Geo: 42.3585, -71.0596An early start from Belfast with a first stop on top of the hill (by car!) in Camden Hills State Park for another stunning view, then to Freeport, home of LL Bean (for the uninitiated very like John Lewis - but with extras). And finally back down Interstate 95 to Boston, watching the petrol gauge because the car has to be returned empty and I'm not giving Avis more than I have to. Annie had invited Bill and Mary (who we have known for years, Bill is also one of the organisers at Putnam Camp in the Adirondacks that we visited earlier in the trip. So that was a good evening and next day we focussed on local errands and chores (laundry and the like) and a walk round Lake Waban which sits, mostly, ... read more

Good morning Boston! We decided it would be much easier to take the T to get to our first tour at Sam Adams. Well, that meant an earlier morning than most because of the walk to the station then switching trains. Go to my friends blog to see some pictures of the T. Samuel Adams, Boston Beer Company, Boston, Massachusetts http://www.samueladams.com/ This was one of the tours I was excited to take. And what better time to start than first thing at 10 A.M. We waited for the tour in a room with pictures and factoids about the brewery and brewer, Jim Koch. While the tour is free, they did ask for at least $2 which goes towards a Boston area charity. Surprisingly, the place was pretty small. It turns out that most of their production ... read more

The Flight Logan is sooooo much better to park at and fly from than JFK. Easy Peasy. However, the Logan TSA Agents need some lessons from Miss Manners! Surly is the word. All of them. So many confused and non-English speaking people going through security, and they were unbelievably rude and impatient. Just really unnecessary, and an embarrassment as a citizen of the U.S. The flight was good, we met a fellow named Colin, from London (or thereabouts) and he and Tom spent a good portion of the flight discussing travel, politics, the Church, politics, history and, politics. Well, at least that is what it sounded like to me. Arrived at Heathrow on time and with not much room to spare, hurried our way through the terminal to our next flight. Found out that we needed ... read more

The place I have been staying at is called a co-housing unit. The people who live there are acommunity's who help each other and maintain the premises as much as they can without outside help. They each donate four hours a week to do something around the place, I.e. gardening, cleaning etc. There is a committee who organise things and there are communal areas where you can do yoga or work out at the gym they have. They also have guest roomswhere's guests can stay for a small fee. They are very supportive of each other and do not have any rules about who can live there. It had a really good feel, the people were friendly and everyone looked out for each other. The guy I stayed with was a community artist and worked with ... read more

Have arrived in Boston, after a three house journey by bus from Brattleboro. I eventually got the hang of the T (subway) and found my way to the new accommodation. Another lady called Eileen from Co. Cork I. Eire is also staying here. We ventured out in the evening and found an excellent Thai restaurant. The following day I took a trip out to Spectacle island, so called because there are two small islands joined in the middle which resemble a pair of specs. The space between the islands has been built up over a period of time. I took a walk around the island which takes about an hour,it was a nice way to see some of the islands and the harbour. I imagine it would be really nice to picnic there in the summer. ... read more

Geo: 42.3585, -71.0596This is the beginning of a seven week trip up and down the eastern seaboard of North America from Nova Scotia to the Florida Keys.Arriving at Boston airport in the middle of the afternoon we picked up our Kia (ugh) hirecar from Avis and while Peter learnt to interpret the satnav he had brought with him we made our way by a variety of confusing tunnels and motorways to the familiar street with Annie and Tim's house which we know well from previous visits and where we were greeted by Annie and Monty the dog.It was great to have a long catchup chat over tea but by the time Tim came home from work and supper was served our body time was beyond midnight and we began to droop! ... read more

We're back from another baseball in Boston adventure, and we had a great time... we made a point of seeking out places we've never before and it was nice to see some other parts of the city. Left Thursday morning in beautiful sunny weather. Stopped for coffee, gas, lunch (Whole Foods... mmmm smoothie), etc in Portland and that was pretty much all the stopping we did. Got to our hotel in Boston (same one as always - Holiday Inn Somerville) around 4:00. Rested a bit and played on our devices, and then wandered off to find some food. We walked from our hotel down to Union Square and found a thai place (Sweet Ginger). Food was fine. I've never been to Thailand, so I have no idea if it was even remotely authentic, but it tasted ... read more

Finally I could really sleep in. I didn’t have to be up early to catch a plane, train or bus, and I didn’t even have to check out. As a result, I left the hotel at about 12 to embark upon the so-called “Freedom Trail”. The trail is a series of historical buildings and places in Boston, mostly related to the American Revolution. They have mapped out a path between these locations and it was this that I planned to follow. First thing was to get something to eat. As it is a weekend and I seem to be staying in the financial district, there wasn’t much open near the hotel. So I walked towards the beginning of the trail and eventually found a small food court. I picked up a chicken sandwich and went over ... read more

Sitting against the wall near the airport gate as I charge both my computer and iPhone, I realize that I never took the time to really sit and think. Am I ready? Having the 2 hours of just waiting in anticipation for someone to state that our flight to Munich, Germany is starting to board, it still hasn't hit me that I'm leaving. I'm leaving the US for a second time, to learn more about three developing countries and more. I have at least 10lbs in protein and granola bars, so does that mean that I'm ready? I just finished my second semester abroad application to go to Ghana for 4 months, so does that mean that I'm ready? I filled out my absentee ballot online form so that I can vote for the 2012 elections ... read more

Boston’s North End is known for its Italian feasts. Every single weekend in summer, there is a festival honoring a saint. They are community gatherings and celebration of heritage. Above all, they are religious events, designed to bring blessings for the next year. Nearly all of them were brought from Italy by immigrants in the early 1900s. Even as the neighborhood has gentrified in recent decades, they have remained a staple of the event calendar. If I had to choose only one feast to experience, it would be the Feast of Madonna del Soccorso, much better known as the Fisherman’s Feast . It started among Sicilian fishermen in the 1500s , and was brought to the North End in 1910, making it the oldest feast of them all. It culminates with a religious blessing so unusual ... read more
