well i made it to hawaii without complication... just waiting for my ship to come in. i recently spoke to ian, the skipper, which was a refreshing conversation as i have not heard from him in awhile and paranoia was slowly seeping into consciousness. but all is well and i still have a ride to australia, but ian stated the pacific winds have been slow and unsteady, delaying his arrival from california... this is a bummer for me as i have to extend my stay here in waikiki... nothing to do here but relax, surf (mostly paddle actually), hike, and booze it up here in the rainbow state. i'll just have to make the best of it... (sigh) the loss of convenience has settled indifferently today as i laundered my clothes in the bath tub of ... read more

We had been going and going the first 2 full days, so we decided to take it easy on our last full day in the Big Island. The hotel had its own tiny, private beach - our first destination in the morning. After a liberal application of sunscreen (...could the sun in Hawaii be that much worse than El Paso?), we found an area which had some shade and set up camp. Fortunately, there were not a lot of people on the beach, so into the water it was! It was such pleasant ocean that I have had to reform my opinion of "the beach experience." Unfortunately, my previous ocean outings seemed always to be at beach locations where either the water was too cold or too dangerous, and the beach itself was crowded and bug-infested...but ... read more

Reflecting on this wonderful trip so far, it certainly seems that the 4 days here on the Big Island of Hawaii are flying by! Though Henry has been to Hawaii on many occasions, he has not been to this island. It's my very first trip to any Hawaiian island, so we have wanted to see and do it all! We finally arrived at our hotel, the Fairmont Orchid on the west Kohala coast just north of Kona, at 8:40 on Saturday night. Our day of travel was long, starting with a flight from El Paso to Dallas, then to Maui, then to Hilo, ending with a 2 hour+ drive along the coast to the hotel. I have to admit that while Henry was driving an unknown highway, I was thoroughly enjoying the view from the passenger ... read more

On Friday, after a delay out of las Vegas and another delay out of san Francisco we finally made it to Hawaii... Although it was so late we didn't do anything other than check in hehe Have a full ocean view overlooking waikiki beach and it is awesome!!! So sat we had a look through brochures over breakfast and decided to do a luau and a full island circle tour, so booked those, the luau for that night and the island tour for Sunday. With that mission accomplished I then went and investigated surf schools... Went and got changed into swimmers and signed myself up! It was amazing!!! I had so much fun! There was only 3 of us in the group which is was good, not too many people for me to embaress myself in ... read more

So from Fiji onto our last stop of Hawaii, touching down into Oahu we set off to our hotel in Honolulu at a scourching 90 degree farenheit! Our hotel was lovely compared with the huts we've been staying in- true luxury!! We planned on spending a relaxing time in Hawaii before our flight home, but started to get itchy feet not doing anything but lazing on crowded Waikiiki beach!! So booked in to do a few touristy things. Made a trip over to Hanauma Bay to do some snorkelling but unfortunately even though a beautiful place, the crowds set in here too. The snorkelling wasnt great as the tide was out and so we kept cutting ourselves on the coral, got to see lots of lovely fish but not the best we'd seen especially with the ... read more

I'm just testing this site out, I'm not even close to departure. I'm starting to feel very type A; I have nearly a month and a half before I fly out of my home country over the pond, and I've pretty much planned out every last detail. I've even printed out train schedules and timetables from points A through D. It's funny, every time I take that personality test, I show up type B, but only by a point or two. But how accurate are those tests anyway? The majority of my trip's planning has been through helpx.net (and craigslist...) and after viewing some ads for wanted companions, I realize how unlike the traditional free-spirit, backpack-through-Europe, go-wherever-the-wind-takes-me kind of person normally embarks on this sort of journey. Most of the generous helpx homes that agreed to ... read more

Kahala Beach awaits My very favorite beach on Oahu is the Kahala beach. It is near Waikiki where most tourists stay. Home to Sea Quest, it has a wonderful pond for the dolphins, and a quiet, luxury ambience on the sand. Take bus 14 from Waikiki and you'll be there in minutes. Great place Here's also a good place to store photos: http://public.fotki.com/mariesatz/ ... read more
