For 3 and a half weeks it has been my job to be a stay at home dad. Janine continues to work very hard as the registrar for Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries and often works long hours. Being home for 3 straight weeks with two teenagers has given me a true appreciation for homemakers and dedicated parents everywhere. On top of the every day chores and responsibilities, I have also used this time to clean, organize, and make repairs around the house. It has felt so good to put some TLC into our home and family. Here are some of the home activities I have taken pleasure in... + Cooking in the kitchen and on the grill - We continue to enjoy the fish I caught in Washington, freshly made salsa, and blueberry scones for breakfast were a ... read more

Most of you know that my Mom and Dad have a summer home close to us here in Arden. Normally, I have to schedule time with them on my day off or hunt for a free night to share a family dinner. My sabbatical schedule has kept me on the go to be sure, but August has been a good month to catch up with my parents. I have especially enjoyed hanging out with my Dad. We played a great round of golf at high vista and check in about every other day. We have also worked together on different projects at each other's homes. And sometime we just go for a ride in the truck. Mom has helped me with some window treatments and taken Katherine out shopping for new clothes. Good girl time from ... read more

For my own record I wanted to keep a list of where I have enjoyed worshipping this summer. It has been a great blessing to concentrate on my own worship life and simply enjoy the experience of being fed and strengthen through Word and Sacrament. I have been impressed and encouraged by what God's people are doing in different communities all around the world. I have heard the gospel proclaimed through great preaching. I have felt uplifted by amazing music, rich liturgy, and strong hymnody. God's spirit within me has been moved by heartfelt prayers lifted from a variety of voices within a congregation. I have been warmly welcomed and invited to share the Eucharist with my sisters and brothers in Christ from a variety of denominations. Again and again I have admired how Christ is ... read more

Camping out has always been one of my favorite pastimes. As a Florida boy I always looked forward to a summer trip to NC and quality time in the mountains. I think camping out, hiking, rafting, fishing, and exploring various waterfalls and mountain peaks is great fun! Since we moved to Asheville in 2004 I always thought my family would be out every weekend hiking in the Pisgah National Forest or sitting around a campfire. This, of course, is not a realistic expectation. Life is full and our schedule of school, soccer, and church activities keep us in town. As a result, our family has not camped out as much as we would like. In between soccer tryouts and the beginning of school we ceased the opportunity to load up the car and enjoy some time ... read more

Week 2 at Boston College (BC) was much different from Week 1 with Andrew. Here by myself, I savored the opportunity to read, worship, meditate, study, reflect, and listen to God. As I appreciated this time and space to collect my thoughts and put them to prayer - I realized that the older I get, the more intraverted I am becoming. Let me back up a step and share why I chose Boston College. Well, besides the fact that I love the city of Boston and pull for the Red Sox, I learned that the School of Theology and Ministry (STM) at BC is one of the few places that has a summer sabbatical program. Clergy and lay professionals from around the world enroll in the BC STM Summer Institute and stay for up to 6 ... read more

This trip was one we will both remember and appreciate for many years to come! The purpose of this trip was so I could study at the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College (BC). I must admit, however, that studying was not my top priority for the first 5 days I was at BC. Nope. I purposely fought against my instinct to constantly work and read. Instead, I decided to focus on Andrew and give him my time and attention. Work will be light and I will have to catch up on reading after Andrew flies home. Boy was I glad I invested this time with my son, because we had one of the very best weeks of our lives! It went something like this... On Sunday we checked into our BC dorm room, ... read more

For those of you kind enough to follow and read my Sabbatical blog let me first say, "Thank you!" It is much more enjoyable to write when I imagine there is an actual audience reading what I post. After you accept my thanks, then please also accept my apology. I have kept a written journal for most of the summer, but as you already know I have fallen terribly behind with keeing my writing and pictures up to date on the blog. For this I am terribly sorry. I originally fell behind when I went on active duty for the Air Force and did not have the time nor a good internet connection to keep the blog fresh with our cruise pictures. I am now at Boston College for a two week course on Christology. Since ... read more

We flew to Boston on Saturday and Erin Cram (an old Lutheridge friend and daughter of Eileen) was waiting to pick us up. She was kind enough to drive me over to the Boston College bookstore to pick up a couple of books that I needed for my 2 week course on Christology. We enjoyed some exotic tacos and ice cream for lunch and then made our way back to her home near Cambridge for the night. We had enough time to go over to Harvard and show Andrew the Museum of Natural History. After that we enjoyed dinner at "Christopher's" - appropriately named I thought. Unfortunately, Erin's husband Doug was out of town, but we would get to see him on Friday instead. On Sunday morning Erin made us a delicious waffle breakfast and then ... read more

The canopy tour with Katherine was definitely the hightlight of the 3rd week of July. The rest of my time at home was mostly spent on cooking, cleaning, gardening, relaxing, and paling around with the kids. During this week Andrew decided that we should have a Harry Potter movie marathon. The goal was to watch a different Harry Potter movie every night for 7 straight nights and then go see the final movie (Deathly Hallows - Part 2) in the big theater on Friday night. It was a courageous and admirable goal, but life got in the way, Janine had to work long days at Lutheridge, and the kids were distracted by opportunities to play outside with their friends. It ended up that Andrew and I managed to squeeze in 7 movies in 8 days, but ... read more
