to Martha's Vineyard the following morning.... read more

After driving 1,850 miles we ended our west coast tour in Los Angeles, CA. There we meet up with my brothers Rob, Tim, and Mike and my cousin Brian who was accompanied by his fiance Erica. We ate at some fancy Mexican restaurant in the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. It was an early night as Elyse and I had an early morning flight to Boston. Thank God we arrived a few hours before our flight because LAX is just about one of the worst airports we’ve flown in or out of. If you thought the DMV was inefficient the TSA takes it to a new level. We nearly missed our flight as the security lines channeled down to one line so that everyone could go through the body scanners. I miss the old metal ... read more

It is August 14 which means that I must have just spent two weeks in Boston. While I'm sitting in the airport waiting to board a flight to Las Vegas "disoriented" is perhaps the best way to describe my current state. Three weeks ago I was in Madrid finishing my MBA. Two weeks ago I was in Porto saying good-bye to everyone and everything that I'd come to love over the past year. The past 14 days have a been a roller-coaster of interviews, abusing the MBTA, fast food, life-altering choices, and most importantly reunions with friends from college, Indiana, Peace Corps, and past colleagues. As I try to describe it all perhaps"overwhelming" is a better adjective. Boston in the summer is a beautiful place. Despite the hour long trips on the B-train and waiting for ... read more

Week 2 at Boston College (BC) was much different from Week 1 with Andrew. Here by myself, I savored the opportunity to read, worship, meditate, study, reflect, and listen to God. As I appreciated this time and space to collect my thoughts and put them to prayer - I realized that the older I get, the more intraverted I am becoming. Let me back up a step and share why I chose Boston College. Well, besides the fact that I love the city of Boston and pull for the Red Sox, I learned that the School of Theology and Ministry (STM) at BC is one of the few places that has a summer sabbatical program. Clergy and lay professionals from around the world enroll in the BC STM Summer Institute and stay for up to 6 ... read more

For those of you kind enough to follow and read my Sabbatical blog let me first say, "Thank you!" It is much more enjoyable to write when I imagine there is an actual audience reading what I post. After you accept my thanks, then please also accept my apology. I have kept a written journal for most of the summer, but as you already know I have fallen terribly behind with keeing my writing and pictures up to date on the blog. For this I am terribly sorry. I originally fell behind when I went on active duty for the Air Force and did not have the time nor a good internet connection to keep the blog fresh with our cruise pictures. I am now at Boston College for a two week course on Christology. Since ... read more

This trip was one we will both remember and appreciate for many years to come! The purpose of this trip was so I could study at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College (BC). I must admit, however, that studying was not my top priority for the first 5 days I was at BC. Nope. I purposely fought against my instinct to constantly work and read. Instead, I decided to focus on Andrew and give him my time and attention. Work will be light and I will have to catch up on reading after Andrew flies home. Boy was I glad I invested this time with my son, because we had one of the very best weeks of our lives! It went something like this... On Sunday we checked into our BC dorm room, ... read more

Boston; the Highlights On my way to my final destination in Sydney, I had the pleasure of spending two and a half weeks in the North East of the USA; New England and the Tri-State Area. Undoubtedly it was a true travelling experience, sharing my evenings from one couch to the next, something made possible by the large number of Irish J1’ers in the area. Despite seeing so many different areas and meeting so many people, the majority of my time was spent in 41 Cunard Street, Roxbury Crossing, Boston MA. Here I stayed with my old school friends Jake Golden, Steven McCauley and Cian O’Carroll. After a week of luxury having the futon sofa to myself, my college friend Gabriel McGuiness was a welcome addition to the house. It was great to see how well ... read more

You would think, that after a year of planning my backpacking trip that I would have everything completed and done. But of course not! As I type this, I have repacked more times than Paris Hilton has boyfriends, I've ran to the nearest store to by that last minute trial size bottle of shampoo, paid my bills on time (nothing is more suckier then returning home from vacation with a LAST WARNING envelope hanging on your doorstep), and completed my odds and ends. So why do like I am missing something? I think it has to do with the uncertainty of backpacking. I've traveled around the world with tour groups and a security blanket of everything being taken care of. Drop me in the middle of the Sahara with 30 people and I'm cool as a ... read more
