6 hours! 6 bloody hours on a crammed plane across the country to LA. Probably the worst flight I have ever been on. The sights and views of the American mountains and plains though were something quite beautiful. Finally we landed in LAX! Woohoo! One Problem... We had a little less than an hour to make it from Domestic to the International Terminal... Now if you've been to LAX you know it’s a pretty big airport, and we basically had to run straight through the middle of this massive airport to get directly to our terminal in time for our flight. Now picture this... A group of 6 college kids, two teenagers and a few elderly/middle aged travellers running at night through parking garages, crossing streets and at one point even jumping a fence with all ... read more

Average start to the day before hitting Route 66 again, bound for Barstow. We decided to follow the pre-1931 route which took us via Goffs. More small towns with the all too familiar sight of abandoned buildings and gas stations, long forgotten by the fast paced world of the I-40. We passed Cadiz, Amboy (site of a volcanic crater), Ludlow, Newberry Springs and Dagget before taking a side road that led to Calico Ghost Town. We spent a couple of hours wandering the streets of the small western town, founded back in 1881 and famed for its silver ore mines. We had lunch at the Old Miners Cafe, rode the Calico/Odessa Railroad and walked through Maggie's Mine, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Then back to Route 66 heading for Barstow. We checked into the Route ... read more

This must be the 6th time in 3 years I've had the (dis)pleasure of being here yet this airport never seems to change. Angry customs officials, a million security checks and its cold. Though one good thing is the breakfast burrito I had. Scrambled eggs, green onions, black beans...we need these in Australia. So I don't actually have a voice at the moment which is fun...even more so when explaining to the immigration person that you're traveling to Mexico to immerse yourself in Spanish language and culture for him to reply why don't you just stay in LA we have lots of Spanish speaking people here. Yeah Mexico or LA...tough decision. Well this was just a quick update to get my blogging working again. Nearly time to fly for Mexico City for New Years Eve. Will ... read more

Well the final day is here, so very sad to be leaving this wonderful country and amazing state, all I can say is watch this space, if I don't manage to achieve living here before I die, my life will not have been complete... Dropped off and said goodbye to our lovely car, dragged our very heavy luggage onto the courtesy bus and off to LAX. Arrived quite early so entertained ourselves with sushi (me) McDonalds (him) and Haagen Daaz (both!!) and sat watching the aircraft arriving at the gates. Uneventful flight to Madrid if a little noisier than the outbound as we were flying Iberia, Spains national carrier and the Spanish generally find it hard to stay quiet for any period of time!! Arrived in Madrid and took the very turbulent flight back home to ... read more

Vicki and I are back where this adventure started a little under 3 weeks ago, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). After a day that started in New York we caught Delta's 1pm service to LAX. As is the way in the USA the plane departed right on time, and was packed to the rafters, and arrived about 10 minutes early. We met Thomas a young Frenchmen who is working in a gallery in New York and was flying to LA on business and meeting with one of his artists. A very interesting man, we did have a little trouble understanding his broad French accent but apart from that a real pleasure to sit next to for the best part of 6 hours. We have just finished dinner at Gladstones, an American Seafood restaurant chain that is ... read more

Well we had nothing planned for our last day but there was one thing in the back of my mind we might do and that is shopping at the outlets in Citadel. After breaky I make sure they are open, and then arranged a hire car at the Budget place right across the road from our Hotel . It took about 30 minutes to get there and the freeways were flowing OK in our direction anyway. We went to most of the shops here but Luke was looking for an NBA jersey and they had none at all. What !!! I actually thought this place was of less quality than what we found in Denver and certainly not up to the Las Vegas standards we have seen before. We finally ask someone where we can get ... read more

We left Anaheim in lovely sunshine and drove the scenic route round Palos Verdes where pirates of the Carribean was shot offshore. We stopped at the Wayfarers Chapel where a wedding was in progress in possibly the most picturesque chapel in the world made from glass and timber in a Redwood grove. Continuing on we passed the beaches of South bay until we came to picturesque El Segundo beach with its power station behind and $ 8 charge for parking! We checked into our smart business hotel with heated pool then set off after a Carls Jr.burger tea for the best view of LA from Griffith Park Observatory. Sadly it was so popular we could not park within a mile of the place so abandoned the idea and drove along Hollywood boulevard instead. It's a bit ... read more

We awoke to rain – heavy rain and all thoughts of walking the city for the day quickly disappeared. We were also thankful that we had done the bridge walk yesterday, which meant that we would not have to brave the elements high up above San Francisco Bay. We were reminded of Mark Twain’s observation that the coldest winter he had experienced was a San Francisco summer. Today was to be spilt up into two parts. First we would do an included highlights tour of the city by coach and then there was an option of a ferry ride to Sausalito on the opposite side of the Bay. Narelle and I had steered clear of the optional extras to this point as we like to take the time to do our own thing but we opted ... read more

Fiji-Episode 2 Monday 19th March Up late today after a bit more Skype talk with family and friends. Emma has sorted car insurance out for us all in our absence which we are very grateful for having saved us a stack load of cash. Really hot again today so after topping up at the included breakfast buffet we chilled by the pool for the remainder of the day. I am feeling a whole lot better now and looking forward to resuming the beer intake from tomorrow when i finish the course of dustbin lid tablets! Tuesday 20th March Time to move on today back to Nadi Town and hand the car back. We have booked a room at the Trans Continental Hotel for the night before transferring to Sonaisali Resort tomorrow. We didn’t rush driving back ... read more
