Since my brother, sister, and brother-in-law live in Waimanalo, I feel a familial obligation to make the trek at least once a year. Their house in the country is set on 3/4 acres and surrounded by lush plants on two sides and a neighbor's stable on the third. The true charm of their home is the Lanai. A covered, enclosed porch from which one can sit and enjoy the sounds of donkeys, roosters, and birds. Across the street is a beautiful garden that is hidden from the rest of the world and provides more plant life to the already jungle-like scenery. Because they live in the country, the beach is five minutes away by car. This may seem undesireable to some, but it is actually a perfect arrangement for me. The best beach near their home ... read more

Aloha from Hawaii! Hawaii was a bit of a surprise really. Wasn't expecting too much so I was pleasantly surprised. We stayed in Waikiki on the island of Oahu which is the most touristy part of Hawaii but also the easiest to get around. Waikiki beach was beautiful with the crystal clear water and palm trees. We lazed by the beach after our near 24 hour sojourn from Sydney via Fiji which was bliss after the cold of canberra. May have blissed out a little too much because I got a little burnt! For Samara it was a 48 hour birthday due to the time difference and of course we celebrated with a cocktail! Have allready experienced the difference in cultures etc. with trouble finding a good coffee and anything without sugar in it. Everything here ... read more

Dear Family and Friends, Ah....Hawaii....other than the significant temperature difference, we feel a bit as if we have come full circle. We started in Iceland, driving through lava fields and we end in Hawaii, driving through lava fields! When we first started to plan this trip 4 years ago, Ken knew he wanted to include Iceland for its rugged beauty and Kate knew she wanted to end with Hawaii, as a pretty good place for a relaxing transition. After another long travel day from Melbourne, Australia, to Kailua Kona, Hawaii (about 18 hours, door-to-door), we were thrilled to be warm, see the sun, speak English, and still have western-style toilets! Using US currency has taken some adjustment - we still find ourselves examining the money closely before using it. We are in a timeshare for the ... read more

Aloha from the Big Island. I finally feel to have arrived somewhere. Imagine eating papayas, passion fruits and star fruits straight from the tree. To drink coconut juice, swim with sea turtles and tropical fish a la Nemo in the warm ocean, be blessed with abundant sun shine every day and you know where I have landed. The Hawaiian Islands consist of 7 islands of which the most southern and least densly populated is the Big Island. It's basically a big volcanoe which is still active by the way (the island is growing daily through the outpour of lava into the ocean. After spending the first week in Kailua Kona on the west coast exploring the island I am now in Hawi a small town on the north tip of the island. I found a super ... read more

Left Vancouver about an hour late. Arrived in Honolulu greeted by warm humid air. Hotel is a bit old and the room pretty small, but since we don’t spend too much time in the room, who cares? Spent our first day at the USS Arizona memorial. Very, very impressive. Also toured the submarine Bowfin. Difficult to understand how the submariners could stand it in such close quarters. If you get to Honolulu, you shouldn’t miss the memorial. The second day was spent on Waikiki beach getting some sun (burn), walking around and doing a bit of shopping. Tomorrow, very early in the morning, we head to Sydney and the start of the big journey. I’m likely going to put a number of folks on email notification when I put in a new entry. If you don’t ... read more
