We have an early start to the last day of our holiday and make the decision to head back to Downtown Disney, for a bit of last minute shopping along with the opportunity to feel that Disney magic again before hopping on a plane and flying home. A late lunch at Taco Bell (Oliver's last holiday request!) and a fair few hours spent packing suitcases (definitely a fine art involved in getting those suckers zippered up!) Shuttle from the hotel to LAX and a couple of hours to fill in before the long haul flight, Los Angeles to Melbourne, 15 hours of flying time (it just sounds so wrong doesn't it??!!) A much more pleasant flight for Oliver and I as we manage to sleep literally half of the time away (Bradley fills the hours with ... read more

Average start to the day before hitting Route 66 again, bound for Barstow. We decided to follow the pre-1931 route which took us via Goffs. More small towns with the all too familiar sight of abandoned buildings and gas stations, long forgotten by the fast paced world of the I-40. We passed Cadiz, Amboy (site of a volcanic crater), Ludlow, Newberry Springs and Dagget before taking a side road that led to Calico Ghost Town. We spent a couple of hours wandering the streets of the small western town, founded back in 1881 and famed for its silver ore mines. We had lunch at the Old Miners Cafe, rode the Calico/Odessa Railroad and walked through Maggie's Mine, and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Then back to Route 66 heading for Barstow. We checked into the Route ... read more

After breakfast on Sunday morning we left Phoenix destined for Flagstaff, where our official Route 66 road trip would begin. It was a very scenic two and a half hour drive. Once we reached Flagstaff we had lunch and also stopped in at the Visitors Information Centre before heading for the open road. Our first stop was Bellemont where the now abandoned Pine Breeze Inn sits, which was used in the Easy Rider movie. We weaved our way between the I-40 and the old mother road and continued on to Williams. It was such a buzz to see the iconic streets and buildings of the now historic Route in this town, still so full of colour and life. From Williams we continued on to Ash Fork, just west of which begins the longest unbroken stretch of ... read more

Our day began with our first IHOP breakfast (International House of Pancakes), their stuffed french toast being one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten, before leaving Tucson headed for Phoenix. A visit to Pottery Barn on the way (yes this store was as fabulous as I had hoped!) and a wander around another gigantic multi level shopping mall before checking into our hotel. We had been looking forward to arriving in Phoenix as it meant the opportunity to catch up with family. We had a delicious dinner at Nerissa, Dustin and Kate's place and chatted the evening away. We had a busy day planned with the Nolte's showing us some of the sites of this beautiful US state. Our first stop was at Mother Natures's Farm Pumpkin Patch, how fantastic! We fed and ... read more

We had a very different drive from Holbrook to Tucson, following the I-77 through mountainous valleys, the roads curving around bends, zig zagging, all the time with sheer drops to the side. Some phenomenal country out here in Arizona, just beautiful. A day spent on the road, just under 5 hours in total, arriving at our Best Western hotel around 4pm. A delicious dinner at the Royal Sun Restaurant (onsite at the hotel which was just perfect as it saved Bradley having to drive anymore today). On the road fairly early this morning heading for the infamous Wild West town of Tombstone. Our first stop was Boothill Graveyard where we spent time wandering the rows of grave markers, lots of them unknowns, but others meeting a much more harrowing end. A very interesting tourist stop. We ... read more

On the road relatively early heading for Flagstaff, where we divert to our next stopover in Holbrook. The drive was a really nice one, through an area of Ponderosa Pines and with our highest elevation reaching 8067 feet! Once in Flagstaff we caught our first glimpse of the signs marking the historic Route 66, very exciting indeed. Lunch at Taco Bell (check another item off Oliver's "to do" list!), a quick spot of shopping (how will I ever survive without Michaels on our return to Oz??!!) and back on the road. We arrived in Holbrook late afternoon and checked into Wigwam #2 (we are staying at the famous Wigwam Motel for two nights). Complete with old classic cars sitting in front of each of the wigwams, it's such a novelty place to stay and we love ... read more

Our journey from Las Vegas to the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, included a tourist stop at Hoover Dam and a late lunch in Kingman. Although one of our longer road trips (driving time of around 4 and a half hours), the changing landscape enthralled us and the time passed quickly. It was late afternoon by the time we checked into the hotel (very nice indeed complete with its rustic cabin feel lobby, large stone fireplace and wood carvings) and we had a relaxing evening of pizza and TV. Our day at the Grand Canyon can only be described as truly awesome. We had been looking forward to our visit to this natural wonder and the experience itself certainly did not disappoint. It really is difficult to find the words (yes, even for me!) to describe the ... read more

A busy Thursday despite the fact that we did not actually set foot outside of the Luxor! Our day began with the Titanic - The Artifact Exhibition (very fascinating and so well set up including the reproduction of the grand staircase from the ill fated ship) and then we moved onto Bodies - The Exhibition (an amazingly different way to look at ourselves from the inside!) We bought tickets for the evening show Criss Angel - BeLIEve, a magician and illusionist (who certainly made you question what you were seeing before you! Very entertaining indeed!) Friday was our last full day in Vegas so we spent it exploring the rest of the Strip. We began at The Bellagio (breath taking conservatory with a current theme of Fall with the most amazing sized pumpkins I have ever ... read more

We had a few stops in Downtown Disney (Build-a-Bear and some last minute shopping at the World of Disney store) before hitting the road bound for Las Vegas on Tuesday morning. We had an estimated 4 hour 20 minute journey to our destination, which in reality ended up being closer to 5 hours with traffic. So it was early evening by the time we hit the outskirts of Vegas, which in a way ended up being kind of nice as the lights on the strip were just starting to glow. We checked into the hotel, we are staying at the Luxor (this place is quite simply amazing, hard to find words to describe the size and detail..... just in the hotel lobby alone!) We flopped in front of the TV and had a late dinner, exhausted ... read more

Our last day at Disneyland Park begins and it is quite an emotional experience knowing that it's the last time we take those steps through the gates into the magical kingdom. We ride the Disneyland Railroad to Tomorrowland bound for Autopia (Oliver's park favourite!) and have a go at the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters for the last time. We meet up with the Ferguson's as they are queuing in Fantasyland and arrange to meet up for lunch. We head for Mr Toad's Wild Ride and the boys squeeze in another session at the Shootin' Exposition in Frontierland before sitting down for lunch at River Belle Terrace. We all decide that Pirates of the Caribbean will be our next stop and it's so much fun to share with friends (and we all manage to stay dry!) We ... read more
