Sensory Perception My very first sight of Italy was when we were flying; following the coastline along the West down to Rome. The light was diffuse, it was early afternoon and the dark water was sparkling in the sunlight. The rolling hills of that region are dotted with farms; the sections of which are irregular and misshapen compared to the very neat squares of farm acreage we see in the U.S. The patches of trees and plants were a crazy quilt draped over the landscape. Dotted here and there were small communities; towns and villages, glowing among the verdant greens. Rome is a busy city, bustling at all hours, traffic rumbling and horns honking. The motor scooters buzz by the cars and buses, they weave in and out with centimeters to spare, horns beep constantly. The ... read more

St. Peter's Basilica We get up EARLY to be at the Basilica when they open at 7am, to avoid long lines and crowds. We are not alone, there are probably already a hundred and fifty others there, but security moves quickly and it is not long before we are on the steps of the Basilica. Our timing is very good, we get to see the sun rise from the steps, across St. Peter's Square. Breathtaking. Size and perspective are a difficult thing to grasp everywhere in Rome, and it is the same here. According to what I've read, that is intentional for this incredible place, it is massive, seemingly goes on for miles, but the feeling inside is of intimacy. Voices murmur, but no one needs to be hushed as in the Sistine Chapel, the building ... read more

The Musei Vaticano & Sistine Chapel Our tour of the Vatican Museums begins with our first significant wait in line. We take a taxi to the Vatican Museum in the rain, rather than walking, arriving about 30 minutes before the tour. Rome is even more beautiful in the rain, everything sparkles and shines with added glamourous mystery. The museum guards are attempting to corral a few hundred visitors through the lanes in some type of order, with little success. As we stand to the side, a young woman approaches us, hesitates, staring at Tom, turns away, then back again. Does she find him compellingly attractive, does she think he's a famous Italian movie star? Turns out, she thinks he is her archeology professor from Boston University. Ah, no. :) When we finally get into the museum, ... read more

More of Rome As often happens when traveling, it's always good to have a Plan B. Friday morning we awaken to severe thunderstorms and lightning; and some very sore feet! Our intention was to head over to St. Peter's Basilica early, but we scrap that in favor of sleeping in and recovering a bit from the miles walked on Thursday and the jet lag that has settled in. Around noon, we head out (much refreshed) to see more of Rome. We start on the Metro again, as we are experts at this now, and leave the city center to see the St. Paul Basilica just the other side of the ancient Roman wall. Aptly called, St. Paul's Outside the Wall. St. Paul's is a very beautiful basilica, ornate gothic decoration and a beautifully intricate mosaic over ... read more

Ancient Rome, Part II We leave the Colosseum, and wander over to an area of outdoor cafes for a bite to eat. Tom has his favorite, Carbonara, I order the Arrabiata and we get Pomodoro Bruschetta and Caprese salad to start. Not up to the standards of our first night dinner, but still really good, and besides, we're in ROME! We head down the street for a gelato ..... these people know how to live, let me tell you. A bit more wandering on our own, then over to the Vittorio Emmanual II monument, to meet up with Brian. Brian is taking us on our Night Tour of Rome, along with a group of three here from Boston. We begin with the building where we meet, a huge building locally referred to as "The Wedding Cake". ... read more

The Ancient City I know, it's been a few days, sorry! We've been busy and (as we experienced last year) WiFi here may be free, but it is sketchy. Thursday morning we set out to meet our guide for a tour of Rome's Ancient City. We meet at Trajan's Column, a monument to the Emporer Trajan, which depicts his efforts at increasing the size of the Roman Empire. Trajan's Column is located at Piazza Venezia, a bit of a hike from the hotel, so we take a cab. The driving here is always an adventure, and this was no exception. But I think we are starting to get acclimated. :) We arrive early, and take in a few sights, snapping off a few photos, and watching the people in the street. Rome is great people watching, ... read more

First Night After several hours of napping, we gather ourselves to head out for a special dinner at Ristorante Aroma, atop the Palazzo Manfredi, a rooftop terrace location overlooking the Colosseum. What a wonderful evening! The view is breathtaking, we can hardly take our eyes off of the incredible site of the Colosseum all lit up. It is one of those 'pinch me' moments. We begin with a cocktail and a shared plate of Rigatoni alla Amatriciana. Fresh made rigatoni, cooked perfectly to al dente, with a complex tomato based sauce, crisp pancetta and shaved pecorino. The sommelier, Allesio, pairs it with a wonderful, soft pinot noir. Just perfect. A few minutes later, the staff laughingly brings us each another plate of rigatoni, they say that Tom raved about it so much the chef sent out ... read more

The Flight Logan is sooooo much better to park at and fly from than JFK. Easy Peasy. However, the Logan TSA Agents need some lessons from Miss Manners! Surly is the word. All of them. So many confused and non-English speaking people going through security, and they were unbelievably rude and impatient. Just really unnecessary, and an embarrassment as a citizen of the U.S. The flight was good, we met a fellow named Colin, from London (or thereabouts) and he and Tom spent a good portion of the flight discussing travel, politics, the Church, politics, history and, politics. Well, at least that is what it sounded like to me. Arrived at Heathrow on time and with not much room to spare, hurried our way through the terminal to our next flight. Found out that we needed ... read more

Tomorrow? Tomorrow's the big day! I have 90% of the packing complete, printed all of the travel documents/itineraries/reservation confirmations....not much left to do but anticipate! Anticipation for me includes second guessing everything I've already packed, do I need more/less shoes?, have I planned for weather contingencies, and where's my passport!?! (It's okay, I found it) Tom often asks before a trip, am I excited? Well, who wouldn't be? I think it's because I have so many other things that I am responsible for that it will be hard for me to relax until I have crossed all my T's and dotted all my I's. Kids/pets/house/work/bills.....they all need some of my attention before I can feel free to leave. We have reservations our first night in Rome to eat at the Ristorante Aroma, atop the Palazzo Manfredi ... read more
