In the last year and a half, I have heard stories from hades offered by those who have driven in Boston without being in tow of a trailer. My common sense prevailed, and I programmed the GPS for my journey from Plymouth to Salem via the longer route and I-95 around Boston instead of the shorter I-93 route through downtown Boston. I arrived in Salem without any problems, but the trip from the freeway to the municipal campground at Winters Island Park was a real challenge. As in most older cities, the streets (and lanes if there are such things) are very narrow, the telephone poles are immediately adjacent to the curb, the various roadway hazards (potholes, manholes, etc.) catapult the truck like a cannon ball and almost every corner where I had to turn came ... read more

“If We Don’t Go To War, They’ll Keep Treating Us As Though We’re Still Colonies”

Today was Independence Day. Happy Birthday United States! Those who know their history know the Declaration of Independence was actually approved on July 2nd, but it was not released to the public until two days later, hence everyone celebrating the holiday on the 4th. Normally, I know exactly what I’d be doing today. I’d gather food, lots of water, a book or two, and head to the Esplanade to claim a spot for the concert and fireworks. Seemingly every person in the Boston area has the same idea, leading to big crowds and a long wait. The earliest arrivals appear around dawn! Naturally, it all becomes a big party with many people attending with family and friends and hanging out all day. My group of MIT graduates has done this i... read more

In the year 1812, the citizens of Boston gathered to debate whether to support the growing movement to declare war on Britain. Today, the Park Service held a reenactment. It was performed in the actual room where many of the originals took place, the Great Hall of Faneuil Hall. Now fully restored, it’s a classic federal room with colonnaded walls. A big painting hangs behind the stage, showing a famous 1830 debate between US Senators Daniel Webster and Robert Hayne over nullification. Many political debates still take place here. The actual debate was done by historic actors in colonial outfits. The audience played the part of undecided citizens who must ultimately vote on a resolution to support the war effort. I suspect some were surprised ... read more

Ask any kid in the United States about Old North Church, and they will likely respond “one if by land, two if by sea”. Thanks to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the church is forever defined by the lanterns hung in the steeple on April 18th, 1775 to signal the British were moving to attack the colonial supply stores at Concord. The church still exists with an active congregation. During the festival they give tours of areas not normally open to the public. Today I finally made it. 'Our guide started with the story behind the lanterns. In the late 1700s Old North Church was a surprising place for revolutionary fervor. A large percentage of the congregation were involved in maritime ... read more

This year, Harborfest focused on the USS Constitution. The War of 1812 happened two centuries ago, and this particular ship played an important role in it. Today, I visited the star of the show. To some historians, the War of 1812 was just as important as the American Revolution to the history of the United States. In this reading of events, after United States independence Great Britain viewed the new country as wayward colonies that had only broken away due to the interference of the French. Given a fight without outside influence, the British should easily regain control. The War of 1812 became that fight, and the world’s largest empire learned their former colonists were a force to be reckoned with. Europe took the United States much more seriously afterw... read more

This year became a very strange one for me travel wise. After my nearly year long voyage of discovery, I was pretty burned out. I still had no desire to go anywhere, and can’t afford it in any case. This was a new situation for me, and one I hope never becomes too comfortable. Thankfully, I didn’t need to go very far to find something worthwhile this year. One of the truisms of travel is that people will fly thousands of miles to discover something they would completely ignore at home; This year I finally made up for that a bit. Every year the week leading up to July 4th, Boston hosts a huge festival called Harborfest celebrating American Independence and the city’s rather outsized role in it. Despite living here for decades, I’ve never been. ... read more

I had driven into Boston from Cape Cod by rental car that I had dropped off back at the airport. Before doing so however, I had some time left to find my chosen hostel (with the help of GPS) where I had trouble finding a parking spot in order for me to drop my backpack so I wouldn't have to haul it all the way from the airport. After a few circles around the block, I managed to find an undergound parking, where the guy was so nice to put my car next to his booth for 5 minutes without paying.. Thank you! From the airport I took the blue T line and changed at Gov't center for the red line to take me to Arlington T station. From there it was just 10 minutes to ... read more
